scofield is more in the avant garde jazz vein unless he changed in recent years.if you are into blues i can probably recommend some .what kind are you into.i cant think of anyone off hand that plays blues with a classical influence unless you mean "classic blues"if you mean that as traditional there is tons out there,great stuff but the sound quality varies.two of my favorite of the more up tempo albums are hoodoo man blues.......junior wells,and i am the blues ............willie dixon.for a more traditional style try muddy waters......folk singer.its like a bottomless pit and one album always seems

Jim, I must admit that I do not know all your names and titles, not everything swashes over the Atlantic. john scofield is a new york based guitarist that spent time with miles davis.at one time the blues was not popular in north america until clapton,mayall et all repackaged it and sold it over here.after a time folks started to ask who this muddy waters or willie dixon is as the names kept turning up on led zep and other records.it led to a treasure trove of stuff which is along with jazz a truly american artform.if you get sat radio its well worth the time to explore.here most everyone likes the chicago up tempo blues style but i am more into the
more traditional forms.there are many regional styles and when blues and country met gospel i believe rock and roll was born.now i gotta go find out about this guy from manchester

This was recommended By Ken some time ago and I finally bagged it. Instantly one of my favorite recordings of all time. The quality holds up really well, too. Sort of an "in the room" feel to it, spatially. It is the Mobile Fidelity SL version.

I have been a fan of Muddy nearly all my life, even sneaking into a club underage to hear him live. This CD is my new favorite.

John Williams Star Wras Episdoe IV A New Hope sections of the various tracks that I played in Dolby Pro-Logic II Music Mode, where score goes really crazy with string instruments panning and fading in and out of the fronts and surrounds as well, now the trickery of the Dolby Pro-Logic II mode when analyzed carefully with film soundtracks does show a few faults of crosstalk between what should playing up front. Still it’s good a feature as it stands for non Dolby dts 5.1 music tracks.

Switching to James Horner Titanic in dts 6 channel 20 bit does sound very surprising with lots of low end support and individual placement of instruments over the three-screen fronts. Split-surrounds fade in at different moments and are completely isolated from crosstalk add terrific harmony on track 14 “My Heart Will Go On” (Celine Dion).

I almost to forget to mention the LEF.1 support, this gives an extra muscular oomph down to 25Hz on the JBL 4645 Control 5 adds transparency while surrounds made up of 6 JBL control 1 in standard surround mode, immerse down the side and rear walls.:applaud: Now taht's surround.

Regrettably it’s the only dts CD that I have apart from a (dts set-up disc) and a (music demonstration CD) from 1999.

I listen to a lot of MP3's. Music from the 60's and 70's usually has noise/tape hiss, which is annoying.
Started playing around in Nero and found the "wave editor" . Its nice for chopping out or splicing in cuts from albumwraps.
It also has a noise reduction feature where you can play with the "gain floor". If you are careful with the settings, the older tunes can sound almost like the ones recorded today.

My only gold MFSL disk is Abraxas and I've really made a great sounding version with Nero.

Maybe a solution for those that like classic music on a limited budget.

Just been listening to (Jean Sibelius: Finlandia Opus 26) on Classic FM with late night Lisa she’s the babe with a sweet voice on the airwaves at night-time.

The first time I heard this classical piece was back in 1990 Die Hard 2 during the end credits it was moving sombre piece that placed my mind in a relaxed mood with up-moving string movements then dropping down to a mellow mood loving I just like hearing (Finlandia Opus 26) from time to time.:)

I love controlled feedback, and practice it whenever possible. Must be annoying to listen to me practice, though...

The band 'School Of Fish' used it a lot, among others. Their first album is a favorite of mine, "Human Cannonball" (their second album) less so but still good with really chewy guitar tones. The drum/percussion sounds on the song "Fuzzed & Faded" are pretty large, too.

Composer (Howard Shore) was voted number 1 in yesterday’s top 50, countdown voted by the listeners of Classic FM as best movie score “The Lord of the Rings”. I think this is the second year running now.

I just got finished making a cd from an old LP I haven't had a chance to hear for awhile and listened to it in the car on my way to work this morning--Super Session, Michael Bloomfield, Steven Stills, and Al Kooper with an equally stellar supporting cast--it reconfirmed my long-standing estimation of this recording's version of "Season of the Witch" as the best I've heard.There's also a remastered CD version that includes some extras like the version without the "horns added as an afterthought". Sounds weird after all these years. Still one of my favorites. The back story in the re-released CD is amusing, about how Bloomfield failed to show up for the second day in the studio so Stills was called in on an emergency basis.

Now that's a tidbit I didn't know. Given Bloomfield's early efforts to combine rock-blues sensibilities with jazz (which had been attempted by Love, as well), I'd never have thought of the horns as "afterthoughts." I got the remastered version you mentioned, and I have to say you're right--after listening all these years and not realizing the "afterthought" nature of the horns, it sounds weird to me without them.

I have to confess, I'm busted. I have been such a huge fan of Neil Young for so long it is almost embarassing to talk about it. He has been my favorite musician and favorite songsmith for most of the last thirty-nine years. As much as twenty years at a time. If I had not been turned on to heavy jazz in 1975 or so, I am not sure I would have other musicians to call heroes.

I feel so strongly about the talent of Neil Young I rarely speak of it. Kind of private, like faith. I suppose some of you feel the same way about a musician or two you have been exposed to by life's circumstances. The power that music has to move a soul is truly a wonder.

I saw CCR in SF at a horse racing track in '68/69. They previewed a song from their upcoming record ..."I put a spell on you" . Canned Heat played too. Ended up being a FREE concert,

The tickets were sold out and too many were waiting to come in, SO they just trampled the fence over and we all walked in. :applaud:

found this while looking for "John Fogerty - The Long Road Home" at the lib. pretty good reissue of the classics.

The book covered the many different ways Fantasy Records has milked the CCR catalog. Did not know that Tom Fogerty died of AIDS in 1990. And that John refused to play the CCR hits for 20 years, until the "Welcome Home - Vietnam Vets" concert in D.C. He had not intended to do so , but felt an obligation.

The profits from managing CCR were used to produce the films "One flew over the cuckoos Nest" and "Amadeus"

CCR was a headliner at Woodstock , but was cut out of the movie and soundtrack and very few who did not attend knew they were even there !!

well. I watched "BLOWUP", London high style photog tracking down hidden murder in glorious 1966 1.0 surround sound (mono).

Although this is a DVD in a music thread, it featured the Yardbirds playing live and soundtrack mainly by Herbie Handcock, with a little bit of Lovin' Spoonfull.

Won 2 Oscars.

Movie was kinda weird. The Yardbirds (with Jimmy Page)are jammin along to "Train kept rollin'" , and the audience sits like statues,, not a toe tap or head nod at all , just like stone statues.
Lead guitar gets funky, starts popping , and the player smashes it and jumps on the carcass. Tosses broken neck to the crowd , who now come alive and fight over it. Movies main char grabs it and runs. Crowd chases.

He gets free , makes his way to the street , takes a look at it and drops it to the sidewalk and walks away. An observer picks it up and examines it and drops it again.

Geez--I have a copy of that movie--it's one of my all time favorites, and for all these years, including when I first saw it in a theater back when it first appeared, I thought that was Jeff Beck.

I’ve been listening to a variety of tracks from (Anne Lennox) she’s one female artist with clearly milky silk lyrics that can be cleanly understood. “A Whiter Shade of Pale” has good background support, with the backing choirs, that flows gentility around and yet it can still be played loudly enough to fill the room.

Oh, man, that's been awhile Jim. You'd be lost here now. The coaster was US71, which is now I-540. Heck, we even got them there ellyvators and jet airyplanes and sich now, thicker'n dogpeckergnats on a blue tick hound. You'd be hard pressed to find a jukebox though, 'specially one with Roger Miller's King of the Road, or maybe Patsy Cline's Walkin' After Midnight fer a nickel.

I was watching the Glastonbury simalcast last nite. Iggy Pop, even at 60 odd can still get a croud going. 170.000 people. What a man ! they interviewed him after his set. He was awsome. He said it was the best gig he's ever done. He could stand up without help to start with ! . He said it reminded him of the US festivals of the early 70's.

I came downstairs and got the Lou Reed out, then The sensational Alex Harvey Band, Genesis Live. Emerson ,Lake and Palmer,Black Sabbath.

I'll stand with you on that album. There's just something missing about phil. It must have been that little fling he had in the eighties with the fella from Earth wind and Fire.
Peter Gabriel on the other hand. He's playing up the road today at Hyde park, but as usual its bloody pissin it down here in London. Gabriel really is switched on.The man has integrity, he makes music about his inner journey.

I heard this on XM and had forgot how good it was. Cud not remember the artist . Sounded like Wilson Pickett or Sam and Dave , so I looked it up.


THE BUCKINGHAMS !! - 5 white teenagers from Chicago. All I remembered from them was kinda bubblegummy , Beatle wannabe music. The web says they picked the name to be British sounding and they were voted "The Most Listened To Band In America” in 1967 , selling more records that year than any American artist except The Monkees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monkees).


The song was written by Cannonball Adderly's pianist and the original by CA is great also.


I did find at least 3 variations on the lyrics.

A friend got me on a Mile Davis kick .. he had recommended Mark Isham's "Mile Remembered: The Silent Way Project". Its a series of songs based on stuff Miles did at various time, but uses Mile's song as a startoff point to improvise from - some is mellow, some kick in your face fusion chops.
That got me interested in finding Mile's "Complete In A Silent Way Sessions" very cool stuff - almost new agey in places, its the album just before the fusion of Bitches Brew.
Oh - and I finally found a copy of Charley Parker with Strings ... this stuff all
sounds so sweet on the L200-plus speakers downstairs ...

Thanks! So I guess this means I have to hunt down his solos stuff to have a listen. I liked Metheny with Gary Burton, and even some of his stuff when he branched off, (even the Joni Mitchell work with Jaco) but - there is just so much of Pat's later work ...

So now I'm loading two discs I just got from Amazon into iTunes -
Les Paul: 90th Birthday Edition (a greatest hits collection), and Merle Haggard: 20 Greatest Hits.
Les, of course, from the folks here who prompted me to watch a recent Public TV show about all his innovations, both musical and technical.

Merle is just curiosity. We recently watched an old concert of "The Highwaymen" in Scotland, we liked their sound and figured "Johnny (Cash) is gone and Waylon (Jennings) is gone and we don't care that much for Chris (Kristoferson) - hmm - better catch Willie (Nelson) while he's still around!" Anyway, we got tickets for Willie Nelson at a small local venue in early September and Merle is the "warm-up" act, so I figured I should check out more of his material at least ...

I mean, it can't be Eno and shoegazer stuff all the time, right? :applaud:

Country is my blind spot. I grew up in the UK did'nt really get much exposure to Willie and the likes. I respect any musician that can produce work with integrity for the amount of time that he has. Johnny gets a nod .
the last thing he did of cover tunes. To be that big and to be able honour his influence shows the man's class (humility)

Early Eno , music for airports got a bit cliche after 9.5 weeks. He teaches at the Royal College of Art now ,Multi media. Good course.

As the title states; anyone have a copy of the Stephen Stills CD released in the early '90s, "Stills Alone"? It's been unavailable for some time and used originals bring up to $200 used. I'm not that crazy, but I would love a CD-R "archival copy" (is copying really so reprehensible if the publisher won't publish the original?) if anyone has the ability to provide it. Cover your expenses, for sure, or something else to trade?

Being enjoying some rattle and hum and shuddering low end kick with U2. I made a few adjustments to fit the mix into the room, with a slight boost in the 125Hz range on LCR trimmed the 62Hz and 125Hz on the LFE.1 boosted the 32Hz slightly for the JBL 4645 which shuddered the room “Where The Streets Have No Names” deeply and pleasing on this fine sunny summer day.

Lyrics came though clearly with little competition of the left and right instrumental. Not a bad concert rock film and in no is it dated, no way.

The film has monaural surrounds that add crowd atmosphere and occasional reverb instrumental along the sidewalls that was handled easily via the JBL control 1, while the control 5 up front in active crossover mode sang brightly with transparency and spackle.

I see there’s a HD-DVD and Blu-Ray version due out very soon this year.:)

Getting into some Jean Michel Jarre in China, it opens with very dynamic orchestral number with shuddering timpani that rocked the pillows of Forbidden City, clarity over the whole range of channels was staggeringly realistic.

Classic pieces from Oxygen never sounded this good with instrumentals being panned over the fronts and whooshing around the sidewall surrounds.

I noticed the levels on left and right where mixed quite high with certain parts of music, so little reducing of the master level and slight increase on the centre channel output as well as a few trims on the LF left and right and HF thou not as much as I’d like to maintain transparency of the sounds over the fronts.

This is JBL chest pounded, with shuddering LFE.1, window rattling JBL sensation, which vibrated the seat, like nobody’s business!

SPL db levels where kept within safety limits around +80dbA to +105dbc, if I’d trimmed the LFE.1 differently with 62Hz at 0db the depth at the back of room would be too overwhelming, with peaks close to 115dbc. The master fader is at the -10db level and still I seen the Alesis RA300 going into clip thanks to the DCX2496 and its management safety features.

Chapter 8 has a harmonistic mellow Zen feeling with good percussion of strings, which is backed up by a wonderfully choirs that gives it that heavenly emotion edge. The image on the transfer is remarkable clear for standard DVD.:p

Besides, they've restored "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" a few years back, its a sumptuous film - go rent it or buy it and enjoy again. Its a MAJOR improvement!
Then go get "Once Upon a Time In the West" and see it on a big screen -
Robards, Fonda, Bronson, Cardinale - and Jack Elam with that hilarious opening sequence -

Just got Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson and A Touch of Schmilsson, both re-mastered re-issues. Used to own both LPs back in the 70's, you know with those timeless classics, like Without You and Coconut. Well, they're still great listens now as they were back then, espcially when these re-masterings are just sonically fantastic! Plus they've got bonus tracks that were taken originally with the final tracks, mostly of demo nature, like Nilsson singing Without You with just a piano accompaniment, not to mention Spanish and Italian language versions of that song, or Coconut with just a guitar.

On Re-mastered Re-issues: Over the past couple of years, maybe starting from around the mid-90's, there have been many, many re-issues of 'classic' titles, a welcome trend for those of us who've owned the original LPs and have wanted to hear them again, but couldn't or didn't because either one didn't want to bother with all the idiosyncracies of analog players or the re-issued CDs just sounded like crap. But most of these recent re-issue CDs have been re-mastered with the latest digital mixing equipments, with careful consideration for sonic quality and dynamics.

I've just started to re-collect many of the older 'classic' albums. They just sound fantastic on my JBLs!

The best piano jazz I have ever heard, and excellent recordings to boot. Japanese CD's in this case, the set is eight discs. The absolute master at the peak of his form, one week before he died.

Get out your SET amps for this one. If you think you know Bill Evans and you haven't heard his later work (1970 on), you don't know Bill Evans. This period makes his classic work seem cute by comparison. And these are his greatest recordings of all.

There is another set of these gigs, The Last Waltz. Haven't heard it yet, but can't wait to.

I really like all I've ever heard of Bill Evans, but, unfortunately, nearly $200 for "Consecration" is more than I can spend right now--by "another set of these gigs," do you mean that the same material is available on "The Last Waltz," or that it is other material from the same sessions?

Other material from the same sessions. Consecration is "The final recordings Part 2." The Last Waltz was apparently issued first. Both collections are unique and contain different songs. One collection is the first sets from each of the eight nights; the other is the second sets. I can second the reviews that he didn't repeat himself. Each rendering of each song on any night is different from any other night. This is a real feast.

Try Googling the titles and many reviews will come up. Some are on sale sites. Note that prices go to about ninety dollars. Even better prices may occur on ebay, I don't know.

Some of the material I found is quite touching. For instance, recollections of his sidemen wondering how he mustered the effort to play at all, never mind at the incredible level he did, when he was for most purposes already dead physically. I guess he was determined to make the best of his last opportunities to make music, to move beyond what even he had already accomplished. Most reviews I found declare the work probably the pinnacle of piano trio playing, then or now. I know I've never heard anything even close, except other late work from Mr. Evans himself.
