Jbl 4560 with Altec 416 8a

Hallo !
A friend gave me a pair of old crappy 4560..............
How will they work with altec 416...........i will use subs .
to start with i will use 3110 a Xo with 2441 and a TraxTrix 400 Hz horn..........
Is it possible to tune the cab to go a bit lower.?? it would be nice to skip the subs.........

The ideal volume for the 416 8B is around 8.5 feet. You can go down to 30 Hz with 2 4" vent tubes 6.5" long.

Thats assuming the t/s parameters are close to each other. If not then never mind, LOL.


What is the volume of those cabinets?

Nice. They seem to be in great shape. You will definitely need subs. Those cabinets are midbass/medium PA reinforcement.

Yes i know that they are mid bas .......but with a little EQ they sound really nice.........don`t know if the Altec 416 bas makes a difference.....

Hi Lasse. Your question was about skpping the sub. The answer is that there's no way around it. The horn loading is very strong down to 180Hz. Then it is a steep fall. And the cabinet doesn't have much internal volume. You sure can eq bass down to 60Hz, but you'll still be needing a sub :bouncy:

Hey Lasse,

If you adjust total portarea to 150cm2 you can expect this bassextension and midrange on-axis response. On floor, against rear wall. Unfortunately it is not possible to run the sims at the same time.

-3dB at ca 50Hz. If you have the possibility to add volume you can make it go lower. My guess is you could go 10Hz lower when adding 100dm3 and correct porting.

I suspect lowest possible xover frequency for your horns is 6-800Hz. A bigger horn crossed at 4-500Hz might work even better.

I use a smaller Tractrix hornreflex with 414-8A for midbass 100-400Hz. Also have a friend using 816 with 416 for the same range. On top of that 200Hz L´Cleach(100cm dia).

I did exactly that years ago with 416-8b's, where you have cabinet feet, I had a riser which enlarged the internal volume of the 4560 cabinet. The upper baffle board housed a tweeter and the port size was diminished to retune the cabinet.

Main cabinet, and riser lightly filled with polyfill stuffing.

It was better sounding than it had a right too be.
