yesterday I ran across a copy of The Eurythmics "Touch" ....I have a copy, but this one looked somewhat different ...flipped it over ...yup, made in West Germany ...TELDEC ..DMM .
So Direct Metal Mastering is a new one to me ... but, thanx Wiki ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Metal_Mastering

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Metal_Mastering) Direct Metal Mastering is a vinyl record (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinyl_record) manufacturing technology by TELDEC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teldec). Records manufactured with this technology are often marked by a "DMM" logo on the outer record sleeve. The cutting lathe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lathe) for DMM engraves the audio signal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_signal) directly onto a copper-plated master disc, instead of engraving the groove into a lacquer-coated aluminum disc. Examination of early DMM discs revealed what appeared to be a high frequency modulation in the groove, thought to be caused by the use of an ultrasonic carrier tone. In fact, there was no carrier tone and the modulation was simply caused by the vibration (squeal) of the cutter head as it was dragged through the copper disc. There is one drawback of this approach and that is because of the modulation arising from this cutting method, criticisms have arisen of the sound of such 'DMM' records. They are often labelled as bright or edgy. The Direct Metal Mastering technology addresses the lacquer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacquer) mastering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_mastering) technology's issue of pre-echoes during record play, caused by the cutting stylus unintentionally transferring some of the subsequent groove wall's impulse signal into the previous groove wall. In particular, a quiet passage followed by a loud sound often clearly revealed a faint pre-echo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-echo) of the loud sound occurring 1.8 seconds ahead of time (the duration of one revolution at 33 rpm). This problem could also appear as post-echo, 1.8 seconds after a peak in volume. Another improvement is noise reduction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_reduction). The lacquer mastering method bears a higher risk of adding unwanted random noise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_(audio)) to the recording, caused by the enclosure of small dust particles when spraying the silvering on the lacquer master, which is the necessary first step of the electroplating (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroplating) process for reproduction of the master disc. As the DMM master disc is already made of metal (copper), this step is not required, and its faults are avoided.

Anyway , this is the best sounding LP that I've ever played. :D

:applaud: Direct to Disc LPs are nice too. the space between tracks are longer because the musicians need to catch their breath and bearings before the next song. :D

Direct to disc recording refers to sound recording methods which bypass the use of magnetic tape (http://www.audioheritage.org/wiki/Magnetic_tape) recording and record audio directly onto analogue disc masters.

from the AllMusic review:

Although listeners would never know it by the practically ersatz interpretations, future Led Zeppelin members and mid-'60s London recording session musicians Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were contributors to the likes of "Walk on By," "Don't Make Me Over," "Blue on Blue," "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me," "Wives and Lovers," and "Anyone Who Had a Heart."

Great album! How does this version sound?

its scheduled to land in my mailbox on the 6th ...we did take the same new version from Blu-Ray, knock it down to FLAC's and burn to CD ...there is detail now that I didn't know was there ..bass is very solid and can now make out lyrics that were a little fuzzy before, nice balance.

I'm hoping that the vinyl played on either of my V-15's (T3 & T5) will do it justice... the T3 did an outstanding job on the DMM copy of Eurythmics "Touch" and as I type this, its doing a superb job on NY's "On the Beach" :D

re: PF/WYWH

a somewhat mixed bag .....I would say that its the best that this album has ever sounded to me, IF I had not heard the 5.1 BD (flac'ed & burned to 2 channel CD) ...

it seemed non-dynamic ...needed both bass & treb boost to sound good...honestly the Eurythmics DMM record and recent auditions of NY "On the Beach" were more dynamic , punchier , and ran with tone controls set flat.

there was the postcard, poster , resealable bag that were all OK, but the gem may be that it included a web address and code to download a digi copy.

I had an Amazon credit to use, and yes...I'd buy it again , partly so I can stop chasing vinyls to finally get a clean copy. .....it's one of my "Desert Island disks" ...so that's the story. ;)

This is a fantastic live album--great performance by Neil and the band and great song selection! I've only seen one Neil Young concert and it was back in the 90's. He did an acoustic tour--just Neil with his guitar and harmonica. I was blown away by his energetic/passionate performance and how full it sounded with him "thrashing" at his acoustic guitar--with just his harmonica and vocal added in the mix. His opening act that tour was the Indigo Girls who also were all acoustic--just Amy and Emily with their two acoustic guitars. They were fairly new on the "scene" back then, and their performance was very nice. A little jealous that you're seeing Neil this tour--how was the show?

all this talk abt Neil ..gotta chime in. I have a funny thang with NY. Really really like him, BUT after enough of his songs, the voice starts to grate and seems whinny.

do have most of his albums, but they don't get a lot of play. also, I 've been buying albums for my son who sells (many, many) on Discogs.com. I try to audition them before sending off for him to list & sell.

So "On the Beach" was headed to him and I gave it my cursory play. Ended up liking it so much that we agreed not to sell it (not super high value anyway) . Has gotten multiple plays and I'd really recommend it for someone in a similar situation.

Also I asked Chris what he'd like for Xmas ...this was his surprising answer, SJH , on vinyl of course. :D

They were fairly new on the "scene" back then, and their performance was very nice. A little jealous that you're seeing Neil this tour--how was the show?I enjoyed the show a lot – always enjoy his guitar playing, and along with Los Lobos, it was a night full of guitar rock. He played for 2+ hours ending with Tonight's The Night for the encore. He went through a bunch of guitars - I saw a black guitar and wondered if it's the special one mentioned in the Shakey biography. I’d already heard the new material and Walk Like A Giant is amazing live. lots of endless feedback drenched song endings. It was a bit like he was seeing how far he could push the false endings but the feedback was incredible even in the big arena, and I gather that's part of the bargain when Neil gets together with Crazy Horse. He played a few of the classics including Powderfinger, Cinnamon Girl, Tonights The Night, etc. - didn't do much for me maybe because they're overplayed for me. Really enjoyed Mr. Soul – hearing it live brought some reflection for me about the song and the times back in 1966 when he wrote it. I liked crescendo-ing recording of A Day in the Life before they took the stage, and then starting out by everyone singing the Star Spangled Banner with a US flag displayed above the stage - nice touch. I liked the show I saw a few years ago (2009?) and I remember that he was incredible with dueling guitars opposite Stephen Stills when I saw CSNY in 1974, but this was a great night and glad that I went.Neil playing with feedback...http://www.chrismeloche.com/NY-JLC-04-a.jpg

I always thought the watergate headline on the newspaper in the cover photo was a nice touch, especially with the general tone of the record.

reviewers thought so too " Then Play On (http://www.allmusic.com/album/then-play-on-mw0000651501) is a reminder of how pervasive and powerful Green (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/green-mn0000842611)'s influence was on Mac (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/mac-mn0000182900)'s originality and individual stance beyond his involvement. Still highly recommended and a must-buy after all these years, it remains their magnum opus"

last night PBS ran a show called "Inventing David Geffen" ....it alluded to an interesting interaction with NY ...ie: DG sued NY for not sounding like NY...

Who remembers the time when in 1985, Canadian folk-rocker Neil Young had gotten sued by Geffen Records for releasing "unrepresentative/uncommercial" albums, meaning, in other words, "music that was not typical of Neil Young and had lacked commercial appeal"?

His tenure at Geffen produced the following albums:
1982 - Trans (this album had a synthesized sound - with synthesizers, vocoders and synclaviers - typical of the New Wave sound then the norm of the 1980-1984 period)
1983 - Everybody's Rockin' (this album featured the hit single "Wonderin'", a throwback to the doo-wop sound of 1955-1959 and the rockabilly sound of 1950-1954 that dominated the rest of the album)
1985 - Old Ways (this album has a contemporary country sound to it)
1986 - Landing on Water (this album finds Young returning to the sound that made his 1982 release, Trans, as well as experimenting with other instruments)
1987 - Life (this contract-fulfilling album for the Geffen label reunited Young with his backing band, Crazy Horse)

Oh, yeah how can you go wrong with Maddy Prior from Steeleye Span? And June Tabor with a voice like Sandy Denny. it's a GREAT if you like an English acoustic traditional folk album with the combined harmonies from those two.

From Seawolf97's new thread on Ravi

Sad that he's gone--he brought Indian music to a whole new audience in North and South America, Europe, etc. I remember hearing his music for the first time on George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh album back in the early 70's and thinking how cool it was. Nice that you had a chance to see one of his concerts....

2 albums for Xmas that I've looked for quite a while , Beatles '65 and quad Abraxas ...in fantastic condition .... makes that 30 years of support worth it.

also picked up a real favorite yesterday in Mint condition, much better than the other B&S Tarkio that I'd purchased on eBay ..but this one was a dollar ..

My son called today and I thanked him for the vinyl .. sure that the Quad Abraxas was difficult to source. he had trouble deciding on the MasterDisk or Quad .... damn , he made the right decision. WOW again.

Couple of years ago I bought the MFSL gold CD , it was like a slightly better standard CD.

Not on this quad vinyl ...instruments that I'd never heard before , yips from the band during "Gypsy Queen" ...I almost thought it was a different mix, but concluded that its the same mix before being dumbed down for 2 channel ... WOW ..(a couple of tracks MAY be alt cuts, I'm guessing - as there are so many new sounds)

30 seconds into it and I ran over, grabbed a blank mini-disk , tossed it in the recorder and restarted the vinyl ....going to have to burn to CD too ... WOW ..I had no idea of what was missing ...it is so much richer ....even the opening piano on "Singing Winds" has a timbre that was unknown to me. WOW...the V-15T3 really does it justice. Now to try it on the Denon DP-60L with Mr.W's old V-15VXLM and the 250Ti's. (and 375wpc)

We were talking abt the quad records and he has a copy of "Can't Buy a Thrill" on quad, with a wonky jacket for me ....hope the improvement is that great on Steely Dan. ...WOW

The album cover for Some Girls was designed by Peter Corriston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Corriston), who would design the next three album covers as well, with illustrations by Hubert Kretzschmar. An elaborate die-cut design, with colours varying on different sleeves, it featured The Rolling Stones in garish drag alongside select female celebrities and lingerie ads. The cover immediately ran into trouble when Lucille Ball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucille_Ball), Farrah Fawcett (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrah_Fawcett), Liza Minnelli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liza_Minnelli) (representing her mother Judy Garland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judy_Garland)), Raquel Welch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raquel_Welch), and the estate of Marilyn Monroe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marilyn_Monroe) threatened legal action.
The album was quickly reissued with a revised cover that removed all the celebrities whether they had complained or not, and were replaced with black and punk style garish colours with the phrase PARDON OUR APPEARANCE - COVER UNDER RE-CONSTRUCTION (found on most reissues since). Jagger later apologised to Minnelli when he encountered her during a party at the famous discothèque Studio 54 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_54).

Great record, great songs. Actually it _is_ self titled. People called it Saturate Before Using by mistake because that's whats on the burlap water bag on the cover art. Jackson explains how the cover was designed and how the titled got mixed up in a fun clip here:

Listening to the Pet Sound sides. another great sounding pressing, I can really hear the rumbling thunder from Carol Kaye's bass. what a record.

Jackson Browne - self titled
(1972, Asylum)

Great record, great songs. Actually it _is_ self titled. People called it Saturate Before Using by mistake because that's whats on the burlap water bag on the cover art. Jackson explains how the cover was designed and how the titled got mixed up in a fun clip here:

I'm hearing light surface noise in all the quiet passages, but a nice pressing. it's not going to replace the UK copy.
