2003 digitally remastered 180gr vinyl EU reissue. Superb dynamics. Listen to the accoustic guitar on track A3 "As tears go by". Booklet with many pictures of the young Stones. American track listing. Brian Jones (not satisfied by his playing results?) with a Rickenbacker 12 string on inner Booklet. Jack Nitzsche percussion and keyboard. Phil Spector percussion (??!!??) Yesss: the front cover for the American release was used for the rear foto on the UK edition.

a really nice sounding set or sets of early 60s hard bop

back after a week away from the turntable while I was getting some desert sun and some hiking near Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park. We had a great time scrambling and exploring canyons and caves with a guide on the first day, then more of the same on our own.
No rattlesnakes but we had some excitement when we noticed a large tarantula on the trail.

Along came a spider. Was it Boris or Alice? This one is a german pressing with perfect dynamics. Transparent 180gr vinyl. Luxurious cover art as Alice always did in the seventies. Slash plays lead guitar on track A2 "Vengeance is mine". Oh i like Alice Cooper. Welcome to my nightmare: i hate spiders.....

this label kinda jumped out and condition looked great , it's only about 50 cents
so I took it just for "play value"

DAMN :) that may be the best I've ever heard early Stones sound. Easily beats
the CD of same title. :) :) :)

Musicians with cowboy hats: they sell these country records in my favorite record shop BRO Records for 2 SFr. these days. Nobody wants to buy these bad sellers in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Nobody but me. Track B4: "What did you expect me to do"......... But hey, look at that list of famous Nashville studio cracks: Hank DeVito steel guitar, Reggie Young guitar!!! We don't have Cowboys and Honky Tonks in Europe. We don't have Juke Boxes anymore....

Country rock guitar playing on the highest level. This one is very interesting because of these famous Nashville studio cracks: listen to the guitar playing of Reggie Young, Billy Walker, Wayne Turner and Richard Bennett. A2 "Honky Tonk Women" in a softer version without any stones on the road.

Unfortunately this one is not the original issue, which is very sought after. Swiss reissue 2016. Good pressing with perfect dynamics. Memories of my youth, when i didn't have the money to buy it. So i recorded it from my transistor radio to my tape deck, when it was broadcasted by german radio station SWF3. Buying the original record would have been a valuable investment!!!

I bought this one because of the Mickey Jupp song on track B1 "Tears for you". The seeming twin girls on front cover are mother and daughter! They were very successful with their records. But why did they have to work in the coal mine (Allen Toussaint track A3)? It was a gold mine........Good US pressing.

Unpleasant one. I don't understand Monk's strange kind of piano playing. And the orchestra, conducted by Oliver Nelson, sucks at all: so many "wrong" tunes.....P.S.:in my youth i exercised violin playing nearly for 10 years. Not very successfully indeed. I was not allowed to play any wrong tunes! The teachers hit me with their violin bows! I knew, that it's better to stop playing my part in the orchestra, if i couldn't get the right tune. Listen to the inaccurate orchestra tunes at the end of most tracks, especially on track A4
"Just a glance at love" and the totally wrong tunes by the horns at the end of track A5. Teo Macero didn't check it?
I put this one on the turntable, because i hoped to find some of Howard Robert's dirty guitar playing tunes. He has no credits on back cover lyrics. He is hardly existent on track A1 and track B3 with some nice comping. But hey, i can hear the typical Fender bass playing by Carole Kaye on track B1 "Consecutive seconds". But there is no dirty guitar playing at all....

Highly recommended. No fillers all winners. A great DISCovery. Listen to the wonderful song on track A3 "The power of love". And track A5 "Find another fool" is simply a masterwork of composition and playing. Listen to the empathic guitar work of Stephen Bruton and Derek O'Brien. Is anybody able to explain the meaning of the word "gatorhythms"? Do they have alligators in Austin? 12 SFR. last week in my favorite record shop were not too much money for this find! I have to look for further gatorhythm-music of Marcia Ball....

HNY 2016 everyone. I heard the title track playing last night at a post-hike stop for beers and food with my group, they were playing a bunch of great 70's stuff (Maggie May, Kashmir) of what I was able to pick out above the crowd [Issaquah Brewhouse]. This one is a much loved, many-times-played LP that I purchased in the mid 70s, sounds great.

He did alot of session work and I'm sure he associated with the WC musicians but don't think he was a regular as Tommy Tedesco was the main guitar guy - with Glen Campbell as well. There's a great new documentary film The Wrecking Crew - put together by Tommy T's son as a tribute to his dad, highly recommended - Delta was showing it in their in-flight rotation last month.

Nice, terrific sonics, very hot and dynamic. Emitt Rhodes band includes guys who played on the Gene Clark & The Gosdin Brothers LP, and The Leaves. Time Will Show The Wiser - I'm familiar with it from Fairport Convention's first album. I didn't know it was written by Emitt Rhodes.

This is a surprising thrift store find last week. the Pay n' Save price tag was from a local retail drug store chain which was founded in 1940 and folded in the early 80s.

Concerning the disappointing dynamics: do you hear some hi hats or cymbals of the drumming work on title track? I don't. Only the guitar tunes are more or less clear. Is it because of the pressing or the recording conditions? How is your US pressing? Somewhat boring song material, isn't it? This is a good example of minor producer efforts. Look at the pictures on back cover: depressive consternation all around because of too annoying studio conditions? Hey, Christine, show me a smile! Track B4.

What a lucky man you are having found this Merry-go-round LP. How was the condition? The third Solo LP of Emitt Rhodes is a diamond. And it makes you smile, because it's one of the first Beatles LP's that was not made by the Beatles. It's the best Paul McCartney solo record ever, that was not made by Paul McCartney. Look at the pictures on inner fold cover: Emitt Rhodes recorded at home and played all instruments by himself as Paul did on his first solo LP. He plays a well known bass guitar model from germany as Paul mostly did. Impressive song writing and big music fun. A tragedy: Rhodes is totally unknown in Europe until today. What about US? Listen for example to the diverse song on track B3 "Bubble gum the blues/I'm a cruiser": it's not only some kind of usual Merry-go-round......

This one was the first solo LP by Emitt Rhodes: listen to the wonderful song on track A3 " She's such a beauty": surely a 100% number 1 hit in the charts, if it would have been recorded by Paul McCartney.......It's a tragedy: nobody noticed..... Nobody? No, there's a little town in Switzerland where some interested vinyl freak found this one in a thrift store in the nineties for 4 SFr..... Look at the back cover picture and notice: if you leave your appartement, be sure to keep your Gibson ES 335 always at your side!!!! Don't leave it at home. Luckily there only was one volume knob missed in action......

Yeah I love it when those rare records turn up in great condition. It's often a tragic discovery when the record is trashed. The Merry Go Round LP's cover is still in shrink wrap and the record looks NM- and played a strong VG++. It was $1 US.

Its cool you have that Rhodes solo LP. I have that one and his other early solo LP. I agree with the McCartney comparisons. What a talent.

Yes, disappointing dynamics especially on Show Me A Smile (love those Christine songs) and the Bob Welch title track where you want the big sound of the later Fleetwood Mac albums ...but it actually works for me with the subtle moodiness of the Danny Kirwan songs - example Woman Of A Thousand Dreams

This is the original italian issue. Good dynamics and pressing. Come together: Listen to the buttersoft intro of the drums with the "sshhhht"! One of the most magical moments of music all over many music centuries!!!! Did Ringo Starr know what kind of magical drums he played then? The magician was George Martin!

This is the same english issue as you have. YEX 749/750 is a very good pressing. You're right! Listen to the crickets in the intro of "Sun king". If you may hear the crickets clear and naturally as on a summer evening, so you may be sure, it's a superb pressing! Listen also to the clear drums on track "She came in through the bathroom window". Simply fantastic! Don't forget Ringo. He was great: he kept it simple, so it was the best.....

180gr Vinyl. EU pressing from ??????? (Country not known, possibly Germany). Disappointing dynamics. First i thought, that the pickup of my Reson Rota turntable has reached his final stage. So i mounted a new pickup. With the same result: disappointing dynamics. Has anybody also made the same bitter lesson of experience with this record? If you have to pay 35 SFr. (as I did today), so don't! It's too expensive. Buy the CD! Included in this LP Cover is a voucher for digital download. Has anybody made already a comparison between digital and vinyl issue of this LP?

A crazy one. This is my vinyl issue of "Grand Wazoo". Good english Kinney pressing. I was 17 years old, when i bought this LP from a dust bin sale at my local record shop BRO Records in St. Gallen. Iwas not able to listen to the whole LP in one go, because this LP was too much for me: what the hell is thaaaaaat? So i had to store it in the attic for later purpose for many years. For in those days, I loved the records of Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull etc.. And today? Still i think: what the hell is that? This is not my piece of cake also today. I don't understand the strangekind of humour in this record. It's a totally crazy story and music. But there were very famous musicians involved in this one: look at the picture below. File under "Crazy Jazz"......

Look at the magical mystery cover art by Mati Klarwein. This the great thing about vinyl cult only!!! Klarwein is also famous for the second Santana cult record "Abraxas". The magician was Miles Davis, but the mastermind of jazzrockfusion was John McLaughlin. Look at the list of famous musicians on the inner foldcover. Does anybody know further fancy LP cover art work of Mati Klarwein?

Big cinema for your ears. In Europe, this non LP singles collection was not called "Hey Jude", but "The Beatles Again". Unconventional and innovative bass playing on every track especially on "Rain", "Old brown shoe" and "Don't let me down". Superb french pressing with very good dynamics. Nicky Hopkins piano on "Revolution". Ronnie Scott sax on "Lady Madonna". Billy Preston organ on "Old brown shoe" and wonderful electric piano on "Don't let me down". "The ballad of John and Yoko" was recorded only by Lennon/McCartney without Harrison and Ringo. Listen to "Can't buy me love" and compare it with Count Basie's "Swinging the blues". It's the same blues song.......

"Can't buy me love" is a rip-off from Count Basie's "Swinging the blues" on track B6 of this french double album. Nobody ever noticed that.

This one is a fine and affectionate vinyl collection about the BBC broadcast recordings of 1962 until 1965 by the magical mystery four. They had much fun while playing live. Listen especially to the guitar playing by George and John on their Rickenbacker guitars! Mono recordings. Perfect pressings.

Hi Fritz, It's not a gatefold cover. Good sound quality, yes very light weight vinyl but many of these US dynaflex pressings have really great sonics in my experience - the Bowie Hunky Dory title, for example.

Concerning my last post. Interesting rough and muddy live version of "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" on this soundtrack. Track B1. Recorded and shot at Studio One, Wembley, July 1, 1965 for TV programme "Ready Steady Go". You may look at it on Youtube. This is the only clip of the movie which has an overdub. The original had very low bass. So in 1978 John Entwistle got the bass model on which he is seen playing in the film and recorded a new bass line, then blended it in seamlessly. Does anybody know which bass model he used then?
Good german pressing. 36 years old vinyl in mint condition.

Concerning my last post "Who's better, Who's best": is it possible to cover a song of The Who? No go? IMHO there are only a few cover versions that are acceptable. Does anybody know a Who song cover version that's superior to the original? This one is an example of how you should not cover a Who song. It's a shame, so don't listen to track A4 "I can see for miles". And forget Tina Turner's embarrassing version of Led Zeppelins "Whole lotta love" on track A5! This was simply a poor one by Tina Turner........

Cover version of The Who song "I can't explain": not bad, but does it make sense to have a cover of this song by the Scorpions? This track was a 45rpm single release. Perfect guitar work. Too perfect. Sterile. But the version of David Bowie's "Pin Up" LP was the perfect cover of this song because of the typically striking guitar work of Mick Ronson. See my post of 15. Januar 2016. Finally, the original was a powerful sign of those times and places........

Poor Yvonne: she has to eat this green gelatine food. Food of Love? This is IMHO the second best cover version of "I can's explain"after the Bowie version on "Pin Up", because of the extraordinaire voice of Elliman and the guitar of Pete Townshend himself. She was the voice behind Eric Clapton's band. Mick Grabham of Procol Harum guitar. John Gustafson bass. Mike Giles drums. Produced by Rupert Hine.

Yes. A big one, though Kossoff was not member of Free anymore at this time. He only played on tracks A2,3,4 and B2,4. The top hit "Wishing well" was with Paul Rodgers on guitar. Who is Snuffy, who plays guitar on B3?

Did you know? He did his vocal exercises for little pocket money. Who is the male singer? Remember Uriah Heep: yes it's David Byron. He was one of the vocal chamaeleon artists for vocal productions in Pye Studios. No matter they wanted, he did every song. Interesting versions of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Race with the devil", "Something's happening". He covered nearly any singer at this time. Mono, superb pressing.

Pye Studios 1969: David Byron did (nearly) everything they wanted him to sing. Vocal production with contributions by David Byron: Listen to "Dizzy", "Ragamuffin Man" and especially to the Fleetwood Mac song "Man of the world". That's fun.

Chamäleon voice. He sings everything: "Let it be" as vocal production by David Byron. Respect! What a variable voice : he also covered John Lennon's vocals in "Instant Karma". There's more warmth in his timbre as Lennon had. What a golden voice: Listen to "By the way". He also sang a cover of the Canned Heat title "Let's work together". And he did it well.....

This is David Byrons vocal production masterwork. Great interpretations of "Something", "Yester-me, yester-you, yesterday". At this time his voice was on top. He was fit to take off with Uriah Heep. He had exercised sufficiently. Listen to "Cold Turkey"! What a challenge to cover this song.....

It's well known today, that especially David Byron (Uriah Heep), Elton John, David Bowie, Long John Baldry, Dana et al. were involved in such kind of recordings for easy pocket money. Imagine: The Rolling Stones have lost their Jumping Jack at the microphone. So David Byron took his part. No, it's only fantasy. But on this one we may listen to David Byron covering "Honky Tonk Women". He also recorded a swinging version of "Bad Moon Rising". He also contributes his voice to the Humble Pie song "Natural Born Bugie". But now: listen to "Curly": is it true? Yes, it's David Bowie, opening the song and singing the interlude. It's a little sensation: David Bowie is singing duet together with David Byron. Look at the beautiful Hagström guitar on front cover.

The Clive Allen Orchestra is a fantasy name for a bunch of some unknown studio musicians, who later became more or less famous. On most songs, the voice of David Byron may be listened to. On this one we have interesting versions of the Move song "Blackberry Way", "Something's happening", and a dramatic version of "Race with devil". It's simply fun!

On this vocal production we may listen to Lulu singing to another version of her world hit "Boom bang a bang" and "Come back and shake me". Joe South's "Games people play" and a powerful version of "Pinball Wizzard" sung both by David Byron. IMHO: one of the best cover versions of a WHO song! Listen also to the dramatic moony drums.

The voices more softer and in lower key were contributed by Long John Baldry: as example on Barry Ryan song "Eloise". These young inexperienced musicians had the posibility to benefit from the perfect studio conditions at Pye Studios.

Beautiful cover artwork. Music and art go together on this one! No winter picture on the front cover because it's a magical sleigh ride: what a beautiful powerful title song! The term "Nantucket Sleighride" was coined by the whalers to explain what happened after they harpooned a whale. The first harpoon was not intended to kill the whale but only to attach it to the whale boat...."Tired angels" is dedicated to Jimi Hendrix. What a huge "Nantucket Sleighride" this man did!

I think I have or have seen these types of productions, not specifically Vocal Productions - I can't recall if they were US or EUR issues. Sounds like there are some hidden gems and fun novelties - Bowie vocals? wow. There were lots of muzak-type instrumental jazz covers of contemporary hits in the US in the late 60s and 70s - Tony Mottola, etc, I think Wrecking Crew members may have played on a few of these.

Today we have to notice how important the keyboard work of Felix Pappalardi was. Listen to the beautiful track A2 "Long Red". Felix Pappalardi was the mastermind of Mountain: what a superb producer. This US pressing is disappointing. No dynamics. Does anybody own a good pressing of this one?

Ok - sorry if this is too much information: Speakerlab was a HiFi outfit started in Seattle in 1971 by a Boeing engineer, selling kits and fully assembled speakers. They designed many of their drivers & speakers but also leveraged a lot of existing designs such as the Klipschorn. It was a very affordable way to get in to audio, and they had a trade-in program - so I started out with their speaker kits in high school in the early 70s and worked my way through the product line. Great memories, especially hanging out in the listening room at their store.

After that there were the cassette tape decks. Some of this equipment still remains somewhere in the attic. I fear, those drive rubberbands may be rotten during the last 30 years......Led Zep 2 was a vulcano eruption. We used to dance to "Whole lotta love" at many saturday evening parties. Funny times then.....But today there is an overkill of Led Zeppelin reissues, remastering and recovering of curious lost tracks in the last two years. There are no surprising tracks to recover anymore. Robert Plant knows....Jimmy Page was a great innovative guitar player in the seventies. But in the last years he was the "master of hypes". Commercial overkill IMHO. But young people look at this the other way. See my next post concerning the new reissues of Led Zep LPs on CD.

Remastered plus unreleased studio outtakes. Don't expect too much. There's a booklet with some fine pictures but (typically for Jimmy Page) with a minimum of informations. And it's always the same old story with the booklet texts: you need a electron microscope to be able to read it!
The companion CD contains a version of "Whole lotta love" with Robert Plant's voice experiences. What shall we expect from a backing track of "Thank you" and "Living loving maid" without Robert Plant's vocals? Its only a bone without any meat left on it. It's a soup without any salt in it. It's only a selection of work in progress.
Concerning the remastered original LP on CD1: Eddie Kramer did a good job in 1969, so I like the sound of my vinyl LPs......

There are only some bare bones left of the dinner. The magic has gone. It's high time for Jimmy Page to go to the studio with some young fresh musicians.

Interesting because of the fantastic live recording of the concert at Olympia, Paris, October 10, 1969. It was first broadcast on French radio, November 2, 1969 on Europe 1 (musicorama program). They were fresh and young. Sorry Robert, your sirene voice was a little nuance too high...... (En 1969 les francais aimaient les chansons de Jacques Brel, Johnny Halliday, Serge Gainsbourg (!!!) and Gilbert Becaud. Ils tous chantent avec des voix tres bas).

The alternate mix of killer song "Immigrant song" doesn't bring any revolutionary knowledge or expansion of consciousness to anybody in the whole world. Let's leave this song in the original form as it was meant to be in 1970! We should not turn every stone. Interesting guitar work on "Jennings farm blues" but without any vocals. "Key to the highway" was too uncommercial for 1970: fine acoustic guitar work. But the sirene voice of Robert Plant didn't fit together with this traditional blues song of Big Bill Broonzy.

Don't expect too much from the companion disc. The booklet brings a minimum of informations in dwarf writing. Jimmy Page is a minimalist. This would have been the best possibility to immortalise this monument of music work. But obviously everything is said about this one......There is no more meat at the bone. Put your vinyl original or reissue on the turntable and enjoy! What do you think about this companion disc?

What a shame: 3 years later Groove Holmes prefered to play synthesizer. So he produced cheap easy listening music and disco junk. Though he had the best studio musicians at his side on this one: especially all the studio cracks from "Stuff" plus John Faddis.
Only one track is acceptable: track A4 "Non kulu leku" with swinging hammond organ playing. Track B4 Ellingtons "Caravan" is simply unbearable.

Also my wife loves this one because of track B6, the Leiber/Stoller hit "Lucky lips". We knew it in the sixties in german as "Rote Lippen soll man küssen": also Cliff Richard had lucky lips and voice. Ruth Brown not only had lucky lips: she also had a great voice....She died 2006 in Las Vegas. Good Denmark pressing.

I don't think any labels are selling reel to reel recordings now. It was never a big market but reel to reel decks were popular with lots of HiFi enthusiasts in the 60s and 70s - for good reason. The sound quality of an original source 7.5 IPS tape on a good deck can be as good as it gets.

Here’s to us, and those like us… damn few left…

We knew yesterday that Paul had suffered a grievous heart attack and probably
wasn’t going to make it. We all hoped for better news, but it just wasn’t to
be.

Paul and I were old friends. Bob Kinzie introduced me to him when I was in
Santa Clara in ‘62. Our commonality was always the music and whatever it took to
make it happen. We all played the same little dusty, smoky rooms… struggled to
be heard over the hiss of espresso machines… and loved every moment of it. When
Paul enticed me into joining what would become Jefferson Airplane, we rehearsed
relentlessly. When we went on the road in the beginning we couch surfed
together. No one could afford hotels. We shared food… we shared cars… we had one
heart.

The Airplane was an amazing aggregate of personalities and talent. That we
could all coexist in the same room was amazing. That we could function together
and make the lasting art that we did was nothing short of a miracle. In my
opinion Paul was the catalyst that made the alchemy happen. He held our feet to
the flame. He could be argumentative and contentious… he could be loving and
kind… his dedication to the Airplane’s destiny as he saw it was undeniable. Over
the years he and I occasionally butted heads over things that seem trivial
today. I was so pleased last year when he accepted my dinner invitation when I
was in San Francisco and indeed we rediscovered our friendship.

After all those journeys together in the beginning… the different paths our
lives took as we got older and all the water under the bridge made us all one in
a way that no one who wasn’t there could ever understand. We shared water from
the same well. In Heinlein parlance, we were indeed water brothers. We were all
on fire in a fiery time. Time may have dimmed the flame but the fire in the sky
that was so easy to see in youth, is still discernible from the grey castle if
you know where to look. I will try to keep my eyes open.

Friends are always good… you can’t have too many of them. That said, the old
ones share that wondrous gift of knowing you when you were young. You can’t buy
that.

I will miss your presence on this plane…

Ride free to the end of the earth my old friend… I will not forget you!

Anybody knows? Good german reissue pressing. Harvest was a cult label then. You may buy every LP with this label if in good condition. Thrift store find today for 6 SFr. The church bell of "Summer soldier" is a strong sign of life as it was on "Mother" by John Lennon. For whom the bell tolls......

It's a big disaster how Gary Moore lost his Peter Green Les Paul Gibson guitar........

Producer Peter Hauke is synonym for first quality german rock music. He discovered this fantastic US female voice for this german production. Bass and keyboards Tony Carey: that's why there's too much synthies on this one. Don't listen to such disco style tracks as A3 "When a man loves a woman". Justine Johns a.k.a. Deborah Williams teaches singing and lives in Nashville: an interesting strong voice nearly unknown.

I enjoyed her vocals, they suited her strong personality and songwriting. as a woman she transcended a lot of bull__ with her songs and singing. I think her harmonies with Kantner and Balin were sublime ...and so were her looks!

Yes, I prefer the Mono because unfortunately it seems they produced this with a lot of reverb which really seems to thin out the sound. Kind of tragic that so much incredible music - also Buffalo Springfield, Byrds - suffer from thin production.

The grooves are fine on that copy inspite of the mistreatment, and the record plays VG++.

Those haunting vocals on Comin' Back To Me are Marty Balin, sounds like. He sang most of his songs. I imagine walking through SF golden gate park on a foggy winter day for this track and a few others on this album.

French reissue 1984. DMM Direct Metal Mastering. Look at the list of those famous musicians on the cover which is reduced to the max. They had great fun in playing these 5 fine tracks. Listen to the accoustic bass of Sam Jones: you may hear every snaring of the strings. And the hi-hat is very clear. Perfect dynamics.

Tom, I see you picked up a copy of Deep Purple's "Book Of Taliesyn." Did you have have it when it first came out in '68? It was a favorite album of mine at that time. "Shield" and "Anthem" are my favorites on the LP. I especially enjoy the percussive instruments on "Shield." I no longer have the LP but do have all three of Deep Purple's first LPs on CD.

Superb UK reissue pressing 1997 on 180 gr vinyl. Mastered from the original analog tapes. More is not possible for vinyl freaks, isn't it? "Mastered by Capitol" inscription in the deadwax. What is the meaning of the following sentence on back cover? "Users of Wide Range should adjust their controls for RIAA curve". Is anybody able to explain that?

listening to an old favorite; side 1 on a pair of Infinity ES 200 speakers that were recently refoamed, they're a really nice Infinity example 3-ways w/ Polycell mids and tweeters and they even have a passive woofer. Sounds great in the 14x14 room; also listened a bit on a pair of Magnepan MG-1 improveds but they are all midrange/not rock speakers. Listening to side 2 in the main room on the JBL Model 4430 studio monitors powered with a Mcintosh MC 2205, crushing.

interesting to read this old post ..... I'm now the proud (?) owner of a pair of Magnepan MG-1 improveds also. When tested with a Velodyne sub , it was pretty good.

Wow that is an old post. The Infinities are being enjoyed by a niece, the Magnepans were sent down the road quite long time ago.

I bet you're having fun with those. Very nice / magical when sitting in (a very narrow) sweet spot with the right material.

These days I listen to Planar Magnetics via HiFiman HE-400i headphones. There's no positioning fuss when the drivers are strapped to your head!

Stan Webb is Chicken Shack. Chicken Shack is Stan Webb. And this one was something new: the power trio with John Glascock (later Jethro Tull) bass and Paul Hancock drums. Those were the glorious days, when it was possible to add a 10 minute drum solo to a studio album. Pure magic: track B1 "Poor Boy". The cover painting is an icon of 70ies rock music. Stan Webb's guitar style is something special because in fact he was lefthanded. Because of lack of lefthand gibson guitars, he had to change his playing technique for the righthand Les Paul. German reissue of the 80ies. Unfortunately with unsatisfying dynamics. "Poor Boy" is a piece of rock music heaven.....

He never was lucky about his managers and record company dependences. So he shows on the cover pictures on this one: he is happy only with his cleaning lady. The listener of this one may be happy about his guitar playing and his helping hands: Tony Ashton piano, Bob Daisley bass, Chris Mercer (John Mayall, Juicy Lucy etc.) saxes. Very likeable this one!

There was not only the famous Rolling Stones Mobile Unite. Also Pye Studios were holders of a truck like that. See www.philsbook.com (http://www.philsbook.com). They recorded some famous albums as (the live part of) Ummagumma/Pink Floyd, Live at Leeds/Who, Five Bridges/Nice, The London Chuck Berry sessions, Uriah Heep Live, Focus at the Rainbow, Delaney Bonney and Friends on tour etc. Listen (what else?) to track B3, a fantastic version of "Poor boy". This was not a Goodbye, because Stan Webb was Chicken Shack. So look at my next post.

Superb English ffss pressing. Underrated.
In fact this one was the next Chicken Shack album by Stan Webb and "his" (?) Boogie Brothers: Miller Anderson (Keef Hartley Band) (1977 T. Rex!!!), Kim Simmonds, Jim Leverton, Eric Dillon (both of Noel Redding's Fat Mattress). They brought in many Southern rock influences into the blues rock of Stan Webb. Triple guitar player supergroup, wasn't it?
Listen to wonderful instrumental track B4 "Threegy blues": do you recognize the Gibson Les Paul solo? Unfortunately, they faded this track out after 2'12". This one is a forgotten gem. Does anybody know: is there anywhere on a record a complete alternative track or studio outtake of this blues?
So much talent couldn't be contained in one band and in a year they all went their own way again, leaving Simmonds to boogie on......

Recorded live at the Bridge House Canning Town, London on the Stiff Mobile. Apparently also Stiff Records owned a Mobile Recording Studio Unit. Ric Lee (Ten Years After), drums. Tony Ashton, keyboards. Paul Butler, guitars & vocals. Is he the man with the stratocaster? No, as far as i know, also he mostly played Les Paul models. Listen to the soulful track A4 "Black Night". IMHO also this one is a little gem.

Oh no, shame on Pete Haycock, on track A3 "Who cares" we may hear an electronic keyboard for the first time on an album by Stan Webb. Let's forgive them........

The master of the telecaster. This original 1973 issue is a superb US pressing with different label and number as your reissue. Interesting: The sleeve was printed in England. "Sterling" in the deadwax. "Tribute to Elmore James" shows the typical Telecaster sounds. I always thought he would take his guitar into his bed while sleeping. I was a fan of Roy Buchanan in the 70ies. But he was poorly produced in the 80ies until his lonely death in a prison cell.........

First record by an American Jazz group in Japan, as Cannonball introduces at the beginning of this LP. I always liked his introductions. Joe Zawinul was the future of Jazz then. Recorded in concert in Tokyo July 14 and 15, 1963. US 1990 reissue. Superb pressing. Pete Townsend was deeply impressed by the short track B1 "Tengo Tango", as he writes in his autobiography.

Sides A and B were recorded at the Jazz Workshop San Francisco, 1959. Quintet with Bobby Timmons on piano. This was a bestseller.
Sides C and D were recorded at the Village Vanguard, New York, 1962. Sextet with Joe Zawinul on piano. This is an essential one.
