Great singer, Peter. She has a terrific vibrato.

Maria Pia De Vito is my favorite singer that I am aware of. Being a Jazz head myself, she is a Jazz singer of course, of the European experimental sort. Unlike most singers, Ms Fischer included, she prefers other vocal modulations to standard vibrato.

Singing with herself through technology:

A gentle song:

There is more of her on uTube.

Another great voice, always overlooked because she was a pop singer. Laura Branigan had a vibrato I have never heard equaled. It was very rapid and she could produce it over her entire vocal and dynamic range. That would have been a four octave range. I heard her state in an interview that she idolized Edith Piaf, but I think Laura developed a more tasteful, more flexible vibrato than Piaf. Kind of like the Beach Boys wanting to sound like The Four Lads but overshooting the mark to the good side. Laura tragically died in 2004 of a brain aneurysm.

Canned music track but live vocal. If you like big, powerful voices with world class vibrato, this should knock your socks off:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_krKjEPbMt4

Never mind Michael Jackson or even James Brown. The most exciting vocal performance I ever saw on TV was Laura, in a long black dress, singing several songs on a late night show (maybe the Tonight Show?). A bonus, she was SO physical, leaning down to reach a low mike and still dancing all the time. She actually worked up a sweat.

I don't know if you'd call it a vibrato or a trill, but Magic Sam has such a unique voice, the first time I heard it I was hooked. An interesting blues guitarist, too!

How I found Tarja Turunen ;)
Recently we drove home on the Autobahn and we were astonished about the traffic which was supprisingly heavy for that time of the day. And we saw a lot of cars with nationalities from outside Germany which are normally seldom to see here. Then we realized a lot of cars with
W * O * A

on their back window. And then we got it, Wacken Open Air was coming up!

It is has been the biggest Heavy Metal open air festival on earth and it takes place less than 50 km off from where we live. As my son used to go there I googled for Wacken looking for what might be going on. I stumbled about this and that and it ended up with

NIGHTFISH

which is a symphonic metal band from Finland. Their last concert with Tarja Turunen

“End of an Era”

they had given in Helsinki, Finland 2005 and is available on DVD.

You can watch it on YouTube:

Tarja is a finnish soprano and she studied singing at Sibelius Academy and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. - Oh what a voice! Oh what a concert!

Nightfish played at Wacken in 2013 with their latest singer Floor Jansen, Netherlands, who is a great performer as well. This concert “Showtime, Storytime” has been released on Bluray. You can watch it on YouTube:

A great baritone from America, here singing two famous pieces so you can compare his rendition to the performances of others, and a less well known piece in the bass range. He was such a good actor he was known as "The singing actor."

I usually favor contraltos, but this is one coloratura I have long admired. Give me some credit, I first heard her on Rhapsody and was won over before I knew what she looked like. :) I have heard her sing in most of the usual languages but I believe she is French. The second song would have made a fan of me if I had never heard anything else from her.

Peter:

Tarja used to sing with Nightwish until a 'personality conflict' with the other band members forced her to pursue other avenues for artistic career. I agree with you -- Tarja has an absolutely GORGEOUS voice. She always delivers a good show. I encourage everybody to see one of her live performances; you won't soon forget it!

I am NOT a C&W fan ..what-so-ever , BUT Patsy Cline had most likely the
greatest voice ever of that genre, and maybe more ..... IMHO

The Mass No. 2 in E minor, by the austrian composer Anton Bruckner (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Bruckner) is a setting of the mass (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_%28music%29) ordinary (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordinary_of_the_Mass) for eight-part mixed choir (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choir) and wind band (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodwind_instrument) (2 oboes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oboe), 2 clarinets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarinet), 2 bassoons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bassoon), 4 horns (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_horn), 2 trumpets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trumpet) and 3 trombones (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trombone)) was first created in 1866. About one hundred years later later our music teacher rehearsed this piece of music with our school choir acompanied by organ. As far as I remember the soprano sang like angels.
The setting is divided into six parts.

Kyrie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyrie) – Ruhig Sostenuto, E minor
Gloria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_in_excelsis_Deo) – Allegro, C major (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_major)
Credo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credo) – Allegro, C major
Sanctus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctus) – Andante, G major (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G_major)
Benedictus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctus) – Moderato, C major
Agnus Dei (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnus_Dei) – Andante, E minor veering to E major (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_major)
With the part „Agnus Dei“ this piece of art fades away like a prayer for peace.

You can get an impression of the singing when listening to the Universitätschor München. Don't miss to look into the faces.

Korea is not all K-Pop. If the language puts you off, the second song on the video is in English. She scats a lot, perhaps why she is sometimes known as the Ella Fitzgerald of Korea. A live performance. The artist is found by searching "Malo" and ignoring the latino group references. All her recordings are on Napster (formerly Rhapsody).

clark,
thank you for the presentation of Cheong Malo who i have not known before.
The language is no problem, although I have not learned any Korean. A well educated person /singer can qlways xpress any mood or intention in his own languge.
The recitation of Cheong Malo shows, that she does not need an overwhelming orchestra to impress the listener.
Clark, I'm as usual impressed by your finds. :)

You are quite welcome , Peter. I am pleased you enjoy her art. You are one of the very few I have known who are unfazed by performance in languages not understood. I barely even note it anymore. Here in the far less cosmopolitan USA it bothers almost everyone I have known. I listen to a lot of music in Irish (Gaelic), Scots Gallic, Breton, Portuguese and Spanish. I can't get any of my friends to listen to it. "I can't understand what they are saying."

I just found a live recording of Pé in Éirinn Í by Muireann. She is slightly softer of voice because she is very pregnant. It is on the bonus DVD from The Transatlantic Sessions 5 (2011). It begins at about 3:46. The audio sync is ragged and way off, but in addition to the original accompaniment Jerry Douglas plays lap steel (for once, instead of Dobro) and Aly Bain plays fiddle. Those two are the founders and backbone of the Transatlantic Sessions.

I am certain this is on the bonus tracks because the format of the series is a lot of musicians performing together in higher energy presentations, but while this didn't fit, it is way too brilliant to leave out altogether. You may find this audio absolutely haunting.

WE all have different ideas of "Great voices" .... I don't think the genre matters , tho many of those voices stick to a single one.

I sometimes just let Pandora roll all day for BG ...

lately have been hearing a lot of Marilyn McCoo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marilyn_McCoo

she sounds "just right" for my ears ... wish she'd branched out a bit.
