Found today at my favorite local record shop BRO Records St. Gallen. Something very special. Supergroup with Mick Rogers guitar (Manfred Mann's Earthband), Jack Lancaster sax, keyboards etc.(Blodwyn Pig), Clive Bunker drums (Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig, Steve Hillage) and John G. Perry bass (Caravan).
First class progressive rock with superb vocals. No fillers all winners. In fact it was not the right time for this one in 1979.
English Harvest pressing with superb dynamics.
A lost gem, thanx to Alex!

Concerning my last post "Aviator":
Let's take a trip to mars with Jack Lancaster (Blodwyn Pig, Mick Abrahams Band), Robin Lumley (Brand X, Rod Argent, Anthony Phillips).
Powerful drumming by Phil Collins. Fine guitar work by John Goodsall (Brand X, Atomic Rooster).
An epic work. A forgotten progrock gem.
Listen to track A6 "Olympus Mons" with notice on back cover: "One of the largest volcanoes on mars "Olympus Mons" is 25 kilometers high.....

Great animalistic fun at Trident Studios, London.
Stephane Grappelli, violin, is the cat (tracks A7, A10, B3).
This LP shows once again what great drummer Phil Collins was....
United here are all these superb guitar players: Garry (sic!) Moore, John Goodsall, Chris Spedding, Alvin Lee.
Funny progrock gem, based on Russian composer Serge Prokofiev's work.
Listen to Gary Moore on track B8 playing crybabywahwah-pedal-guitar in Prokofiev tune "Duck Escape".
With such a beautiful booklet as it was usual for seventies' LPs!

Interesting discovery: Alvin Lee duelling with Stephane Grappelli.
Everything was possible in the 70ies, at least musically.
On 1975 album "Peter and the wolf" by Jack Lancaster & Robin Lumley: track A7, Serge Prokofiev's tune "Cat Dance", shows Alvin Lee playing a funny furious duet with Stephane Grappelli.
Nearly unbelievable.

Big fun down in the jungle room. Recorded February 2-8 1976/October 29-30 1976 by RCA Mobile Unit at Graceland.
Fine guitars by James Burton et al. and a great warm ripe and........... unique voice.
Superb mastering of newly mixed outtakes.
Superb dynamics on these two 140gr vinyl pressings.

In reviewing this release, Mark Allan, of Allmusic, commented that "One of the many sad secrets of the popular music business is the way this little gem languished in obscurity. It should have been heard by millions, but disappeared at the height of psychedelia. Two years later, The Band found an audience with haunting tales of bygone rustic North American life with their seminal, self-titled second album. Widespread acclaim eluded the earlier outing by this unheralded Canadian trio. The songs, most written independently by Daisy DeBolt or Allan Fraser, are poetic."[2]

The funniest tracks are "O'Reilly at the bar" and "Skippy's farewell". In a world where mediocrity is rampant, Dan Hicks has style. And of course there are the constantly cruising "Lickettes", what a name, too much! (Cit: Ben Sidran on back cover notice).

On June 17, 1949 a new name was coined: Rhythm And Blues (R&B).

Crow was a Minneapolis hard rock-based blues rock band, active from 1967-1972. interesting extended jams, one of the songs on side 1 includes a few chords from Jailhouse Rock. Evil Woman and "Cottage Cheese" are highlights, some prominent organ and bass playing on the latter. an interesting note on wiki:

Guitar by Tony Mottola. Big dominating orchestra for melancholic Frank, because it was his last album for Reprise, the record label he had founded in 1960. So at last resulted these slow melancholy songs. That's why we nearly cannot hear any guitar chords by Tony Mottola.

Estate sale grab this morning. another compilation of pre-ABB material recorded circa 1968 I think. I have the Bold Records 1972 release w/ a Morning Dew cover and an early Melissa, and this is very similar stuff. I like this one, lots of interesting Gregg Allman songs and a really nice cover of a Carole King (ok Goffin-King) song: No Easy Way Down. It looked nice under the dust, and cleaned up great on the VPI 16.5.

2008 live reissue. 2LPs on 180gr vinyl.
Great Flying-V Gibson guitar work by German Michael Schenker, younger brother of Scorpions guitarist Rudolf Schenker.

Some (important?) differences: the original 1979 German Chrysalis issue had a totally different track listing: The concert begins with "Natural Thing". 2 songs (added at the start of 2008 Back In Black label reissue) are missing: "Cherry" / "Hot and ready". 2 tracks actually are not live but studio recordings: B1/B2 "Mother Mary"/"This Kid's". Crowd noise was added. Well made live fake, as reported by Producer Ron Nevison on 2008 reissue inner foldcover liner notes. Apropos: very interesting liner notes! Listen also to Thin Lizzy's "Southbound" on "Live and dangerous", which in fact was a soundcheck recording!
Listen to track C1 "Lights out" as Phil Mogg sings at 2:40 "Lights out Chicago!!!" which is followed by audience roar.

One of the greatest live rock albums of all time, isn't it?

Toni Vescoli was "leader" of the Swiss Beatles "Les Sauterelles" in the 60ies.
Les Sauterelles still are on the road in these days (yesterday in St. Gallen, Klang&Kleid).
This original issue is a very rare Swiss CBS pressing. A calm one in Dylan/Byrds style.
Anybody knows who played bass guitar and drums? "Information" has only very spare information on black&white art foldcover.
Listen to the psychedelic version of Swiss national anthem (old version) on track B5 "Do Hurry".
A real Swiss psychedelic folk-rock gem!

Clearing up the basement?

yes, there is a little spring cleaning but mostly I'm listening on the basement system. Elac Miracord 50H turntable with a Stanton 681EEE cartridge. I've had it for years along with a bunch of Duals, etc which I picked up at yard sales. just using it for some listening in the basement system with Lafayette 250a tube amp, Cambridge Audio 640p phono preamp, and big Frazier movie theater speakers.

for many years, one of the faves that always gets loaded to the POD is
The Temptations "Papa was a rolling stone" ... they made lots of hits but
I considered it their best. Every time I grab one of their albums (GH, Masterpiece , etc.) it's never on there.

reviews:
http://www.allmusic.com/song/papa-was-a-rollin-stone-mt0014048022
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papa_Was_a_Rollin'_Stone
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/the-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-20110407/the-temptations-papa-was-a-rollin-stone-20110526

It's #169 on Rolling Stone mags 500 all time greatest.

Today I ran across a GORDY labeled Temps "One Direction" and I'll be darned it was there, all 12m05s* of it. To my consternation , it had set in a wet basement somewhere and the jacket was waterlogged/moldy. The vinyl looked OK under the powdered mold.
Gave it a try ... then cleaned off at home and it plays perfectly :applaud: . I of course have a digi version, but the vinyl lets me hear things that I can't on my MP3 copies.

I tossed the jacket and will find another to hold it. Sometimes a gamble pays off.

*label says 11m45s , but I timed it in at 12:05

colors were hard to photo, but here's a poor one.

EXTRA BITS: The song was parodied by comedian Bob Rivers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Rivers) in 1994 on Twisted Tunes: 1994 The Year in Review as "Grandpa Loved the Rolling Stones".
The song, the anchor of the 1972 Temptations album All Directions, won three 1973 Grammys:
"Possibly the greatest Temptations record of all time, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" combined so many musical elements so well that it could be described as the group's own "Good Vibrations." A brilliant, dark bass and drum pattern sets the menacing tone to the rhythm, and is spiced elegantly by a jazzy trumpet, giving the song a slightly free-form air. On top of this, some steely orchestration adds yet another layer of darkness, making this one of the "blackest" Top Ten records of its time." (Allmusic link)

It took a while, but I finally found a clean copy of this , and in a $1 bin no less. :bouncy:

In the 70ies mostly separated out into the dust bins with mistreated cut out gimmix cover: underrated because of the dominance of Robin Trower's Gibson Les Paul guitar and the absence of the organ of Matthew Fisher. This one was not the classical "Whiter shade of pale"-sound anymore. Also for me it was a huge disappointment then.
But from the view of today it's very interesting because that one was Trower's goodbye to Procol Harum and his change to Fender Stratocaster with Hendrix touch.
So let's listen to "Song for a dreamer" track B2: his tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

1973 US stereo reissue. Good dynamics. Listen to track A1 "Split kick": what a majestic introduction by the ebullient voice of Pee-Wee Marquette, the club's emcee-mascot.
Soon after this recording Clifford Brown died June 27, 1956, in an automobile accident.
Great piano playing by Horace silver at the jazz corner of the world.

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, February 21,1954, an engineer who understands jazz and knows how to balance it. (Notice on back cover in the liner notes by Leonard Feather).

Look at the miraculous front cover painting by Mati Klarwein (Bitches Brew/Abraxas).
Listen to the highlight, track B3 "Brothers and others". And listen once again. And again.....

Mick Ronson guitar, production.
Mick Jones guitar, production.
You have to grab this one. Immediately. At any price!
Life is too short to let this one pass away in the dust bin of the thrift store.
Ellen Foley vocals. She was a very significant singer!
Ian Hunter still rocks in these days........36 years since this one.
Listen to track A4 "Old records never die".

Astonishing discovery: Elton John sings the solo parts as member of no name vocal production session group "The Tramps". Probably Reginald Dwight also played the piano parts (B2)
A2 Love grows
A3 Come and get it
A6 Ma belle amie (Listen to this beautiful Elton John version on YouTube)
B2 Bridge over troubled water (with big problems while singing the high tunes at the end)
B3 Let's work together (same rocking style as in "Crocodile rock")
B5 August October (Bee Gees)
P.S.: A4 Jingle Jangle is interpreted by "Lulu"!
Look at the front cover foto: this person seems to be David Byron, who also contributed hundreds of vocal versions on those "No name" productions, mostly created in Pye Studios!
A cheapo with huge value. Look for it in the dust bins at the flea markets!

Listen to the beautiful version of Steve Earle's "My old friend the blues" track B5.
Is there anybody left who still uses MCs? I still have hundreds of them in the attic since 30 years.

A little light music for this hot summer evening.
I remember summer 1985: a hot one.
Julie Roberts voc, Simon Booth g, Larry Stabbins sax&flute.
Strong horn and string arrangements.
No synthies! Listen to A1 Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues"
Hot tracks for cool cats.....

British studio psych project, reminds me of Colosseum. The flights from guitar and piano/organ are anchord by a nice prominent bass from "Jackson Primrose" - credits must be made-up for contractual reasons. a thrift store find from 6 years ago.

Irish traditional folk music. Remember all those summer openair festivals in the 70ies in ancient locations.
Commercial success was not the main aspect then. Funny times........

This is not the "Sugar Baby Love"-thing anymore. Unexpected. Matured songwriting, great harmony vocals and many different influences.
The Rubettes were a disco/dancing floor orientated group. But on this one we may meet the Beatles, CSN&Y, folk influences.....
Produced by Tremeloes' Alan Blakely.
Notice on lyrics-sheet: "And Alan....Surprise surprise, this didn't make the playlist either."
