Thoughts on the new Tori? I was thinking of picking it up myself.
I liked it. Good recording, which is most important to me these days. Nothing jumped out at me causing me to turn it off, like many poor recordings. Apparently her husband is the engineer, FWIW. There's an underlying synthesizer track and other loops throughout, though she also plays the big Bösendorfer and there are plenty of credited real (acoustic) instruments. My first impression is many songs sound like others, but that's usually the case with a new CD, and especially one with 17 tracks! Good dynamics. Typically impressive Amos voice . . . if you like her, or that style of female vocal. Downer lyrics but I'm too old to pay attention to that stuff anymore. I'm still trying to understand Donald Fagen.

I've seen Amos but I'm not a collector of her music. Some of my kids are and I picked up this one knowing they'd want to compress it into their iPods. I can say the production quality should stand up to your system, and that's getting harder to find. :)

At 45, they may have spent more production time on tinkering with the photos of her in the liner notebook than in the recording, which is fine with me. I didn't spend the extra two-bucks for the version with the DVD so I can't tell you what that's all about.

Most professional reviews of the album are luke-warm, at best. It's faring much better in fan reviews on Amazon and the majority of those familiar with her seem to find something of value in this current release. If you rank CDs by how many bytes they can jam onto one, this may be among the all-time leaders at 73-minutes of music. It's also available in a 2-disc LP version.

I mostly was at our only remaining local "record" store with my daughter, trying to bolster that sagging niche of our economy (she found two used CDs for me to buy for her) and the selection was so bad this was what I ended up with, though I'm not unhappy about that. I almost couldn't find the Jazz section anymore. Sadly most of their floor space is taken up with empty bin storage and I expect them either to fold or move to smaller (much smaller) quarters soon. :( Best Buy wasn't much better and I came away with what must be David Sanborn's newest release, Here&Gone. I can't say he's my favorite sax player but I do like him and I grew-up with his sisters. This one has Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, and Joss Stone on it. I'll give it another listen before I pass judgment.

Funny you should say that - just the other night I popped in a CD I've had for years now and which I've played many times on every iteration of a system I've owned, and I was actually compelled to turn it off for the first time. It actually made me [for a second] miss the days when my system was more forgiving, and I just blindly thought everything sounded good on it. Hell, I never even contemplated the quality of a recording until a few years ago. But, like you, it has become increasingly important, and I guess that - along with getting older - is subtetly shifting my musical focus towards genres that tend to be more well mastered and produced. Luckily the office system, while still nicely outfitted with JBL's, is not quite refined enough to render all but the worst recording unlistenable. ;)

Certainly agred about th scarcity of well-produced music. I actually do have most of her albums and am what I guess you'd call a "fan." I can say that (unlike most "pop" recordings) hers tend to stand up well to even very critical systems.

Yeah, there's one left in my neck of the woods. I've come to know the guy pretty well, and while he doesn't stock much, he can his hands on virtually anything I want. In a conversation recently, he flat out told me that the store wasn't his main revenue stream, and his side business is mostly what keeps the rent paid.

Anyway, I've rambled on enough. Thanks for your thoughts - hopefully, I'll pick up a copy this weekend. :)

It's a beautiful night here in the Mid-Atlantic, it was a pretty hellacious week at work, and this album reminds me of simpler times...

Last time I heard it on JBL's was probably the year it came out and I queued it up on my parent's system which at the time featured a pair of L46's; since everything always seems to come full circle, that's what it's playing on right now. With better upstream components, a sub, and proper speaker placement, it sounds better than ever. :)

Eh, just a few years ago ;). The roads were none too happy to meet me the day I started driving my 1973 Plymouth "Gold" Duster which was actually older than I was. Secured by modern-day safety features such as 4-wheel manual drum brakes and sophistaced lap belts, I was ready to tear up the street, and indeed I did. Of course, that started a MOPAR obsession that is only rivaled by my affinity for another certain brand to which I remain loyal to this day :)

You don't miss a thing do you :rotfl:Suffice it to say my parents purchased the very first JBL's I remember when I was eight years old, and being the adventurous lad I was, I got in quite a bit of trouble touching the equipment in the stereo store in which they were bought. I distinctly remember walls of McIntosh gear, and an entire jeweler's case of high-end cartridges and styli at the cash register. Needless to say I was absolutely enamoured by the entire experience, and I guess it's no wonder I find myself where I am today.

A few days after purchasing the JBL's they went back for a Luxman R-405 receiver (which replaced a KLH 52/A) and a JVC QLA-200 turntable. I may have been young, but I guess I had an eye for gear even back then. I researched a lot of this from memory, and even had to refresh the folks about what they had ;).

Pretty interesting to note is the year my parent's actually purchased the L46's - two years after they are listed as being manufactured by JBL. Might explain the pretty discounted price they scored them for given that they bought them at what was a high-end retailer...

...And this is why Lansing Heritage means so much to me to this day :D

Hi Folks,

like many of us the oldies are the GOODIES.

I just got this from Amazon . I grew up with this band and then lost interest with Avalon. Brian Ferry had just turned the corner toward his solo style ending right up the BALLARD . Don't get me wrong-I love a good ballard-but I felt he got a little too sweet for my 20 yr old taste.

Anyway, this is the re-mastered version and cost me a fiver. After the Led Zep fiasco I went off re-mastered versions of anything- but they did a brilliant job on this. Everything sounds balanced and detailed. Detailed without overly boosted mid to upper fq.

Just my opinion:

today was the most I've ever spent on LP's ..almost $14, 3 of the albums are doubles and all except the DeepPurple are in super condition.:D (the DP I wud call good) ...the white one with blocks on it is Pink Floyd 'The Wall'

Seawolf, That Steely Dan abum has the correct/original/best/most highly-sought-out version of one of their coolest songs ever...FM. Ive heard a newer/lamerrrr version :barf: that is on the cd and frankly, it sucks IMHO. That album is worth it weight in, lets say....Gold, for that song alone.

Thats what I'm talking about, pissed me off when I heard the version on the cd, which as stated sucked! & I stand by my previous statemnt :D

I believe the "Gold" CD was directed at mass-market distribution without the true Dan fan or "audiophile" in mind. I bought it, listened to it once, and relegated it to in-car use, only.

In my opinion, if you want a good CD version of "FM" you should be looking for the two-CD "Showbiz Kids: The Steely Dan Story 1972-1980" which contains re-mastered versions of some of their best, including "FM", and 32 additional classic cuts.

Babylon Sisters is also underrated as is Gaucho in general, great album w/Mark Knopfler making a nice cameo on time out of mind, his guitar playing is always so unique/original. Another Dan guitarist that comes up and is relevant to this particular little discussion is Rick Derringer ( on-my rival, another great song on gaucho). Listen to his slide guitar work on the song Showbiz Kids, it just blows me away every time I hear it, its so raw & just incredibly hot, played on our beloved JBLs & turned up loud it does not get any better.

Speaking of Rick Derringer, is anyone here familiar with his material, I picked up two of his cd's not too long ago (based on his performance on showbiz kids) and although not bad I was let down a little bit. Can anyone recommend some of his cds?

Sundays is 5 for a buck on the color of the week tagged media -green this week- for CD's/tapes/LP's ..so I got 5 + another 2 at a garage sale on the way home...7 for $2.

I'm on a Ronstadt kick right now and always liked Ms. Warwick...the others are a gamble except the BTO "Freeways" which had never been opened. :D

The KNACK -above- seems to be a 1 hit album...it was super nice today and the projects were in control so took the 15 mile vinyl safari ....all are in great shape..some look 'Unplayed"...the rainbow box set is 4 LP'S..:bouncy:

havnt read anything abt remastering , but the quality seems fine nevertheless.Actually, several user-reviews on Amazon touch on the meat of the issue. Here's one take:

"…An even bigger problem is that, as Messrs. Fagen and Becker have ruefully recounted many times in the years since, MCA didn't bother locating the master tapes for this... they used the same weak transfers that were done in the 80's and had someone tweak them a little bit. Adding insult to injury, they then reissued the individual albums with a sticker proclaiming them to be "Newly Remastered by the Artist". And you wonder why these guys record for a different label now. Sheesh.

Anyway, the story does have a happy ending. In 1999, Don + Walt presided over a _real_ remastering of the albums, with the help of Roger Nichols, who'd engineered the original albums. Those cds, available today, sound spectacular and feature groovy liner notes that tell a lot more about the band than this booklet does."

I'm an Eagles fan ....these live DVD's sound as close to a studio session as can be...this and "Hell freezes over" are prolly the best recorded live concerts that I've run into ....most of the favs are there, + Don Henley tunes and a little too many Joe Walsh ones.....of course a huge on stage entourage - 4 horns, violins, dancers etc etc- ....the 2 encores seemed hokey :( , but all in all a very enjoyable 2.5 hours :bouncy:

6-8 weeks ago I bought a second Sony MD-Jb930 minidisk deck and set it up in the HT driving the big Ohms' ....now I can dub from concert DVD's to MD and they are transportable to the LR JBL system or the portable MD player for bedtime listening..:applaud::applaud:

I recently received Steely Dan - Everything Must Go and Two Against Nature on DVD audio. I've had Gaucho for a few years and the three of them are great DTS studio mixes that enhance the original recordings.

What's playing now on the stereo is FourPlay (Lee Ritenour version) with an album of the same name.

been watching the concert DVD of Page & Plant's 1994's "No Quarter"

Plant - I can take or leave , does an OK job , but not a fav :)

Page- most assuredly 1 of the top 5 Rock guitarist ever :applaud: ..wow that guy can strum his ax :bouncy:

The Middle East support musicians do add flavor.

Some tunes slightly different than the CD ...good , but not outstanding audio - stereo only , I think.

Been listening to them for a while but I got a recommend off the Van Morrison Yahoo list
to tape Craig Ferguson Friday night - forget Rickles - the end of the show was a live set
with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - they did "100 Days, 100 Nights" -
very fine vintage 60s R&B with horns, classic sound and very tight!
Its like the James Brown Review from a newer band ... awesome stuff ...

Oops, I forgot to mention the Elton John 60 concert. It was done in Madison Square Garden several years ago when Elton turned 60. I have it on BluRay and it looks and sounds absolutely fantastic. It came from Amazon for about 20 bucks.

Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player is a favorite Elton John album. My sister owned it back when it was current, I got a really nice example in a box at a garage sale a couple of years ago.

"Beyond The Realms of Death" off of Judas Priest's Stained Class is the tune currently playing*. Quite a lot of similarities and differences between Sir Elton and Rob Halford, but damned if I don't respect and enjoy them both.

*Got a Crown PS-200 and a pair of 4612s in the circuit it's playing on, just for you. :D Gotta have a Crown and Cabaret pair in the mix, dontcha know.

so I did a long (20mile ?) FVS today..it was worth it.

For a CCR fan like me, finding 3 that I dont have is fantastic ..they obviously came from the same collection..all looked unplayed. The "Chooglin" album is like the Holy Grail for CCR aficionados ...it was a limited pressing on virgin vinyl by the masterwork process. I had bought one new, but I think my dotter in Whuppertal snagged it on a trip home.

The "Purple Passages" is like an early DP greatest hits double.

for an Eagles appreciator..the Glen Frey was an easy gamble.

I picked up "inna-godda-da-vida" and said "Why bother ? I have 4 copies" , but decided to slide it out and check condition...To my surprise ..it was still sealed...and no UPC, so I think it may be an original...had to get it then.

The eagle eyed Forumite may wonder.... a Lawrence Welk album ?? well, it is empty..but I thot it a great place to put my copy of "Sailor" (SMB) that currently doesnt have a jacket.

Sadly threw back the double of "Love, Peace & Happiness" (Chambers Bros.) that didnt pass condition exam. :(

Like the older BS&T stuff - but Humpback whale! Wow - found that a while back online.
But when I was in college, I had a friend that had a killer variant of that on vinyl -
"Humpback whales" on one side, "Cries of the Wolf pack" on the other -
I can still remember one track when the cubs would chime in - very cute - and eerie!

I just picked up a DVD of Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live at MSG. Simple 5 piece band with session guys like Chris Stainton on keyboards, Ian Thomas on drums and Willie Weeks on bass. Winwood plays mostly keyboards occasionally on guitar. One real gem is Voodoo Chile, they tear that one up! All in all a great DVD!Watched that one again last week. Good stuff!

Currently listening to Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor's Appalachian Journey and enjoying it on the 4345s even more than I did on the 030s. :D

The Cream reunion is on DVD and it is excellent. It has a bright red cover and is called "Cream, Royal Albert Hall, London May 2-3-5-6 2005."

When I was attending school in Berkeley in the mid to late 1960s, Suzy Q was on the radio and CCR was still playing high school dances around the area.

Clark, I tuned for Regina Spektor when she performed at the TED conference in Long Beach earlier this year. She seemed very nice and her music had a lot more going rhythmically and dynamically than some other girl-at-piano acts I have heard. Not thinking of Norah Jones here, she's my fave.

I've looked for this on CD for awhile--Ten Years After "Rock and Roll Music to the World." I love this album--there's nothing on it I don't like. It's available as an import. Alvin "Lightning Fingers" Lee can sometimes go overboard on blues, but this album is both tasty and tasteful. Yes, yes--I know--the critics never liked this one as much as "A Space in Time," or "Cricklewood Green," but it's always been not only my favorite Ten Years After album, but one of my favorites, period. On a different level entirely, I also pulled out my rare old copy of "Alvin Lee & Mylon." Mylon LeFevre's father was so upset his son had made an album with a long-haired British rocker, he tried to buy up all the copies he could find and destroyed them. Strange. It's the most mellow thing Lee ever did so far as I know, although "I'm Gonna Keep on Rockin' Till the Sun Goes Down" is an excellent low-key rocker.

I'm sorry--I didn't mean to cause frustration--I thought the "Maybe a Stupid Reply" bit would be a clue that the reply was what they call in France or somewhere, "tongue in cheek," but I don't know why. It was an attempt at humor, but evidently not a successful one.

But back to Ten Years After--"A Space in Time" is truly a classic. Alvin Lee still has a band, you know--The Alvin Lee Band. He sells direct to the public from his web site--the last few albums have been very good, but not up to the "classic" standard of his earlier days--although, technically, he's still as good as ever. It's the creative energy that's fallen off.

The Rubber Soul & King Crimson have 1 scratched side and 1 perfect so I gave them a try....LZ is a double...:D I just watched the DVD ...The Pink floyd & Syd Barrett story ....which is really strange as I picked up an album mentioned in the movie ....the unreleased "Vegetable Man , where are you ?"
according to the interviews..."wish you were here" was written for the drug lost Syd ..the line "2 black holes in the sky" are his eyes...

well yesterday I watched..Shine a light ; directed by Martin Scorsese.

Recorded at New York's Beacon Theatre during the fall of 2006, and features performances by The Rolling Stones with special guests Christina Aguilera, Jack White, and Buddy Guy.

I drew 2 conclusions from it...:(

1, I enjoy the Stones in studio more than in concert.
2. I dont enjoy Martin anywhere.

audio not very good, cinematography nothing special, nor direction.

(and I'm a Stones fan)

For all I know this could be the tenth time I've promoted this fine CD here, but in pulling it out once again (family out at the movies) I continue to be impressed. And not just because I heard most of it performed live or that I have a twenty-five-year history with its predecessor, but because it's so well recorded, the instruments so well-played that it's a real treat so rare these days.

Chiaroscuro arrived today..quite nice stuff, thanks for the tip!I was fortunate to be able to see Mike Marshall and Darol Anger perform most of their Woodshop set recently at a tiny venue here in town just before it shut down for lack of interest. We were approaching the 25th anniversary of that earlier album so I brought my copy along in hopes of getting it autographed. Mike and Darol were shocked to see the early version with the larger photo and were only too pleased to sign it for us.

They are truly among the best at what they do. I'm sure they must play at the Birchmere on occasion. Be sure to catch them, and say "hi" to Vander who runs the monitors there. He won't remember me!

Wow! Looks like The Subdudes are playing there a week from Saturday. Delbert's there in November! Holy Sh*t, Fourplay is there in December. I sense a Lansing Heritage Mid-Atlantic Christmas party coming up. :D

Did the 22 mile safari while biking weather holds out (did have to duck under trees to avoid sprinkles a couple of times) ...it was worth the trip ...see 6 new LP's...

The Dire Straits was so clean that I played it w/o prepping....WOW ..sounded great ...the store also had Hiway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde , Nashville Skyline and Blood on the Tracks ...but none of them passed condition exam. :(

Some may remember a while back I acquired a dead Adcom GFA-555 and revived it ...last week I decided not to sell it and placed it into the 2nd livingroom system...the Denon DRA-750 receiver is playing preamp for the Adcom...there is a switch and can run either the Adcom system OR the BGW system to the 250ti's , so can use 2 different turntables...

If anyone is interested, a GFA-555 is a very good match for the 250ti's...detailed highs/mids and very solid bass ...seems a nice bargain amp solution...and its a Nelson Pass design ...:D

so got up to audition the new vinyl from this last week ..

have only had "461 Ocean Blvd" on MP3 and liked it a lot..so it was first up..

WOW, I was blown away by the detail and nuances that wernt there in the MP3...:applaud:

Clapton is a somewhat weak singer and on solos ..barely makes the cut.., but
with the female backings the whole tunes get much better ..part of the joy of LPs is the album jacket -with info- ...the female backer was Yvonne Elliman..
I dont know much abt her, but her strong clear voice really salvaged some of Erics tracks.

Are there any certain tunes of hers to look for ?

My wife surprised me with the deluxe set, bless her heart. These are songs I've heard probably thousands of times, but I'm hearing things I never heard before, in, most significantly, John's great rhythm guitar and some appealing nuances of Paul's bass playing I never noticed before.
I'd have to rate this remastering job as one of the best I've heard. But perhaps some of what I seem to be hearing for the first time after all these years is a result of the high-definition speaker system I recently completed featuring four 7-inch aluminum cones and a textile dome per enclosure in a 2.5-way configuration, tall, slender towers, not at all like my old Altecs--these things just soak up power, the more the better--225 watts each produces no audible strain, and they act like more would be appreciated--and they sound clear and articulate even at very high volume levels, but they're sure not very efficient, even vented. Anyhow, for all the Beatle appreciators among the music lovers who post here, I recommend this set highly. It's one that's truly worth what it costs.

We listened to the Beatles "Something New" at dinner last nite ...still sounded fresh & clean ....the DJ guy kept the LP's is great shape ...too bad the cat had scratched the cardboard splines

Looking forward to running the 4 test records. The Command Stereo LP has a clear acetate sheet inside to record your results on their graph with a grease pencil.

have lots of cleaning to do, now that the weather is souring , bike time will be limited. Wont put a "NEW" (to me) LP on to play until its been cleaned (with rare exceptions)

I met the seller through her CL ad for a Technics SP-15 with EPA-500 arm mounted in an oak table, with Kenwood receiver, cassette and unknown speakers for $125 ....looked up the table & arm and they seem valuable
I was too late on the gear haul.. :(

LATER: I had browsed abt 2000 records to select 42 ...1 needs cleaning...3 had condition issues...so 39/42 is a pretty good score ...92%=A :applaud::applaud:

If it weren't so far a drive...wish we could return and rebrowse at a more leisurely pace.

So i had Zephyr playing "Hard Drivin' Woman" and my son who is a big
"White Stripes"/Jack White fan comes into the room and stops to listen..

then he asks "Is that the new White Stripes album ??? I had to chuckle as Zephyr did this tune before Jack was born ;) , but I checked it more carefuller and darned...THATS where Mr. White got his sound...almost interchangeable ('cept for the vocals)

It was a rainy / gray day in Oregon....all summer I've been getting the gear together (fenders/gortex parka/gloves/etc) so that I can ride in the rain ...today was the test and worth the ride..:D

Had never seen the Clapton album before,,nor the Eldorado ELO one.
the Moon Landing one (radio conversations and music looks fun) ..I'm not a fan of "YES" ..but am going to force myself
(like Alex in Clockwork Orange) to see if some appreciation can be gained ...as a Ronstadt fan it was nice to find her 3 LP boxed set in E++ condition :applaud: ( I didnt even know she had one)

I just spent some time with this Feat's set my brother-in-law loaned me, Hotcakes and Outtakes. Nice re-mastering and a very interesting written history in the 75-page book that comes with it. I was always a fan of Little Feat and saw them several times in the '70s, but this was an eye-opening account of the rise, fall, and attempt to rise again, with some unusual tracks.

Then I changed moods to David Sanborn's latest (I assume), Here & Gone. A little jazz, a little blues, and some help from Derek Trucks and Eric Clapton (on separate tracks) that produce cuts that are some of the best from both of them. Great recording quality for those of you burdened with systems that can often reveal too much of the recording's flaws and engineering deficiencies or over-zealous compression and boost. Highly recommended, from start to finish. Good horns-on-horns, once again.

Acquired "The Platinum Collection: 40 Great Tracks", imported from England. One disk is entitled "Flying Home," which showcases Hampton's work with big bands, the other is entitled "Hot Mallets" which is, in my opinion, the better of the two, and centers on his work in small groups. Hampton is THE master of an instrument (the vibes) not heard so much today, but which is like no other. These tracks are not digitally remastered, just repackaged, but the playing is, as always, just great.

The discs and music sound exceptional - crisp and clean- tho I've so far, only played them on the L200-plus system, and not on the biamped 4 ways downstairs ... quite a treat - can't wait until I have more time to appreciate them!

Anybody else taken any of these new reissues out for a drive?

I have been tuning my "new" JBL Floor Monitors and have been using Metallica's "Black Album", as my guide. Hey I am a rocker at heart and event though this is Heavy Metal :applaud: I really like the in your face the sound Enter Sandman sounds through 4 JBL 2214H's being driven by a SAE 2401. :D

My wife got me the full-tilt boxed set. I too was anticipating a "better" version of the earlier albums, but there's a disclaimer--the earlier stuff was primarily mixed for mono, the dominant medium of the time, so all the instruments were mixed down to one track, the vocals to the other. The result is that the "stereo" versions of these albums is STILL ridiculous, so I just punch the "mono" button for listening to them.

Well...I'm unimpressed with her new production crew. I want to hear her voice. I don't want to hear her voice double-tracked with the effects turned up to increase the room size and reverb, and layered with noise. Or synthesized/enhances with fuzz, and saturated and compressed. The production quality of her latest is pretty much like anything else these days with the exception of maybe two stripped-down songs that still mess with the "hall size" button. Quite sad since I'll always recall Donald Fagen's high praise for her previous recording "Not too Late" and its production and sound quality. Now she's saturated, compressed, loud and the lack of natural dynamic range is compensated for with more effects.

I'm not sure this one will find its way into my normal rotation. Sadly.

CCR - A great debut album

I saw them in the Bay area (Pleasanton Race track) in '69 (or was it 68 ? them days are foggy) ....Fogerty took the mike and announced that "the next song is from our upcoming album" ...they played "I put a Spell on You" (which was wrong, since the first album was already out - but we didnt care)

San Francisco International Pop Festival, Alameda Co. Fairgrounds, Pleasanton CA 10/26-27/1968. w/Johnny Rivers, Jose Feliciano, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, Canned Heat, and others.

I'm not a big ELO fan , but have given "El Dorado" its share of spin time this week and really like it....
a concept album (in the spirit of SPLHCB - in some reviews) - recommended.

for those type CCR cuts, I also like "Graveyard Train" & "Side of the Road" ...."Walk On The Water" is a carryover from their Golliwog days.

Can only remember CCR & Canned heat from the whole lineup ...slight impairment ....the festival ran out of tickets and the crowd flattened the fences , was a FREE Concert after that. :)

I was enjoying the licorice pizza version of "461 Ocean Blvd" today , and scoping the jacket.....an inconsistency jumped off the photos at me ...the 2 pics of Erics house are a little different ..

Well there is wire (tv antenna?) trailing down from the "chimney" on the left side of picture #2, and that is missing in picture #1 ... assuming both shots are from the same side of the house, which they appear from studying where the palm trees are both pictures.

Have always liked 461 - kind of unsettling, but in a good way.

He was there and offers insider info on the FabFour...starting as an 15 y.o. at EMI and working his way up the chain ....he got so fed up that he quit the Beatles in the middle of the White Album...but really a down to earth guy..Geoff Emmerick ...he also designed the Apple recording studio (they mention the speakers as Altec in passing)

library has it and its a great read ....didnt know that Alan Parsons was an asst engineer b4 heading out on his own....recommended :applaud:

so there was a glimpse of sunshine today..grabbed the TREK and set out on vinyl safari ....it was 51 degrees and was actually too warm in my biking bundle...found a nice copy of LR and the whole trip was covered by one of the best soundtracks on my pod

Question: anyone out there listen to Music Choice off their cable TV? Is this feed considered high rez audio, any better than a redbook CD? The audio quality is really really good fed via HDMI to my HKAVR from the DVR.

It comes up as 2.0 rather than 3.0/2.1 on the display so I'm assuming it isn't, but some channels, in particular the R&B stuff, has breathtaking soundstage on the L7s, to the point where switching between 5ch and 2ch audio sounds about identical, much better than many of my CDs.

WOW !!! I picked up the Herbert von Karajan-Berliner Philharmoniker
complete Beethoven's 9 Symphonies ....in FLAC from the SACD

Its just overpoweringly great :applaud: LVB certainly evokes lots of emotion and the better a recording/performance is ...well, the more awesomer it is....:D

LATER EDIT: It just feels like the 250ti's were made for the 5th symphony ...outstanding !!

MORE LATER EDITS: I was rainy today and stayed inside ...also new on the PC today was the soundtrack to the movie "Crimson Tide" ...WOW..that will give your JBL's a workout..esp if you have a good sub (pun intended)

got out on the TREK Sunday and found these 2 Beethoven sets ...each is 5 LP's with a booklet...looks like they've never been played...the store had them at $3/set , but it was half price day...so 10 Deutsche Grammophon - Karajan disks for $3.

All the rest were 50 center's ...had never seen the Eagles double b4, the Robert Cray is very nice too :applaud:

I think I've read that the site is in Renton. There's a cool statue on Broadway, just down from the Seattle U. campus, and across the street from Seattle Central Community College. Ah, learn something new every day... no mention of this in the wikipedia piece I looked at. Rickie Lee Jones was a military brat as well, and spent alot of her teen years in Olympia, WA, still has family there I think.

Szabo's version of "GQ" is far different that Carlos's that ends in the 3 guitar slam ..WHAM..WHAM..WHAM at 45 seconds left and culminates in the fantastic tuned feedback ....have not heard any other recording by CS where he did GQ as well as on Abraxas ........Outstanding :applaud:

after my post last night abt Abraxas , went to bed with the pod & IEMs ...I had just reloaded the pod as it seems to distort when tunes are deleted and added over time. Abraxas is one of those "have to always be on the pod" albums...so got up and added it.

Gypsy Queen on there is really intense and I had the gain rather high , so on the 3 guitar WHAMS at the end of GQ , felt my eyes wincing at each one ....think I had a big smile too ...:D

the pod doesn't push enough power for the preferred Senn HD-580's , but does fine on the IEMs ...but my minidisk portable does handle the Senns well ...mebbe I'll put Abraxas (the only MFSL disc I ever bought) on to MD and really do it right ...:applaud:

Yeah they were contemporaries, and the drummer was actually from the same N. Seattle high school. I know that for awhile one of the sisters had huge old estate/mansion in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle very close to Volunteer park. Great players, and Ann with that singing voice. They made some nice sounding records in the 70s, mostly played too much for me now, but still fun - hard to choose but I think Dog & Butterfly is the current favorite.

Thanks, it's a nice record - Blue Bayou and In Dreams and alot of interesting stuff. What a voice that guy had - "the Caruso of rock". This was in a ~1500 LP collection that I picked up a couple of years ago - at a local garage sale. I did the usual "do you have any records?" and the older guy said uh, yeah I'm moving, they're just taking up space, and need to find a new home. Lots of interesting early 60s rock, folk, country, jazz mixed into the usual roger whittaker thrift store schmaltz. I came back with my truck and $75. :D

I got abt 80 albums from the estate of a local DJ who died in 1981..abt 3/$1 ...missed the Technics SP-15 with EPA-500 arm mounted in an oak plinth with receiver & speakers for $125 that was also in the ad

OK, so the weather wasn't too bad , no rain , not too cold, so I GoreTexed up and set out on the TREK for 1st vinyl safari of 2010...first thrift was closed, tho normally open on Sunday, but the 2nd had 50% day....I rounded up abt 20, but condition disqualified all but 8 ..not too bad for $4 ...its my 2nd backup copy of "Building the Perfect Beast" (a DID) , but perfect condition vinyl (cover only OK). I like Rhonstadt and didnt have this one...soundtracks are a gamble, but many are great........nice start to the New Year :applaud:

hello!

though i never liked classic norwegian blackmetal, and did never understand its sincerness (these guys must be kidding??), i do admire its other-worldness.
a big friend gave me an album by the band "out to lunch" lately, called "kullboksrytter". might not be BM, but with that i have at least some norwegian JAZZ spookin over my asio :)
(coming with boots and spikes just the same)

i dont know anything about this band/music else than it is cool, lush and highly interesting. it swings, too!

The new guitarist seems a fortuitous combination of Santana, David Gilmore and Akkerman influences. I think his name is Niels van der Steenhoven.

For my taste, some of the nicest music I have heard in years. I'll look for the CD, Focus 9 / New Skin

I love the way this thread leads me to new voyages of discovery.

Wow. That must have been a show. I was 10 in '66 so I missed out on seeing Buffalo Springfield but saw the band members in their later pursuits. The first time I saw Neil Young was the CSNY 1974 tour, opening show in Seattle (http://www.suitelorraine.com/suitelorraine/Pages/csny74.html) (link to Rolling Stone article on that show) on August 15th - they hadn't toured for a few years, & were so excited they played from 9pm until 1:30 in the morning, 44 songs in the setlist, what a show.

A CD by Steve Winwood from 2003. Since I happened upon this in a local thrift shop for two dollars last Fall, a favorite. Last night through the Stax Omega II headphones it seemed better than ever.

It sounds like a marvel of recording to me, and the music is as good as he has done since early Traffic. While it doesn't sound anything like "40000 Headmen" or "Crying To Be Heard", maybe even stronger in places and never less so.

It is a trio and Steve plays only Hammond, no guitar. He sings everything, of course. I had not heard of the guitarist or the drummer, but everyone is on their game. Unlike Winwood's recent release, is is not compressed to death and rewards the best gear you have to play it on.

saw this band in 72 or 73; very intense w/ the twin lead guitars & mostly instrumental pieces, great show; great record
guitars may be the stars of the show, but I like how the drums are given equal footing in this recording.

I saw CSNY at the newly restored Auditorium Theater in downtown Chicago. The Adler/Sullivan hall has perfect acoustics. Joni Mitchel opened. The boys said "this is the first time we have ever played together." They meant CSN with Young. It was not long after Woodstock. It was f**king awesome. I don't think I ever saw Stills again.

Years later in Peoria I missed Manassas in the Bradley Fieldhouse because I didn't have even the few bucks for admission. Hardly anyone came and they blew the doors off with a great concert to reward the handful who cared to actually show up.

I did get to see Neil on a tour that combined the Trans material with a second set with The Shocking Pinks.

Wow, that must have been incredible. Neil and Stills were monster guitarists and Nash and Crosby with those laser harmonies, nothing like them. I saw Neil Young last year, and he was an absolute monster on the guitar - it reminded again of the '74 show.

Joni says that what I saw was the night before they went to Woodstock. Good lord, those were heady times. Stephen was such a monster talent. That he, Young and Furray were in the same group was amazing.

Care to discuss seeing the Byrds back in the day? I bet you have a history with them too.

I wish! :( I wish I'd see the Byrds (or the Flying Burrito Brothers for that matter). Didn't do alot of concert going until about 1972/73 (age 16, 17), so I pretty much missed the train for the Byrds.

I bought most of their early records, and I have at least a couple of nice "360 Sound" mono pressings. I listened to the "Untitled" double LP last weekend, really like the live side including their version of Lover Of The Bayou.
