over lunch today, I watched about 30 minutes of the Woodstock 40th Anniversary directors cut DVD - disc 2 with Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick :love: ), and Sebastian performances. and I realized that the cover on this LP is from the Woodstock performance. An A&M artists promotional album for Altec speakers;

I picked that up from the dealer in '72/73 ..later on I acquired a pair of Altec Capri's ...and gave the album away to the buyer of the speakers , since they are featured inside.

My local thrift store color codes their new items...noticed a collection of records that all had the same color....waited 5 weeks for that color to cycle around to "sale color of the week" ...but Monday 9AM I ran in at opening along with all the other opening ninnies, and grabbed 28 classic rock records for $7 ...most were individually priced $3-6 each.

It's A Beautiful Day - Self Titled
(1969, Columbia)

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records/IBD003.jpg

doing a shoot-out between my Columbia 2-eyes copy and a very clean 70s pressing that I picked up yesterday at an audio gathering near Portland. Great record, both copies play great, the newer one is silent, the older one has some light surface noise. The first pressing is typical thick heavy vinyl.

I didn't know the band had a connection to Seattle - interesting story on wikipedia about the Seattle rain being inspiration for White Bird:

The group's original manager, Matthew Katz, had previously worked with Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape. The members of It's a Beautiful Day were unaware that the other two groups were already trying to end their business relationships with Katz. During 1967 and early 1968 Katz prevented It's a Beautiful Day from performing in San Francisco, telling them they were not ready. He booked their first public appearances at a club he controlled in Seattle, Washington formerly known as the Encore Ballroom. Katz renamed the club "San Francisco Sound". While in Seattle the group lived in the attic of an old house owned by Katz while writing and rehearsing new songs in between club performances. Few customers came to the club during It's a Beautiful Day's engagement in Seattle during December 1967.
The group's signature song "White Bird" was inspired by the experiences David and Linda LaFlamme had while living in Seattle. In an ironic twist on the band's name, the sad song was partly inspired by Seattle's rainy winter weather. In a later interview, David LaFlamme said:
"Where the 'white bird' thing came from ... We were like caged birds in that attic. We had no money, no transportation, the weather was miserable. We were just barely getting by on a very small food allowance provided to us. It was quite an experience, but it was very creative in a way."[1]

I wanted to play some Byrds after the Roger McGuinn solo. This looks pristine and plays wonderfully. It's interesting that a Greatest Hits record was released just three years after the band was formed, but they were busy and had lots of hits in those years with David Crosby and Gene Clark. They sold more of this album than any other, so it's not hard to find out there but worth grabbing if you find a clean one.

inspired by a discussion on why did psychedelic rock develop so fast? My take from wikipedia :D - "When viewed under the influence of such substances as LSD, psychedelic mushrooms, and peyote, a clock may appear to be a strange reference point and a useless tool for measuring the passage of events as it does not correlate with the user's experience. At higher doses, time may appear to slow down, stop, speed up, go backwards and even seem out of sequence."

I didn't see any signs of the RS day exclusives by that point, but I did have some fun w/ crate digging the sidewalk sales with my son (found a baker's dozen @ 75 cents), checking out the lively crowded stores. We snagged some free pizza and heard some live music.

went back to Doug's to pick up the B&O 4002 -return spring came off , it just cant seem to stay in tune , even when never moved-. :( ...and stopped at a thrift and found these....its a second copy for me of "Will O' the Wisp" , but I like "Got to get back to the Island" and this copy seems to have a lot less surface noise than my first copy...:D

Tumbleweed Connection ?? I was stuck in a darkroom aboard ship for too long (9 months at Yankee Station) ...we had a record player with build in speakers and 2 records...Abraxas & TC ....for many years later I could not listen to those 2 (having heard them repeated 3,812 (est) times) in the Navy....now I appreciated them again, in fact, Abraxas is one of my DiD's.

Good to have your company Tom. otherwise it is kind of empty in here ...is that an echo I hear?

My tastes were formed in the musical sweet spot (IMO) of the late 60s to mid 70s - the usual british invasion and early / classic rock and has been exploding outward since then -- probably like alot of folks.

I can't really say that I'm weeding since I'm still bringing home alot more all the time. I hit a couple of yard sales this morning in Seattle, and came home with 25 records.

I like alot of different music, and I think it's all about exposure, and that's what relatively cheap used LPs provides access to, including all the great stuff that is LONG out of print. And I wouldn't have guessed that I'd ever find interested in Ellington, Basie or Sinatra - but I'm enjoying these artists especially cool to hear original pressings on the cool old labels like Emarcy or Roulette. Good luck with your travels and with the crate digging. you never know when you'll run across something very special.

*Unlike the first Blue Ridge Rangers album where Fogerty anonymously transformed himself into his own backing band by playing all of the instruments, an all-star cast of supporting musicians were on hand for the new BRR project. These include Buddy Miller, Kenny Aronoff, Greg Leisz, Jay Bellerose, Jason Mowery, Herb Pedersen, Jodie Kennedy, Oren Waters, Chris Chaney, Dennis Crouch, and Hunter Perrin. "I'd long thought I'd do another Blue Ridge Rangers album," Fogerty commented, "and not make the mistake of playing all the instruments. These are fantastic players who really understand what the Blue Ridge Rangers vibe is about." Also joining in were Bruce Springsteen and Eagles' Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit who worked, respectively, with Fogerty on the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved" and Rick Nelson's "Garden Party."

I saw these guys when they toured in support of this record back in 1974.

Beatles - Hard Day's Night - EMI/Odeon German import

Did you buy it in the US ?? Normally would be on Capitol ...

Yes, purchased as an import title at a N. Seattle record store (Everybody's Records, iirc) for the princely sum of $6.

Remember when new in shrink US titles were sold for $4 in the early 70s?

Over the course of a few months probably in '74 or '75 I bought ~10-12 $6 import Beatles titles (UK Parlophones, German Odeon, and JPN Capitol iirc), all were dupes of US copies I already had, on advice from my brother and one of his record store friends. I'm thanking my brother to this day for that advice.

Now if I could just convince him to unbox his collection from his basement....they still have a couple of school age kids so it will be a few more years before he has time and space to get back into serious music listening (or maybe he'll stick with the disposable digital music on the run lifestyle, and let me at the dusty old records...??:applaud: :bouncy: )

In the 70's I didnt like shopping (esp @ Kmart) BUT, they had the bargain record racks ( 3/$1 ??) so I'd enjoy taking the OL there and pawing through their bins..ahh, the good old days....

Perfect weather today....picked up these 3...I of course have these Moodies already, but these were better condition than my existing ones....and had read good reviews abt this "Trio" album and it was cheap, so ......

Have been playing those 14 that I picked up last weekend...I have Abbey Road on the 2009 remaster CD set and am pretty familiar with it,,,,but sorry...I just like the vinyl copy better...sounds wonderful on the big a/d/s's

I loved that first album, but this new one is even better.

For sure .....had it going again ('bout the 3rd time thru) and the better half walked in and said "I thought you didn't like Country music" ??? .....couldnt come up with a quick , curt answer, but replied that generally I can take or leave it, but THIS album is very enjoyable..

"Haunted House" brings up some of the old Fogerty growl , really fun

I liked "Moody River" when Pat Boone did it and John does it well too

"Change in the Weather" doesnt have the extended guitar solo of the EOZ album
version but is a nice alternate take.

Oddly found myself mumbling along to "Back Home Again", tho not much of a John Denver fan...

Just looked it up: JF is abt to turn 65 ....wow we are gettin' old...:crying:

John Cameron Fogerty Born May 28, 1945

later, just found this:
Fogerty has also been nominated for a Grammy Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award) at the upcoming 2010 Grammys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/52nd_Grammy_Awards). He is nominated for the Best Rock Solo Vocal Performance Grammy for the song "Change In The Weather," which he recorded for The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blue_Ridge_Rangers_Rides_Again).

Disc: 2 1. Birthday 2. Yer Blues 3. Mother Nature's Son 4. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey 5. Sexy Sadie 6. Helter Skelter 7. Long, Long, Long 8. Revolution 1 9. Honey Pie 10. Savoy Truffle 11. Cry Baby Cry 12. Revolution 9 13. Good Night

I wonder what it takes to make records look as bad as some of them do. Even stored outside of a jacket, stacked and rubbed against other records or in one of those terrible wire rack things, I think it would be hard to do the damage we see on some copies. It's almost like someone took them out to the concrete driveway and rubbed them across the surface for a few minutes before dropping them off at the thrift store. I hate to see old records thrown away, but the ones that are scratched to hell should go straight to the dumpster, imo. There are enough VG+ copies of most good titles that I don't look twice at scratched up records, but there sure are a boatload of them in circulation for some reason. :dont-know:

This one starts the assault with "Ball Crusher" on track 1 and demands to be turned up loud with a song titled "Earschplittenloudenboomer". I like John Kay's writing and not just the "Don't Step On The Grass, Sam" or "Pusherman" from earlier Steppenwolf records. This is a nice quiet copy that cleaned up well on the VPI 16.5, and it's probably an upgrade over my other copy.
This is one of those records, like ELP Tarkus, Led Zeppelin 1, or Hendrix Are You Experienced, that is completely trashed 9 times out of 10 when found at garage sales or thrift stores. I know why...I had a friend in high school who had this record...was played to death in harsh conditions.

Ditto Exactly.

Future Games and Bare Trees are both split between the new Bob Welch music, a blend of his Soul band experience and his new found ability to write lyrics, and Danny Kirwan's Blues background. Kirwan and Christine McVie had stepped up on Kiln House after the loss of Peter Green. And now Jeremy Spencer was gone as well. Hear Danny's searing guitar work on "Morning Rain," still one of my favorite tracks. He also plays riffs and solos influenced by Nashville or The Shadows' Hank B. Marvin. Kirwan is a memorable talent, but he never plays anymore.

I doubt that the Peter Green era band was ever topped, but I consider the Buckingham-Nicks band to be the musical low point. I am not waiting for their next tour. I saw the 1975 tour and that was good enough for me. I went to hear Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer open, really.

Good times were to be found all around Mystery To Me, including Bob Weston's crack slide work on "Remember Me." Unfortunately Weston was also sleeping with Mick Fleetwood's wife and his departure left the album without tour support. And without sales. This album is flanked by Penguin and Heroes Are Hard To Find, both worth a look.

There have been bright spots since. In the mid 1990s FM boasted Dave Mason and Bekka Bramlett, two huge talents. (Cop a listen to the playing on the intro music here: http://www.dave-mason.com/home.html ) One album, Time.

(Not long ago here in Peoria a Blues Festival was well attended by young listeners. They came to hear bands they knew and were dismissive when a balding old man stepped up to the bandstand. Dave Mason then blew everyone, on stage and off, away. Totally.)

Recently, The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band sounded pretty good.

Tom, I am with you. This is great stuff. I have the USA releases of the material and the titles are different, but I think I have most of it. The Chess sessions in Chicago have been released under many titles. (I love the chatter between takes on those recordings.) A high point of my musical life was catching the band in Chicago in a big club when they were in to do the sessions.

The final US album of that band was silly great. Then Play On does not include "Albatross" Or "The Green Manalishi," but is otherwise all the last stuff they did. By the way, Green has stated that the record company reversed part one and part two of "Oh Well." The quieter bit was supposed to be first. That makes a lot of sense. I always wondered about that. Peter Green was the best guitarist I ever heard; that the guys in suits thought they knew music better than him is a cautionary tale at the very least. It reminds me of the time a secretary had to go into an executive meeting of a record company to tell the suits that they were previewing the latest Gordon Lightfoot release at the wrong turntable speed.

From here on to Fleetwood Mac - the 1975 white album - the songs on the disks are spotty. Only a hard core Mac guy like myself would like everything, but each has treasures to offer, starting with Kiln House. I wouldn't expect anyone to like Danny Kirwan and Bob Welch and Christine McVie and Jeremy Spencer. Let alone Jeremy's Elmore James slide work and his 50s Rock odes/parodies. Of course, everyone on the planet rightly loves the way Mick Fleetwood and John McVie play.

Time is even more divergent, but stick it out and you will find something to like.

In my humble Baby Boomer opinion, the musical legacy of Fleetwood Mac is the most impressive of any modern band. The Buckingham Nicks offerings are not bad as pop music, quite impressive actually. For me, the rewards of the rest of the catalog are simply so much greater.

The only other popular music band that comes to mind that has a huge, decades long catalog of work at a very high level is Santana. Now there are two desert island bands! (Tom, I seem to remember that you jumped off the Santana oxcart after Abraxas; Believe me, there is more.)

Since my memory is so bad, could you refresh it? You were at Yankee Station, not Dixie, right?

On the liner notes of TYA's Cricklewood Green, they mention that one of their 45's was 45 on one side and 33 on the other...they were at a French cafe and the juke box , of course, played both sides at 45 and nobody seemed to notice.

. Of course, everyone on the planet rightly loves the way Mick Fleetwood and John McVie play.

I noticed that the bass on the Mystery To Me album was quite startling, sounds like a big circus drum ?

Tom, I seem to remember that you jumped off the Santana oxcart after Abraxas; Believe me, there is more.

No..Santana 3 was very good too...then spotty after the personnel changes.

Since my memory is so bad, could you refresh it? You were at Yankee Station, not Dixie, right?

my recollection is that the smaller CVA's did Dixie..(Oriskany, Coral Sea etc)
CVA64 was one of the big ones, so we did the heavier duty jobs.

After 2 tours "in-country", went to Yankee Station for 9 months, tho we would go down to Dixie so that the mail plane could make it from Da Nang . I took that flying POC (C-46 ?) from the Connie with no cat assistance to DN, then a C130 to SGN (no seats-just prone on the deck) , another C130 to Utapo & BGK for a week and then a 707 to Clarke AFB and a wild ride to Subic to use up my leave time just before seperation.

(for non squids) ...Yankee carriers bombed North VN , while Dixie carriers interdicted the South.

Google has added App Store results to its mobile search page, allowing users to find and quickly download applications for their iPhone or iPod touch through a simple browser searchGoogle announced the new feature (http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/06/google-search-for-mobile-now-includes.html) on its official Mobile Blog this week. Software engineers Milena Nikolic and Paul Hadfield said the idea is to help users quickly download an application as they search for mobile app information.

Applications show up at the top of search results on Google's mobile site. Selecting an application launches the App Store and takes users to that software's specific listing. The creator of the software, as well as user reviews, are listed alongside the link.

Users can also select "more results for your iPhone," which automatically conducts a search within the App Store software and displays the results. The same search results do not yet provide App Store links on the iPad, which accesses the desktop version of Google search.

good music for a rainy sunday here. I think 1 and 2 includes a note from Peter Sellers on the back cover. This one includes a note from Susanah York: "Thank you so much for The Chieftains records. My Celtic mood has had no let up since I left Ireland. The music really does get me in the gut; give me memories I've never had."

Editorial Reviews

This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass. --Don McLeese

Ok, this is much better. I started to try another listen to VF's "The Beat Goes On" concept record from 1968, but had to break it off early on side 1. Apparently their first producer had too much license there. This one has a new producer and the hard rock sound that Carmen Appice and Tim Bogert carried on to Cactus and Beck, Bogert and Appice. Includes a 9 minute version of "The Windmills Of Your Mind" and a cover of a Goffin-King song.

I grabbed this copy a couple of years ago at a garage sale in less than optimal shape - ring wear and split seams on the cover and a few unplayable tracks from scratches but other tracks cleaned up well after a second cleaning on the RCM and these play well. Great playing and interesting lyrics. With a deluxe label / band logo as Elektra did for other bands like Love and The Doors.

Dallas Taylor, later with CSNY, plays here. from the back cover:

three years before Nash's #1 hit single "I Can See Clearly Now" he had a #5 hit single with "Hold Me Tight" and it's certainly recognizable to anyone who was listening to radio in the 60s. What's different is hearing it now in high fidelity versus the AM transistor radio at the beach. Recorded on the JAD label co-founded by Nash in New York in 1965, this is record sounds really nice. Includes a couple of Peter Tosh songs and a nice cover of Felix Caviliere's Groovin'.

2nd record from this R&B and country music influenced rock band out of Chicago. House band for awhile at the Whiskey A Go Go in LA, toured w/ Steppenwolf, Chicago, and Poco. Paul Cotton and Kal David, twin lead guitars, featured on the cover. Cotton went on to play with Poco, and David joined with Harvey Brooks to form Fabulous Rhinestones. This 2-eye sounds fantastic, with a lot of hard driving driving guitar-based instrumental playing. Cover photos by SF Rock photographer Herb Greene. I picked this up in a huge, mostly rock collection a couple of years ago, came across it yesterday while doing some sorting in the basement.

The underlying rhythm on the track is on appalachian dulcimer by Bert Jansch. I notice that you dont use a record clamp on the old vinyl.....I read abt them in catalogs, but wasn't going to put out $30-200 on one....so made my own...one is an old counter weight..the other is a hockey puck (now has a JBL label on it) , have used big rubber JBL subwoofer (china made ones) feet....anyway, you would be surprised on how much it flattens a record that already looks flat ,,,,and now the groove is more aligned to the stylus...

the counter weight one is centered with an old 45 rpm adapter...EZ.

Hey SeaWolf, nice work. I've seen hockey pucks and counter weights used. I have used a Michell record clamp on other tables, but use a Herbie's Way Excellent II turntable mat (http://herbiesaudiolab.net/ttmat.htm)on advice from my turntable guy who set up the Goldring Maestro on my Thorens, recomended the Pro-ject Tube Box II phono pre, etc. He said use the mat, forget about a clamp on the Thorens. The mat seems to work really well with the the Maestro MC cartridge. was $60 but nothing is too good for the LPs especially with the $500+$700 sunk in the phono stage. well regarded, here's the blurb on it:

Made from finely textured, open-cell silicone foam, this mat has unsurpassed vibration-absorbing characteristics and no resonant qualities to discolor the music. Records are thoroughly decoupled from unwanted platter vibration.
...
A black elastomer "donut" on top of the white foam base reduces vinyl/stylus feedback and eliminates lateral slippage. Unique qualities allow the vinyl to "give" slightly, microscopically, to stylus contact, allowing the record groove to be tracked smoothly and accurately. Completely non-tacky, records lift right off the mat, while the underlying foam sticks firmly to the platter (records can be lifted off while the platter is turning). Available in a variety of thicknesses and diameters to fit almost any turntable.
...

You've Got to Hear it!

:bouncy::applaud: CCR is a great mashup of American music traditions, up there with the Dead in my books. Good music to play on Independence Day.

Looks like the Chooglin' title is a Fantasy compilation of previously released material, published in 1982 according to the Goldmine guide. Last Fantasy release, they were milking the catalog, with CCR long gone. Maybe there was a special pressing along with a regular run? Goldmine just puts low average values on it...$4 in VG+. chooglin' is a fun swamp rock song on the Bayou Country record.

Ohio Players - First Impressions
(1972, Trip) compilation of material recorded in 1968

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records/ohio001.jpg

released by the Trip label to capitalize on the Ohio Players success in the 70s. This is gritty southern soul R&B material here, nothing like the later 70s releases.

Stopped at the thrift on the way home from Fathers Day Mongolian BBQ and picked up this pristine Santana double -nice version of BMW- for 85 cents (a buck minus senior discount)

I look for good copies of the Who on the Decca label, they seem to have more depth than the later pressings.

Last record with The Rumour. I can see the comparison to other "new wave" English singer-songwriters, Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello.

Happy Fathers Day. Mongolian BBQ is one of the places under consideration for dinner with my kids later today. :bouncy:

Yeah the first US pressings through 1971 are Decca, it's the label on record.

Who's Next

I just picked up the masterdisk copy of that one...still holds up well..

from Wiki:

The album cover shows a photograph, taken at Easington Colliery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easington_Colliery), of the band apparently having just urinated on a large concrete piling protruding from a slag heap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slag_heap). According to photographer Ethan A. Russell, most of the members were unable to urinate, so rainwater was tipped from an empty film canister to achieve the desired effect. The photograph is often seen to be a reference to the monolith discovered on the moon in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey_%28film%29), which had been released only about three years earlier.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who%27s_Next#cite_note-3) Director Stanley Kubrick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Kubrick) had declined to direct the film version of their earlier rock opera Tommy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_%28film%29) (1975); though the film didn't materialize until the mid-seventies it existed as a plan, and was ultimately directed by Ken Russell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Russell). In 2003, the United States cable television (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_television) channel VH1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VH1) named Who's Next's front cover the second greatest album cover of all time.

(1971, Decca)

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records/who002.jpg

a classic. I remember hearing this entire record played in sequence over the PA system while sitting in festival style seating prior to the start of at least one concert in the early 70s. the memory is hazy for some reason.
