Buddy Holly - For The First Time Anywhere

http://imageshack.us/a/img208/6034/bh001.jpg

This came to me in a plain white cover with the LP in NM shape. Thanks to Steve Hoffman for these gems.

from a 1987 Rolling Stone review (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/for-the-first-time-anywhere-19870318)

Last September, while rummaging in the mustier reaches of the MCA tape archives in Los Angeles, Steve Hoffman, head of the company's catalog-research-and-development department, came across a long-forgotten box marked "Do Not Use." Inside were some ancient tapes and another label: HOLLY. Rockets went off in Hoffman's head. He realized immediately that these were the master tapes of ten tracks that, although listed on Buddy Holly's MCA artist card, had never before been located. The songs, recorded between the end of 1955 and January 1958, captured Holly in all his wild rockabilly splendor, wailing for the ages. It is something of a public service that these tracks have finally been released on an album, For the First Time Anywhere.

ASIT ...I know this album well, seem to hear more detail in this QUAD copy ....
esp enjoy "Once there was a Time" :D

Once there was a time I'd rob my mama
For a good meal and a smoke
Once there was a time I'd sell my brother
For a dollar when I was broke

But I'd never sell my guitar
And my strings were always sharp
'Cause if I don't have a guitar
I'll be strumming on some angels harp

And if I don't get to heaven
And I go down there below
Better be a guitar when I get there
Or, I will refuse to go

Once there was a time I was hungry
And I'd find my food in some bin
But I'd never, never sell my guitar
'Cause that would, darling, that would be a sin

Ode to Joy (you know, from Ludwig Van Beethoven's 9th Symphony)??

We were at Lancaster Theological Seminary (Lancaster, PA) yesterday,
for a friend who was getting ordained,
and there was a lovely small pipe organ in place to accompany all the hymns ...
They finished the service with Ode to Joy ... one of my favorites -
it was just awesome on pipes, live!

Its going to be playing in my head for a few days before I pull out CDs of that "song"
and overwrite that audio memory!

58340

I read that they just put a huge pipe organ in at the Kennedy Center in DC,
but I haven't been to a concert there recently to hear it.

Big fun from the Canterbury crowd!

Of course, there was a stunningly good remaster of this album back in 2011 - at $25 for the 3 disc package, its quite affordable, too!
Amazon says: Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe three disc (two CDs + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) edition of this album.
Disc One contains the original album plus three brand new stereo mixes of album tracks by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree).
Disc Two contains four new stereo mixes of non-album tracks plus two previously unreleased recordings and five live tracks.
Disc Three is a DVD containing a brand new 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a new stereo mix of the entire album by
Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and two videos recorded for the German pop music program, Beat Club, in June 1971. Decca.

I finally found this compilation with mostly true stereo tracks. I did a comparison with a 1981 LP on the London label "electronically re-processed for stereo", and the bass, percussion is full and distinct here on songs like Come And Stay With Me ...instead of disappearing in the thin sounding London pressing. This record has a few different tracks too - including North Country Maid and Wild Mountain Tyme.

I haven't heard that 2011 remaster but I love what Steve Wilson did with the remaster of Jethro Tull "Aqualung" and King Crimson "Red". I'm generally not a fan of remixing "classic" albums (I usually prefer a remaster of the original mix as opposed to a remix) but Steve Wilson is a genius IMHO. He went in and remixed those two albums--brought the overall fidelity and sound quality up to modern standards while carefully duplicating/mimicking the original mix (incredibly faithful to the original mix) and the result was nothing short of astonishing. Those two albums never sounded better IMHO.

agreed ...but I recently checked out the Immersion DVD-A remaster set of 6 disks of DSOM. the booklet noted that the original LP was cut from a 3rd generation master tape, and they went back and found the 1st gen tape for the new set ...they have multi versions at different bit rates. Even the lowest one was spectacular. Understand that this album is imprinted on everyone's brain, BUT WOW ...I heard new details. Highly recommended.

(1976, UA)

Allmusic (http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-missouri-breaks-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-mw0000241108)

Sandwiched between John Williams' career-defining scores for the blockbusters Jaws and Star Wars sits his work on The Missouri Breaks, an eccentric and flawed 1976 Western starring Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson. While eschewing the grandiose string arrangements and heroic sweep of the composer's best-known efforts, it's nevertheless one of Williams' most delightful and ambitious scores, applying traditional Western instrumentation like guitar, banjo, and harmonica to melodies rooted in contemporary pop and jazz. It's an approach as idiosyncratic as the film itself (and if anything only compounds the narrative's disjointedness), but taken on its own terms The Missouri Breaks is a rare exercise in subtlety and restraint from Williams' most bombastic period as well as a potent reminder of his remarkable versatility.

Looked at vinyl at the flea market today .... 19 y.o (?) vendor came over to tell me that there was a Bob Dylan record in there, and he'd never seen Bob , but found out that he is black.

I replied "Oh really, he must have converted recently" ....kid dug it out.

Carlos Santana with Buddy Miles ...he thought Buddy was Bob :dont-know::crying::eek:

I was never a real Jeff Beck fan (well ok, The Yard Birds) until one night when we were about to go to bed and had Palladia on.
They were running...

Jeff Beck: Performing This Week... Live at Ronnie Scott's

...and I literally sat up and took notice. I was hypnotized. I could not go to sleep. The next morning I bought the Blu-Ray disc. This stuff is amazing.

Jeff Beck (guitar), Tal Wilkenfeld (bass), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards).

I have never heard bass playing like Tal Wilkenfeld's. Check out....Cause We've Ended As Lovers.......to die for!

Special guests

JOSS STONE....People Get Ready

IMOGEN HEAP.....Blanket....Rollin' And Tumblin'

ERIC CLAPTON.....Little Brown Bird.....You Need Love

It is my best DVD/Blu-Ray Music album, and the best live album I have ever heard.
Try it.

(The DTS track is much better than the Dolby track, at least on my setup.)
