View Full Version : TAD 1601 T&S parameters needed

I have a pair of these TAD 1601 drivers and would appreciate any help with locating the Thiele and Small parameters. These are the 1601(nothing extra here) as opposed to the 1601(a), 1601(b) or 1601(c).

I have woofer tester and the results don't wash with the 1601a's. I'd like to know if these have been stressed and might possibly need remagnitezed.

You will see Professional Speakers, click on that, you can find T/S specs for the 1601A.

As far as I know, the TL indicated a complete speaker system, whereas the woofer is the 1601A. The 1601 series uses alnico magnets, and if your woofers were abused, blown and reconed several times, it is possible they need to be regaussed. And IF the magnets are weak, it would throw the measurements off.

For further info, I would contact TAD in California, to find out what you have and where to get it in looked at and serviced.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, that link does not provide any info on the 1601.

I misunderstood the TL designation and have pulled it from the title to avoid further confusion.

My measurements weren't a radical departure from their parameters on the 1601a. The SPL was down 2db (around 95 as opposed to 97)and the QMS was substantially lower though the cone looks the same. VAS and other Q figures were within an acceptable margin.

Calling Pioneer seems to be the route I should go.

On a less scientific note: they sound good. :D

I believe the changes you mention suggest loss of power in the magnet.

I would not stress over it too much.

The sensitivity is more about how you measure and most people I know of consider the 1601 to be more 94-95 db then 97 as quoted .

If a alnico driver measured has lost some of the magnetic field, would not the Qes/Qts values increase due to less motor control???

I have discussed this matter with Brad and I can't understand how his Qms values are so low which are determined pretty much by how heavy the cone is(at least in my feeble mind).

If I'm correct, the magnet strength should not affect the Qms values as much as the Qes/Qts values.

Anyone who can expand on these mysteries and explain them to me would be appreciated.:blink:

Easiest thing is to just pack them of to GPA and be done with it.

Qms - mechanical Q, has more to do with resistive losses in the suspension
(spider and surround), IIRC. If there were no losses, exciting the cone would
get it moving at the resonant frequency and it would just keep moving in/out
forever (infinite Q).

The "used" alnico Tad woofers are known to have a loss in sensitivity from Pro use although Tad deny this according to the Pros.

Hence the Ferrite high power models.

One reason I would not buy a used Tad woofer unless it was used in a domestic environment.
