View Full Version : RIP Zilch

Mr. Widget

With great sadness I must report that the Lansing Heritage Forum has lost another of our members. Zilch, our "Quick and Dirty" thread master has left the building. As many of you know Zilch was quite passionate about our hobby in general and Lansing Heritage in particular. He loved to tweak and worked long into the night on project after project... at times he seemed unstoppable, but in recent years his health began slowing him down and he eventually lost his battle with lung cancer.

Most of his early work is featured in several threads here on this site. As he became more focused on sharing his knowledge with a wider group he took his work to both Audiokarma and the Tech Talk forum at Parts Express.

Here is a link to a farewell posting by his good friend Chris at AK.

Awww - that's just so sad. About 6 months after I showed up here, when I started dinking with the 4320 monitors, he sent me a kit of a T-amp, a pair of selenium drivers and horns, JBL/UREI M552 crossover, various extras and a comp network to play with. I didn't ask him to, and there was no charge, he didn't know me from anything except the forum, but he knew it would open my eyes about this gear, so he opened his heart and trusted me enough to send a package cross country for a month of trials!
He just loved to share the fun of learning about all of this ... I saw him share his enthusiasm with folks all over the place here, and at AKharma ...

What a darned shame he's gone!

Thank you, Evan!
Peace be with you.

I'm just now finishing the DIY 4430's that I based on the Q&D version of the 3134 crossover. They will be done in a few days, I'll be sure to run them up to stupid once they are complete. I've already had the 2235's up to "painful" to break in the suspension, but have yet to hit "stupid loud".

So long Evan, and thanks for all the data... We'll try to keep the wank level down to a dull roar.;)

Damn! Although knowing it was inevitable, it is nevertheless a shock. I had corresponded a bit with Evan, and had vowed many times to visit him when I was in the Bay area, but never could make it work. And now, the chance is gone...yet, I still feel as if we'd been friends from all the posts where he bared his interests and passions. Yes, he took on most of us, but to prod us for more data, less wank! And mostly in a gentle way.

It's not a surprise, but it is a shock nonetheless. :(

Thanks to Widget's general invitation here to attend the audio show in Emeryville last year, I got to see Zilch, as it turns out for the last time. I'm so glad we got to hug before we parted. :)

He was joyful and optimistic as was his wont, and we reminisced about the midnight rendezvous in the hotel parking garage in Sunnyvale, his rebuild of my BX63A (which I'm using right now), the Zilch Miracle Cable and more. Grumpy caught a great picture at the show, which I'll repost here.

He has gone back to the place he came from, and he enriches it with his return.

I was just reading a past (pm) from Zilch that we had over coarse of time and thinking he’s no longer there on the other end, no more.

No more sharing pictures of my cat that he liked.

He even sent me cat scoop though the post a few Christmas back strange? Well it was actually a kitchen utility item for frying. Don’t think I’d use it for frying knowing where it’s been now. :D

I just can’t believe he’s not here anymore and for the past few days I’ve been mourning his passing.: Deep down I’m a little sentimental.

There was so much more to Evan than I (or we) even presumed to know. Many questions I wanted to ask him beyond his passion for music and chasing down the elusive best and final sound system. This was just one facet to a jewel of human being. What little I knew of him- unselfish, fair minded, involved in community, self deprecating to the extreme ("Zilch" for crying out loud). Pass it forward and leave behind a better place.

Thank you, Zilch.

What a generous spirit and model of audio passion for us to lose.

When I first got my new-to-me L200 pair he answered my mulitple noob questions with patience, depth, and his typical directness: "Fake, but fun." was added to my audio lexicon. I initially thought he was somewhat humorless, but the more I read his threads, the more I realized that was my mistake.

We were indeed fortunate to have him contribute and challenge us.

Hi. I have been thinking about this. We, the "old gard" know this. The new members don't know, and they see a thread posted by someone who is not with us anymore, and post a question. They obviously don't get a reply.

What about making a forum, where all posts from members tat is no more here, or a "pop up" that says something that the starter of this thread is no longer with us?

I don't know, just a thought. What do you think?

We have lost a number of old friends, there are possibly others too whose passing I may have missed. Here is the list that comes to mind: Zilch, Scotty, Johnaec, Steveh, and Tom Loizeaux. Tom passed away a few years ago, but the rest were more recent. I have just changed their "User Title" to RIP and year. I was thinking a long the same lines as well with the user title.

"Gone But Not Forgotten" Year or Date. What makes the boards so special IMO is that we all have so many different views or tastes on speakers, amps, audio in general. But we all act as one when it concerns one of our members.Who are Loved by so many Folks. It's an Honor to be a part of that ! I didn't know Evan as well as some other Folks here, but he still had time to help me with XO questions for my new Custom build.I imagine that Evan replied to just as many PM's as he did in threads to help people, as he did with me on the Altec board.Just a very Generous Guy who is dearly missed.

Not that I have any plans to leave the planet for many years, but in my will I have instructed my family to write a note to the forum the day it happens. Anybody else done or have been thinking about this?

I got a new desk (donated through a nonprofit sharing group in LA) for my main office, so had to totally reconfigure the room. In the process, the 4430s, B380, and all the rest had to be moved.

Plugging it all back together, I remember Zilch asking me to send him the AC adapter for the BX63A and the BX63A itself, which was acting a bit wonky. Somehow he found the problem in the adapter itself, fixed it and sent it back to me, no charge. Of course, I Paypalled him some $$ anyway, 'cuz I knew he'd had to buy new parts out of pocket, but that's just how he was.

I'm stunned and shocked. Just to let You know Zilch, I really enjoyed all of your work and Audioheritage.org will not be the same without You. R.I.P

Well like others, I'm saddened at the loss of Zilch. He helped me design a subwoofer, and willingly helped in calculations on all aspects. He made lots of contributions, and deserved the AudioKarma award for Member of the Year. I'll miss his singular wit; and his posts. Unfortunately work has been demanding, and I've spent less time online tis year than in the past; and I missed this thread earlier in the year.

Like others, while I dont expect to have any health issues, it brings to mind what I'll have my wife to do when my time comes. The idea of the designation and year of death are a great idea.

RIP Zilch, the forum will miss you; and thanks for your selfless contributions that those of us around LHF for years will remember.

I need to connect more on this site, been busy doing too much else.

Zilch just wasn't a guy posting about speakers, he was a reference and store of knowledge that seemed boundless.

I can't believe he's gone.

I am so new to this hobby and just learned today from reading one of the threads here that Zilch is no longer with us. I have no doubt he'll be missed by many. Thanks for sharing the knowledge with us.

RIP.
