This has probably been covered before but could not find it in my search. I picked up a beautiful pair of early 4430's from a fellow LH member. They have the 2421A driver. Included in the deal were a pair of 2426H drivers as spares. I swapped one of the 2421's with the later driver to do a comparason. A friend of mine with better ears came over for a listen. He liked the sound of the 2421 better that the 2426. His opinion was the older driver was more detailed, accurate and had a warmer sound. He felt the 2426 could get slightly harsh at times. I too prefer the 2421 but I was not as impressed as my friend. My question is, did JBL change anything in the crossover network, cabinet, horn etc. when they went to the later drivers? The drivers themselves are quite different in appearance, naturally, but the specs look very, very close.

Thanks

The 2421A was the preferred driver due to its aluminum diaphragm. JBL changed nothing in the network when they went to the 2425H/2426H. Everything your friend mentioned was known at the time. Putting aluminum diaphragms in the 2425/2426 takes care of the "problem".

Aluminum diaphragms didn't hold up well under extended abuse. For home use where people tend to be a bit more sane they are preferred.

Maybe I'm confusing you with someone else. If so, what brought you back?

Yes, this is my second round with the 4430's. A new house with a "Man Room" makes a big difference in gear! Now I can have what I want, within reason that is.

I have had success with Radian diaphragms in the past. I may spring for a pair of those and try them in the 2426H drivers. Any suggestions for other brands?

I'd wait to see if the beryllium diaphragms become available.

My opinion is that the 4430 and 4435 are worth the expense.

Hey Widget, I will be enjoying them just always interested in trying something new.

4313B, any inside info on the possibility of beryllium diaphragms becoming available?

Anybody have experience using aquaplassed dia's in the 4435?? I have a pair under renovation and might go that route but if I remember the "resonant" ckt to boost the HF had a bit of room in the 4430 but not in the 4435..is that one db or so be an issue??
