Found today at my favorite local record shop BRO Records St. Gallen. Something very special. Supergroup with Mick Rogers guitar (Manfred Mann's Earthband), Jack Lancaster sax, keyboards etc.(Blodwyn Pig), Clive Bunker drums (Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig, Steve Hillage) and John G. Perry bass (Caravan).
First class progressive rock with superb vocals. No fillers all winners. In fact it was not the right time for this one in 1979.
English Harvest pressing with superb dynamics.

Stephane Grappelli, violin, is the cat (tracks A7, A10, B3).
This LP shows once again what great drummer Phil Collins was....
United here are all these superb guitar players: Garry (sic!) Moore, John Goodsall, Chris Spedding, Alvin Lee.
Funny progrock gem, based on Russian composer Serge Prokofiev's work.

With such a beautiful booklet as it was usual for seventies' LPs!

Interesting discovery: Alvin Lee duelling with Stephane Grappelli.
Everything was possible in the 70ies, at least musically.
On 1975 album "Peter and the wolf" by Jack Lancaster & Robin Lumley: track A7, Serge Prokofiev's tune "Cat Dance", shows Alvin Lee playing a funny furious duet with Stephane Grappelli.
Nearly unbelievable.

PFM is the italian progrock group Premiata Forneria Marconi.
Recorded live at the Convocation Hall, Toronto University on August 22nd and at the Schaefer Central Park Music Festival, New York on August 31st, 1974.
There was a very interesting progrock scene in Italy in the 70ies.
Here is the possibility to compare a German pressing to a US pressing of this diabolic Italian special menu of snake cooking.

Live recording with German Orchestra Kurt Edelhagen. Edelhagen was the "Jazzprofessor" of the "Staatliche Musikhochschule Köln" 1958-1963.
Hildegard Knef was the "female Sinatra" of Germany.
Big voice-great songs! Spotlight on the selfmade impressive lyrics in swinging compositions.
Listen to track B2 "Die Welt ging unter am Zürichsee bei 30 Grad im Schatten" on this superb pressing.
Don't forget one of the most characteristic German female voices ever: "Das Glück ist eine Frage der Bescheidenheit"......, isn't it?

Cit. notice on back cover: The original "Black charts", the "Harlem Hitparade" in early 1940's developed into the Top 15 of the "Race Records".
On June 17, 1949 a new name was coined: Rhythm And Blues (R&B).
From 1956-1963 Elvis had 28 Songs in it, all together it came to 227 weeks. 4 songs reached number 1.
In 1969 there was another change of name: "Soul Charts".
Listen to track A6 "Reconsider Baby": Boots Randolph plays 2 sax-solos in a row, a praiseworthy exception in Elvis-Songs.
Elvis never forgot the blues.......

Same US Dynaflex pressing as shown here. Minor dynamics. The weight of the vinyl is only 93 gr. That's why most Dynaflex pressings have bumps. Didn't RCA realize this problem? Deadwax inscription: APRS 5984 2S. What about your issue?
Dynaflex vinyl with bumps only for the European market? No, this is Schizophrenia, because European music market wasn't an insignificant market at all, isn't it?????
There ain't no cure for Schizophrenia disease. The Kinks knew it. So listen to track A2 "Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues".

This is the german issue. It was the first LP with original compositions without Graham Nash after "Words and music by Bob Dylan" with Dylan Songs only.
The US version was titled "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" and included the hit single by the same name while omitting tracks B2 "Soldiers Dilemma" and B3 "Marigold/Gloria Swansong".

Estate sale grab this morning. another compilation of pre-ABB material recorded circa 1968 I think. I have the Bold Records 1972 release w/ a Morning Dew cover and an early Melissa, and this is very similar stuff. I like this one, lots of interesting Gregg Allman songs and a really nice cover of a Carole King (ok Goffin-King) song: No Easy Way Down. It looked nice under the dust, and cleaned up great on the VPI 16.5.





Ok! a thrift deal on AR90s should defray costs on alot of those records! I am trying to clear my basement of speaker projects but I would be tempted by those ARs.

...can we expect pictures in the speaker safari thread, and how do you transport speakers on a bike? (would like a picture of that...)

In the 80ies, "The Who" practically didn't exist anymore, but "Golden Earring" still functioned as a band of musicians with emphasis and rocknroll attitude: listen to the "Who"-alike synthesizer on track B4 "Going crazy again"! They still are rocking together.......
In US this LP was titled "Long blond animal". Anybody has an explanation, why they changed the title?

Some (important?) differences: the original 1979 German Chrysalis issue had a totally different track listing: The concert begins with "Natural Thing". 2 songs (added at the start of 2008 Back In Black label reissue) are missing: "Cherry" / "Hot and ready". 2 tracks actually are not live but studio recordings: B1/B2 "Mother Mary"/"This Kid's". Crowd noise was added. Well made live fake, as reported by Producer Ron Nevison on 2008 reissue inner foldcover liner notes. Apropos: very interesting liner notes! Listen also to Thin Lizzy's "Southbound" on "Live and dangerous", which in fact was a soundcheck recording!
Listen to track C1 "Lights out" as Phil Mogg sings at 2:40 "Lights out Chicago!!!" which is followed by audience roar.

​Clearing up the basement?

yes, there is a little spring cleaning but mostly I'm listening on the basement system. Elac Miracord 50H turntable with a Stanton 681EEE cartridge. I've had it for years along with a bunch of Duals, etc which I picked up at yard sales. just using it for some listening in the basement system with Lafayette 250a tube amp, Cambridge Audio 640p phono preamp, and big Frazier movie theater speakers.

It's #169 on Rolling Stone mags 500 all time greatest.

Today I ran across a GORDY labeled Temps "One Direction" and I'll be darned it was there, all 12m05s* of it. To my consternation , it had set in a wet basement somewhere and the jacket was waterlogged/moldy. The vinyl looked OK under the powdered mold.
Gave it a try ... then cleaned off at home and it plays perfectly :applaud: . I of course have a digi version, but the vinyl lets me hear things that I can't on my MP3 copies.

I tossed the jacket and will find another to hold it. Sometimes a gamble pays off.

*label says 11m45s , but I timed it in at 12:05

No, in fact it's a stereo release. Nobody noticed? On back cover is printed "V-4036". Deadwax inscription and label print: "V6 4036". Front cover "MG VS 64036".
No matter, it's Ella at the peak of her powers in 1959.
About 15 years later i had the chance to visit 2 of her Kongresshaus Zürich concerts. Unforgettable!

It was the first time she had sung the song, and not knowing the lyrics so well, she substituted her own in a fantastic style! She mentions Bobby Darin's and Louis Armstrong's perfect versions of this song and then she improvises in the vocal style of Louis Armstrong.....

Victoria is Victoria Domagalski. She is a very beautiful woman with a wonderful voice as we may see on cover photo. And she was a fantastic cook (notice on inner fold cover by Richard Brautigan).
She made only 2 albums and then she was lost but not found anymore. Anybody knows more about this singer?
I found this one yesterday in "Klang und Kleid" record store, St. Gallen.
I especially bought this one because of the credits to Herbie Hancock who played piano.

Listen to the short jazz guitar solo on track B3 "I'm the face" (first record release 1964 by The Who as The High Numbers) and look at the notice by Pete Townshend on lyric sheet: "Superb jazz guitar solo from somebody i don't recognize.......".

Notice on back cover: "With the exception of Repent Walpurgis for which Matthew Fisher may be held responsible all the music was written by Gary Brooker and the words by Keith Reid". Since the famous law-suite in 2005 Matthew Fisher owns 40% of the credits of
"A whiter shade of pale"!! The room was humming harder and the ceiling flew away......

In the 70ies mostly separated out into the dust bins with mistreated cut out gimmix cover: underrated because of the dominance of Robin Trower's Gibson Les Paul guitar and the absence of the organ of Matthew Fisher. This one was not the classical "Whiter shade of pale"-sound anymore. Also for me it was a huge disappointment then.
But from the view of today it's very interesting because that one was Trower's goodbye to Procol Harum and his change to Fender Stratocaster with Hendrix touch.
So let's listen to "Song for a dreamer" track B2: his tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

1973 US stereo reissue. Good dynamics. Listen to track A1 "Split kick": what a majestic introduction by the ebullient voice of Pee-Wee Marquette, the club's emcee-mascot.
Soon after this recording Clifford Brown died June 27, 1956, in an automobile accident.
Great piano playing by Horace silver at the jazz corner of the world.


This is vol.2, hot stuff.
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, February 21,1954, an engineer who understands jazz and knows how to balance it. (Notice on back cover in the liner notes by Leonard Feather).
Very good mono US pressing. Deadwax inscription RVG and the "ear" (for Plastylite) on both sides. Deep grooved labels with address
161 Lexington Ave on A side /47 West 63rd on B-side. A rare one in this formidable condition.

Something very special, a curious discovery from thrift store last month. Cult female vocal group arranged and conducted by George Duke with George Duke Trio. Produced by Hans Georg Brunner Schwer in Villingen, Germany in 1969/70. And it's definitively a cult album in Germany.
Scarce German 1999 reissue with great dynamics.
Originally released at MPS.
Includes superb versions of "Maiden Voyage", "Cantaloupe Island", "Got to get you into my life" and "Eleanor Rigby".
Turn this one and listen once again!

42 years since then, but this one sounds fresh and clear like a little mountain creek in springtime in the morning. No, this is definitively not fusion jazz, as noticed in most critiques. It's funky Latin-BeBop! What a genious sax played by David Sanborn. So many thrilling rhythms here!
Produced with superb dynamics by Creed Taylor, recorded at Rudy Van Gelder in March, 1975. Good England pressing by James Upton Ltd.

yes, good question. There is no indication of the country on the cover either. I did some internet research a few years ago. I didn't make any notes but it was probably the catalog number that pointed me to a german pressing.
