Listening to record 1. I first heard these guys through their performance at Woodstock and The Fish Cheer - gimmee an 'F'. a band with music I've explored deeper in the last few years. Country Joe McDonald had a lot on his mind and some of it sticks for me, great psychedelic imagery and music.

Nice. A favorite Pentangle LP. great vocals, great electric & acoustic playing and well recorded. includes the traditional and beautiful Willy o' Winsbury - which Richard Thompson repurposed for the equally beautiful Farewell Farwell song by Fairport Convention. What a treat to hear versions of the melody sung by Jacqui McShee and Sandy Denny.

Very psyched to hear about this upcoming release. May be of interest to some of you Sandy Denny fans including SpeakerLabFan:
"THE LAST WORD ON FOTHERINGAY This 3CD/1DVD set is the most comprehensive compilation yet of the English folk group's recordings, including hitherto unseen television footage, previously unreleased live recordings from a festival in Rotterdam (both from August 1970) and, for the first time, the official release of the seven existing tracks which Fotheringay recorded in session for BBC radio. The final DVD disc is the real Holy Grail for Sandy Denny fans. The four songs recorded by the group for the German TV show Beat Club effectively double the existing footage of Sandy Denny in performance. Two of these, 'Nothing More' and 'John the Gun', were never even broadcast at the time. Nothing More comes in hardcover book format complete with rare and previously unseen photographs of the band plus previously unseen original sketches for the Fotheringay cover by Marion Appleton, Trevor Lucas's sister. Release date is March 30, 2015. Fotheringay Nothing More: The Collected Fotheringay (3CD+DVD, Box set) is priced at £34.99. - spincds.com" and £37.99 at Amazon UK. Here's the link.....

RIP Edgar Froese
"TANGERINE DREAMS' EDGAR FROESE R.I.P. 1944-2015
German artist and electronic music pioneer Edgar Froese, best known for founding the electronic music group Tangerine Dream, died on January 20 in Vienna of a plumonary embolism. He was 70. Among his works, in 1975, Froese released Epsilon In Malaysian Pale, a Mellotron-based piece inspired by a visit to the Malaysian jungle. Just before his death, Froese completed work on his 500-page autobiography, Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure - 1967 - 2014. Tangerine Dream's website posted: "The sadness in our hearts is immense. Edgar once said: 'There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address.' Edgar, this is a little comfort to us."

The consensus is that most important cut on the album was "Break on Through"

That's a great album.
I saw him solo at a little club in downtown Chicago in December 1983. I was out of work and visiting my sister. Browsing the Tribune for job openings, I saw an ad for him and said we got to go see this. My sister had never even heard of him but said OK. We took the "L" from Evanston downtown and found the club. It was a little place with tables for maybe 50 people. We got a table about 10 feet from the stage and ordered drinks. Joe came on and said very little, just started playing in his wonderful fluid style. Part way through his set somebody in the back got a little noisy and Joe stopped playing. When the noisemakers noticed they were interrupting he said something like "If you're not here for the music I can leave". Not another peep. It was a great performance and my sister was always so glad she heard him.

forget 180g .... these are 3/4 pound each
one side has disk number -R and the other a -L
that's a quarter laying next to the edge.
Edison’s 10-inch discs played for nearly five minutes per side with 150 threads per inch (TPI), and revolved at 80 RPM. They were also ¼-inch thick and were filled with wood flour, or later, china clay.
A latecomer to disks, Edison in 1912 introduced an 80 RPM record of a unique type, never copied by any other company, designed for playback with a permanently mounted precision-ground diamond stylus. Once seen, Edison "Diamond Discs" are instantly recognizable: ¼" thick, 10" in diameter , laminated in construction, with noticeably finer grooves than the average 78 and surfaces pressed not in shellac but in a Bakelite-like material actually called Condensite. I like to say that they are the closest thing man has devised to an indestructible object as long as they aren't played with a steel needle

I have the original 1977 pressing of The Mathematician's Air Display
on Virgin Records. Pekka's bass is amazing on this album -
but when did Pekka's 3rd album lose his name on top billing
so it turned into an Oldfield family product?
I know Pekka died a few years back, but that seems crass at best ...

Great title, would like to track down that original release. The German HB label was in business from 1974, lots of nice jazz reissues and compilations, I have a few others. Yes tacky cover but sounds great.

See if you can find Zappa "Roxy and Elsewhere" which is a double live LP consisting primarily of new material. Band includes Chester Thompson on drums, George Duke on keyboards, a full horn section, and some of Zappa's strongest material (much of which has a jazz fusion flavor on this album). The mailman showed up bearing gifts yesterday. I just bought all seven of the recently reissued Pretenders albums (their first seven albums). I buzzed through them to check out the sound quality and played one of them all the way through and the remastering job on these is stellar. This is the first time IMO the Pretenders albums sound better on CD than on vinyl (these were lovingly remastered from the original master tapes). Not to mention, the original single LP's are now each three disc remastered sets (two CD and one DVD except for "Packed" which is one CD and one DVD). They've included tons of rare and unreleased material ranging from live tracks to demos, b-sides, unreleased songs etc.--many of which are surprisingly good! The DVD's for each title include not only the promo videos for that particular album, but also live performances from that album's tour. Highly recommended for any fan of the Pretenders--not only for the abundance of extra material, but for the huge upgrade in sound quality.

Many fans only know the Pretenders early material, but some of their mid period and later albums are amazing! Here's one from the album "Packed".

Thanks, I did have a copy of that record in the past couple of years which I moved down the line after a couple of listens. I do have nice copies of Zappa studio LPs which are fun in small doses especially for the great playing and sound quality but most of the songwriting just doesn't click for me.

self published, recorded live, nice sound quality and nice grooves from the organ guitar drums tenor sax. standard fare nightclub stuff as the 2 star AllMusic review points out but I'm digging what they are laying down, they have my attention in a club. and yeah, nice collars dudes.

I was skeptical at first but after reading up on this and also confirming that this technology does NOT digitize the signal and after watching the first three minutes of the video (as far as I could get into it for now without getting bored by the "host"), this looks like a nice invention. You can easily adjust the lasers as needed (even on an LP to LP basis if needed) to read the part of the groove that has never been touched by a stylus (deeper in the groove than a stylus can reach) so you're basically listening to virgin vinyl. Will play severely warped LP's effortlessly and of course no wear to the LP's. Still need a great record cleaning system/machine of course.... I'm officially putting this toy on my birthday and holiday "wish lists" so everyone out there in this forum now know what to buy me! ;)
