While I have seen orange JBLs used in Fenders, somehow I don't remember D120Fs ever having orange dust covers. A new one on me if it's true.

Yes, as I noted, I've seen lots of orange Fender baskets, but never an orange dome. ;)

Anything's possible, but I have some experience with speakers and other aluminum trimmed audio gear that resided in night clubs for a few years. I found a coating of cigarette smoke on aluminum surfaces that looked just like the photo. It accumulated on dust caps and on the aluminum dress plate of a Shure Vocalmaster speaker so that it looked exactly like this. A very delicate test using a Q-tip and some ammonia should reveal the truth. If it's a factory coating, ammonia will not damage it. FYI it took a whole half-gallon bottle of Windex to clean the gear from the club. Can only imagine what coated my lungs....

This seems to come up about every 8mos - just infrequently enough to forget. If I remember, it usually ends up that everyone has seen them, JBL did make them with Orange/copper dustcaps for Fender, but no one at JBL was there when they did it...

I worked in nightclubs that used aluminum dustcap drivers in the 80,s and early 90,s. WHEN smoking was still allowed. Never saw one with nicotine stains like that!

I have seen the white interiors of cars owned by heavy smokers turn yellow/brown, though! But, if this was nicotine stain, wouldn't the cork gasket also be seriously discolored? they look original. My guess is someone used a spray tint coat to color them, maybe they thought it looked cool.

ROTFLMAO.
