I always end up here searching for information on JBL equipment, so I though I might as well join. This is my first post.

I have a pair of e145-8 mounted in cabinets made from JBL 4530 plans. I got the cabinets cheap with the drivers.

Since 4530 have issues with intereference, I am planning to build straight front loaded horns instead. Since this is my first attempt at designing and building a horn I would appreciate any help I can get.

I have seen a lot of people complaining on the internet about cone breakup on 15" drivers. Is this an issue with the e145? At what frequencies will this happen?

The e145 has a light cone. How much compression will it be able to handle?

I will be using this horn in a hifi setup in my summer house (where I can play really loud), and at parties in the old granary.

I am using old Labgruppen PA amplifiers (LAB1000 for this driver), and electronic Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB crossovers. I will certainly push my drivers to their limits.

An E-145 would be the suggested replacement in a Hartsfield if you could not get a 150-4 up and running. In short it is capable of driving a corner loaded horn. I would not worry about it.

Something like a 4560?

Like 4560, but longer for lower cutoff. Horn part of these start dropping at 200 Hz, http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/low_frequency_enclosures2.pdf. Check out this thread: http://forum.speakerplans.com/jbl-4560-plans_topic12373.html, pictures of burning 4560s! From what I understand from other threads there is a phase problem with JBL designs because they are not front loaded, the 4560 and 4550 horns have ports. I want to build something with a closed rear chamber.

I will build a pair of Hartsfields when I retire :-).

They are large, which is why they get folded most of the time.
I have built C40 horns(smaller version of the 4530), I have build a set "K" corner horns and I own a set of 4560s, which I use for PA with a sub woofer.
Yes, I have seen that picture before.:shocking::(

May be this thread gives some inspiration.

Maybe an Edgar 80 Hz horn? http://ftp.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?7402-Driver-choice-for-use-in-Edgar-mid-bass-horn!

Will it work? Work well?

Looks like it should but I would contact Bruce. With the extra thick frame and larger x-max you may need a spacer or 2 depending on clearance issues with the throat. Maybe not but it can't hurt to ask.

The site is not working. The new site is to be fully functional in january 2007! Does anyone know if Dr Edgar is still running his business?

Hi,

RE; front loading your e145-8 .

- Consider following "volvotreters" lead in these matters .
- Just substitute your speaker for the EVM15L that he's currently using in his front loaded lo-mid horn .

- Click the pic ( to go to his web-site ) .

I did a simulation in hornresp yesterday. Flat 110 dB/1W response from 60 Hz to 300 Hz, and then a 12 dB/octave drop above. This seems doable, but the upper end is a bit too low since I was planning to cross at 300. How close to upper knee can I cross the horn?

The difference between tractrix and conical in Hornresp was minimal. Will they sound equally good (or bad)? Building a conical horn will be much simpler though.
