Hello everyone!
I just picked up a pair of Stephens (my first) They are perfect in every way
A pair: a 206 AXA and an "AX"
Only difference one has a HF level control and was built at a later date
These are the really beautiful red and blue 15" co-axials and weigh about 30 or 40 lbs or so I'd guess
Build quality is out of this world Spiders are dead flat and one of these was most likely built in 1954 from what I have managed to find and read!
Woke them up gently as I knew nothing of their history Sounded sort of thin and poorly at first Played them at very low volume for about a day with Sorry State and then hooked them up to my little 6BQ5 tube amp
WOW! These things sound remarkable and just keep getting better as I play them more :bouncy:
Hate to say it but I think they best my 001s in most every way so far
Anyway, one of them has it's surrounded treated with something from the factory and the older one does not It's the damn all paper conundrum like with some 130s The cone doesn't terminate as abruptly and sharply into the roll as my JBLs and appears to be a more ideal form as well as a heavier stock
Does anyone else here own a pair of these? They sound so good in a thoroughly "modern" way that I might even consider these as daily drivers, but I do not wish to harm them
Should I teat the surrounds? Leave as is? I was all set to treat the older one yesterday and had everything all set up but then stopped
The cone is just so pristine and clean! I decided to mull it over some more The other half of my brain was saying; "they are paper, if you use them long enough they will split"
Or will they?
The boxes they came in are very very nice but need bracing or something as the bass is too much for them (by about day 4 you could feel them vibrating like crazy; they are 3/4" veneered plywood) Definitely inspired by JBL's Lustig stuff They are "ported" by a vertical slot cut on each side of the box and the opening is covered with what looks to be nothing more than masonite pegboard for hanging tools They were definitely built in a factory or by a professional operation but there is nothing present to indicate who's
A mint copy (all 3 discs) of Michael Jackson's HIStory vibrated off the top of one and fell to the floor ruining one disc :(
And no wise cracks about listening to M.J. ;)
Any help advice tips or links to more information regarding these would be much appreciated! :bouncy:
Not a whole lot out there that I've been able to find
I read several short pieces in which these were mentioned briefly along with the venerable "604"
I have never heard a "604" but if these are any indication I couldn't imagine And with only about 10-12 watts!
Thanks folks
Thomas
