I finally have all the components to start my next project. To start out with my current configuration uses a jbl 2404 for highs crossed at 4500hz, a jbl 2485j covering from 450-4500 mounted to a custom elliptical horn. My current bass bin is a pair of klipsch k33 tuned to 45hz. I would like to keep the top and mids the same but replace the bottom end with a pair of jbl 2242h. I have molded a cabinet in winisd that seems to work good for the 2242's. The box would be 16ft^3 with 4 6 inch ports tuned to 45hz. Winisd shows it being almost perfectly flat from 45-500hz. My main question is I need help with a passive crossover design and also has anyone tried using a pair of 2242's up to 500hz or compared them to a pair of jbl 2226's. Thanks in advanced for any help

Are you sure you can cross the 2404 that low? After all, it uses the same diaphragm as the 2405 that is usually crossed at 8KHz. Crossing a 4.5KHz is usually done with the 2402 bullet tweeter.

As for the bass, perhaps you can contemplate going with an active crossover. A passive crossover in the signal to the bass driver will change the driver's Qts because of the resistances in the network. Don't worry about crossing the 2242. Simply cross it lower, like 300Hz with a 12db slope and you'll still be 12db under at 600Hz. More than enough to "meet"your 2485...

I am myself experimenting with a JBL 2245 cut at 300Hz, to meet aJBL 2360/2445 at 450Hz.

the 2404h that I use specs show it good down to 3khz. Jbl had the recommended crossover at 3khz or higher with a 12db slope. The reason for the 400 or 450 crossover is because my mid horn only loads down to around 400hz. If at all possible I would like to go passive on the crossover due to my equipment being in another room.

If you go active, put a bigger horn under the 2404, the 2404 will sound a BIT tiny at those frequenties, dont go lower then 5.5k in a home enviroment.
Thats the lowest I ever crossed it, to a 2344, normaly 7K and up is about where it shines, lower its just a tweeter playing to low frequenties in my opinion :)

I decided to take the jbl 2242's I have and use them in bass bins. Instead I picked up 4 2226j's and will be replacing my current woofers. I have a crossover for my current configuration that uses a first order on the woofer at 400hz and second order on the tweeter/mid at 6000hz. I have included a schematic and would like to know if someone could help me modify the low frequency inductor to work with the dual 2226j setup or if someone has a better crossover in mind that would work. For the time being I cannot go active due to the placement of my speakers and my electronics being in another room. So to recap my configuration will be a Pair of 2226j's tuned to 45hz for the bottom, a jbl 2485j mid driver mounted to an elliptical horn that will load down to 350hz and a jbl 2404h covering the topend. Any help would be greatly appreciated.58740
