Otis Redding / The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival

Monterey Pop Fest ? in '67 some of my older friends organized a VW van load to go up there to the fest ... it was like $3 for a day ticket , 6 for all days. Dad wouldn't let me go , still had HS work to do...then a year later I end up in school at Monterey , just a little late ....but that was a great launching pad to see the Bay Area concerts of '68 :D

I had forgotten how great an album JT's "Stand Up" is...:bouncy: (so grabbed a digi copy too)

English folk-rock. This record was released in the U.K. as "What We Did On Our Holidays", with Sandy Denny's other worldly vocals on Fotheringay, Dylan's I'll Keep It With Mine, The Book Song, and others. Wonderful song writing from Denny and Richard Thompson. I can't get enough of this record or this version of the band.

Dead Flowers Lyrics
Artist(Band):Miranda Lambert

I feel like the
flowers in this vase,
He just brought em'
home one day,
"Ain't they beautiful"
he said.
They've been here in
the kitchen and the
water's turnin' grey.
They're sittin' in
the vase but now
they're dead.
Dead flowers.

I feel like this
long string of lights.
They lit up our whole
house on christmas day.
But now it's January
and the bulbs have
all burned out,
But still they hang.
Like dead flowers.

He ain't feelin' anything
My love, my hurt, or the
sting of this rain.
I'm livin' in a hurricane.
All he can say is,
"Man ain't it such a nice day"
Yeah, Yeah.

I feel like the
tires on this car.
They said we won't go far
but we're still rollin'
I look in the rear view
and I see dead flowers in the yard
and that string of lights.
But and it ain't glowin'
Like dead flowers.
Like dead flowers.

He ain't feelin' anything
My love, my hurt, or the
sting of this rain.
I'm drivin' through a hurricane.
All he can say is,
"Man ain't it such a nice day"
Hey, hey I guess we'll just
go to waste, like dead flowers.

Like dead flowers.
Dead flowers.

two songs are fake stereo - "Mother's Little Helper" and "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby..." and they sound like a mess, the rest are true stereo and sound very nice, easy to pick out the percussion effects and the stringed instruments, for example on "Lady Jane", finger snaps on "Out Of Time", however the bass and rhythm section low frequencies are pretty much buried non existent on this US pressing. :(

I'd forgotten how much fun this record is. Thunderous heavy metal meets prog rock. Stunning mastering by Gilbert Kong, it's easy to pick out the rhythm section in this record! Too bad there isn't a little more substance to the Heep's lyrics; they have always underwhelmed. They almost sound like a parody of the genre, something I'd expect from Spinal Tap. :D

Help! is a big fav, tho I enjoy the ST version much more than the songs only ...the movie was remastered 2-3 years ago and looks stunning ....of all the early Beatles albums, I keep coming back to "Beatles 65"

My son is a big Punk music fan and I was doing a little research, the Punk Crowd considers
"I saw her standing there" as a highlight of the genre ;)

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records%204/ch001-3.jpg

what a great record that flat-out cooks, their 2nd LP includes the hit "On The Road Again". This copy is a visual VG so it doesn't go near the Rega/Benz Ace but it plays with only a very light amount of surface noise even during the quiet parts. With Dr. John on piano, horn arrangements.

Help

Help! is a big fav, tho I enjoy the ST version much more than the songs only ...the movie was remastered 2-3 years ago and looks stunning ....

Good reminder, I watched the DVD a couple of years ago but I need to borrow a copy and watch again.

I heard someone describe the Beatles transition to more complex songwriting in Help! as witnessing the birth of new genre. I think it certainly does have hints of what was to come.

Truly scary. It will have you in it's grip until it blows you up softly. I think Mickey Hart is pretty much running the show on this one. Hells Bells." ...."The music is absolutely stunning. This is real-time scoring work, with the Dead's backline getting a lot of help from their friends (including Airto and Flora). This is primal, unforced, experimental, and raw, making for a listening experience unlike any other. The insert is informative, with insights into the creation of the music, and including a fair amount of technical detail on the recording and mastering processes. While "Napalm For Breakfast" will be a brutal low frequency response test of you system"

Mountain - Mountain Live

includes a note:

Mountain Live! Side 2 of this Mountain album is a live recording and is 29 minutes long. The usual length of an album side is generally not more than 23 minutes and because of the extra length of this side, the volume level is slightly lower than side 1. To achieve the best results, it is advisable to adjust your volume control.

and snagged these 3 LP's..all in mint condition....$1.25 total ...couldnt believe that I didnt have "Band" .... sure looked like James Coburn on the cover , and wiki verified that ..:dont-know: ....been enjoying the Eurythmics , so this was a welcome find.

Also received a disk that I had to go to 'Da Bay to obtain ...Mickey Hart's "The Apocalypse Now sessions" is out of print ...LP's are available, but because of the extreme LF , I could never get it to track properly ..so opted for the CD ..this is the spookiest thing I've ever heard :eek::eek:

I've never checked out the backstory on Coburn appearing on the cover. Was he a friend of the band, or ? He sure was a hoot, really enjoyed some of his films like The President's Analyst and Our Man Flint.

I bet that Mickey Hart / Airto work is impressive. The music that sticks with me from that movie of course is The Doors - The End. with those eerie Ray Manzarek keyboards.

I wondered abt that title ...figured that it was SOB's ...Sons of B!tches , but wiki says this

"Tons of Sobs is the debut album by English blues-rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues-rock) band Free (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_%28band%29), released on 14 March 1969. While the album failed to chart in the UK and reached number 197 in the US, Free are still cited as one of the definitive bands of the British blues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_blues) boom of the late 1960s even though this is the only album of their canon that can strictly be called blues-rock. The title of the album does not relate directly to the content of the album; it is both a colloquialism of "lots of money", reflecting the swaggering attitude with which the album was made, and an oblique reference to the darker, more sombre moments of the record."

been listening to a lot of FREE this past week (and always THE DOORS) so doing a little Wiki surfing , I found these snipllts

Paul Bernard Rodgers best known for his success in the 1970s as a member of Free (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_%28band%29) and Bad Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Company).

For a short time, Free were alongside Led Zeppelin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin) as among the highest grossing British acts though Free's status did not sustain.

It was revealed in April, 2011 that after Jim Morrison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Morrison)'s death, the rest of The Doors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doors) wanted Rodgers to replace him. Rodgers has said that he was unreachably rural at the time, and the moment passed.

I am not impressed much by the Bob Welch work here, but knocked out by Danny Kirwan's, be it his Hank B. Marvin style or the Blues stuff ("Morning Rain" is one of my favorite guitar recordings of all time). I was a bit shocked a while ago when I came across a 1990's documentary about the original Fleetwood Mac consisting of mostly performances. It ends up that Peter gave Danny a lot of space and parts. Half of what I had thought the playing of Green was Kirwan's - even on "Oh Well." Peter Green's FM had two phenomenal guitarists! I don't know how I do not remember this from their live gig oh so long ago.

Mind you, some listeners love the Welch stuff and yawn at Kirwan (and earlier, Green!). This album is also hard to like if you don't fancy the work of Christine McVie. Luckily for me, I do.

Do you like Kiln House any better?

I really like the Peter Green era, but there have been so many configs...that I've never kept track of who did what...parts of TUSK were OK, Oh Well was fantastic....Mystery got many plays . even The Dance and Rumors kept my interest
Future Games just didnt have any cohesion , nothing memorable ....Dont know abt Kiln House , checked it out a CD and it was physically unplayable , so tho I may have heard it , cant place any of it ....will put it on the radar

Oh yeah, did like parts of Bare Trees ...but The Goat Lady..not so much..

Whoa, this is the first Electronic Concept Orchestra title that I've heard. I was expecting cheezy easy listening. It's got the novelty of the Moog drones, bleeps and bloops but also some interesting and melodic popular tunes like The Look Of Love and Wichita Lineman, well recorded. These guys recorded between 1969 and 1973. I think I might have heard one of these titles while in the orthodontist's chair back in the 60s.

My favorite Johnson recording is "Come On In My Kitchen." I know you are not that into CDs, but the CD collection of these recordings has all the unused alternate takes. This is one body of work where they are worth hearing. All the releases are made from the same tape. The original metal parts disks are lost. :(

It is instructive of Rolling Stone's agenda that this is not in the top ten picks. Even figuring in that many feel the Vol 2 collection is the weaker one, 424 is unconscionably low. I also remember that their writers panned all the early Led Zeppelin LPs. One thing I remember them getting right was putting Muddy Waters on the cover when he passed away.

From the same 1969 Boston gigs that produced Jumping At Shadows (http://www.allmusic.com/album/jumping-at-shadows-r7384), this double album's appeal is more limited, with a heavier emphasis on straight blues boogie and eccentric fifties rock & roll parodies that featured Jeremy Spencer (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jeremy-spencer-p20672). Highlights are the 16-minute version of the British hit "Green Manalishi" and the 24-minute version of "Rattlesnake Shake."

Review written by [email protected] (http://discog.fleetwoodmac.net/[email protected]) ([email protected]), September 28th, 2009
The live version of "Rattlesnake Shake" on this album had to be the greatest guitar jam ever recorded, to date, at that time in '69.
Three outstanding guitarists, Spencer, Kirwin and Green trading licks across the stage... driven/supported by the incomparable Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on drums and bass.
It still kicks arse today and will certainly should make anyones' top ten list for greatest guitar jams of all time...it's still #1 on my list!

Yes, I actually saw it on Tv in French dokumentary series "Beaches of the Sixties" in episode Malibu where Dick Dale tells a story how they met in the early 60's. Back then Mr.Dale was a star & Jimi asked him about his unique guitar playing style. So Dick show him some trix and the rest Is history.

Blues Gold [Hip O]
http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/product/146855/blues-gold-hip-o

Album Review
None of the cuts on this two-disc, 38-track collection is particularly obscure or hard to find elsewhere, but what makes it a useful set is having them all in one package, and the end result is a nice introduction to modern electric blues. Included are such classic blues performances as Big Mama Thornton (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.53.62.56742/big-mama-thornton)'s "Hound Dog," T-Bone Walker (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.539.747.81051/t-bone-walker)'s "Call It Stormy Monday," Slim Harpo (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.512.524.79303/slim-harpo)'s "I'm a King Bee," Jimmy Reed (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.269.278.80687/jimmy-reed-blues---50s-to-70s)'s "Big Boss Man," John Lee Hooker (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.269.284.31943/john-lee-hooker)'s "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," Albert King (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.26.38.17151/albert-king)'s "Born Under a Bad Sign," Etta James (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.134.154.15515/etta-james)' "I'd Rather Go Blind," and Stevie Ray Vaughan (http://www.albumstack.com/mod/ecs/dept/24.512.532.41783/stevie-ray-vaughan)'s "Flood Down in Texas," among many others. Again, nothing here is going to make a blues collector jump up and shout, but they aren't going to complain, either, since every cut is a stone cold classic.

I'm of 2 minds on Clapton ..some times he's brilliant, others..he's schlocky

watching the PBS rebroadcast of the 1969 Johnny Cash variety show, Eric was not impressive,
and in fact his vocals with Traffic were kept low as they considered him a poor vocalist.

Roxy Music - Country Life

Roxy in top form. Cover says it all. 70's good life & sleaze. Album title is from the British rural lifestyle magazine Country Life. Ranked number 387 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Bryan Ferry, king of coolness

One of my all time favorite Roxy Music LP's. I love their early stuff (although I'm in the minority as Avalon was their most popular album). I have both versions of Country Life--the censored cover and the uncensored.... I'm a huge Eddie Jobson fan but their pre-Jobson LP's are amazing as well.
http://i532.photobucket.com/albums/ee329/pullingstringsband/Roxy.jpg
Coincidentally, I was just listening to Phil Manzanera's (Roxy guitarist) 1978 solo LP the other day "K=Scope". A nice album if you want to hear something different from the Roxy camp. Features an incredible lineup of talent including members of Split Enz! Eddie Rayner, Tim Finn and Neal Finn (later of Crowded House), also featuring John Wetton (!King Crimson, U.K., Family, Uriah Heep, etc.), Mel Collins (Camel, Clannad, Fish Out of Water (Squire), too many more to mention), Godley and Creme, Simon Phillips, Francis Monkman (Curved Air), and more......

Speaking of solo albums, I spun this one yesterday. Annie Haslam (of the band Renaissance) first solo LP (1977). Features her (then) husband Roy Wood (founder of the Move and ELO). Not as consistent as her work with Renaissance but features the great track "If I Were Made of Music" (written by Renaissance bassist Jon Camp)........ I saw Renaissance here in Rochester, NY about a year ago--(they are back together featuring Annie Haslam and primary composer/guitarist Michael Dunford). Great concert--Annie's voice still has that amazingly pure quality to it. They're coming back here this fall (check their tour schedule to find a venue near you). On this upcoming tour they will be performing two classic Renaissance LP's in their entirety: "Turn of the Cards", and "Scheherazade and Other Stories". A must see for any Renaissance fans out there....

The band was really tight when I saw them last year--great drummer and Tom Brislin on keys (he's played with YES and CAMEL in the past--two amazing bands)--and the bassist played Jon Camp's bass parts to a "T" --Michael Dunford was in great form on guitar (as always) and as I mentioned--Annie's voice is still remarkable.......

Classic LP by the Strawbs! "Grave New World" was their first release after Rick Wakeman left the band to join Yes and definitely one of their better LP's IMHO. I own all the Strawbs albums (including Dave Cousins and Dave Lambert solo LP's) and luckily they are another band from "back in the day" like Renaissance that is still together recording and touring. I've seen them several times including three times in the last decade--Rochester, NY is a regular stop for them when they do a U.S. tour. In fact they'll be touring this fall again (but not around here). Here's their upcoming tour schedule....http://www.strawbsweb.co.uk/@f/f_gigs.htm Every time I've seen them they've been great--they sometimes do acoustic tours but the upcoming one is "electric" with the full band. The last time I saw them on one of their "electric" tours was about 3 or 4 (?) years ago and they toured with the entire lineup from their 1974 album "Hero and Heroine" (ALL the original members who were on that LP!). Some really interesting looking 60's psych shown on this thread--much of which I've never heard of. You guys have great collections--I've been checking out some of these bands on youtube today--some cool stuff.....

Here's a 60's psych band I've always really liked. Their first/self titled LP "GUN" in particular is a timeless classic IMHO. The band features Adrian Gurvitz on guitar and vocals, and brother Paul Gurvitz on bass (on this album they were using the stage names Adrian Curtis and Paul Curtis). You may know these guys as members of the Baker Gurvitz Army (with Ginger Baker--a great band), and also as members of the Graeme Edge Band (Moody Blues drummer--another great band). Cover art by a (very young) Roger Dean......
