This record was released in the U.K. as "What We Did On Our Holidays", with Sandy Denny's other worldly vocals on Fotheringay, Dylan's I'll Keep It With Mine, The Book Song, and others. Wonderful song writing from Denny and Richard Thompson. I can't get enough of this record or this version of the band.

two songs are fake stereo - "Mother's Little Helper" and "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby..." and they sound like a mess, the rest are true stereo and sound very nice, easy to pick out the percussion effects and the stringed instruments, for example on "Lady Jane", finger snaps on "Out Of Time", however the bass and rhythm section low frequencies are pretty much buried non existent on this US pressing. :(

I'd forgotten how much fun this record is. Thunderous heavy metal meets prog rock. Stunning mastering by Gilbert Kong, it's easy to pick out the rhythm section in this record! Too bad there isn't a little more substance to the Heep's lyrics; they have always underwhelmed. They almost sound like a parody of the genre, something I'd expect from Spinal Tap. :D

"I saw her standing there" as a highlight of the genre ;)

what a great record that flat-out cooks, their 2nd LP includes the hit "On The Road Again". This copy is a visual VG so it doesn't go near the Rega/Benz Ace but it plays with only a very light amount of surface noise even during the quiet parts. With Dr. John on piano, horn arrangements.

Good reminder, I watched the DVD a couple of years ago but I need to borrow a copy and watch again.

I heard someone describe the Beatles transition to more complex songwriting in Help! as witnessing the birth of new genre. I think it certainly does have hints of what was to come.

includes a cover of The Beatles "You Can't Do That" which references twenty other Beatles songs in Nilsson's arrangement, and lots of other clever songs with a rich late 60s studio production, very nice low frequencies. A $1 thrift find this morning with water damage on the cover, but the record cleaned up nicely on the VPI 16.5 record cleaning machine after a pre-rinse in the sink, and plays nicely with only light surface noise in the quiet passages.

so we finally see the sun today, but I've about worn out the local thrifts , so took a drive down to the Hawthorne record stores ...good timing. Wore old pants for floor sitting (SLF knows) ie: I only buy dollar albums, which are always in boxes on the floor.

Anyway , broke my dollar limit when I saw this 5 LP Ray Charles box set for $8 ..like new :D
then I get down to another $1 section and its like Robert Cray city ..:bouncy:

the 3 in the last pic are ALL still factory sealed :p

Taco (Puttin' on the Ritz) is extremely well recorded and so bought this second copy, and well...The Buckinghams GH is a no-brainer :applaud:

and snagged these 3 LP's..all in mint condition....$1.25 total ...couldnt believe that I didnt have "Band" .... sure looked like James Coburn on the cover , and wiki verified that ..:dont-know: ....been enjoying the Eurythmics , so this was a welcome find.

Also received a disk that I had to go to 'Da Bay to obtain ...Mickey Hart's "The Apocalypse Now sessions" is out of print ...LP's are available, but because of the extreme LF , I could never get it to track properly ..so opted for the CD ..this is the spookiest thing I've ever heard :eek::eek::eek:

I've never checked out the backstory on Coburn appearing on the cover. Was he a friend of the band, or ? He sure was a hoot, really enjoyed some of his films like The President's Analyst and Our Man Flint.

I bet that Mickey Hart / Airto work is impressive. The music that sticks with me from that movie of course is The Doors - The End. with those eerie Ray Manzarek keyboards.

I wondered abt that title ...figured that it was SOB's ...Sons of B!tches , but wiki says this

been listening to a lot of FREE this past week (and always THE DOORS) so doing a little Wiki surfing , I found these snipllts

interesting stuff. I don't think anyone could replace Jim Morrison. But I think Paul Rodgers, with those great blues vocals, fronting Ray Mazarek keyboards and Robby Kreiger on guitar would have been an interesting listen.

I am not impressed much by the Bob Welch work here, but knocked out by Danny Kirwan's, be it his Hank B. Marvin style or the Blues stuff ("Morning Rain" is one of my favorite guitar recordings of all time). I was a bit shocked a while ago when I came across a 1990's documentary about the original Fleetwood Mac consisting of mostly performances. It ends up that Peter gave Danny a lot of space and parts. Half of what I had thought the playing of Green was Kirwan's - even on "Oh Well." Peter Green's FM had two phenomenal guitarists! I don't know how I do not remember this from their live gig oh so long ago.

Mind you, some listeners love the Welch stuff and yawn at Kirwan (and earlier, Green!). This album is also hard to like if you don't fancy the work of Christine McVie. Luckily for me, I do.

Do you like Kiln House any better?

I really like the Peter Green era, but there have been so many configs...that I've never kept track of who did what...parts of TUSK were OK, Oh Well was fantastic....Mystery got many plays . even The Dance and Rumors kept my interest
Future Games just didnt have any cohesion , nothing memorable ....Dont know abt Kiln House , checked it out a CD and it was physically unplayable , so tho I may have heard it , cant place any of it ....will put it on the radar

Oh yeah, did like parts of Bare Trees ...but The Goat Lady..not so much..

Whoa, this is the first Electronic Concept Orchestra title that I've heard. I was expecting cheezy easy listening. It's got the novelty of the Moog drones, bleeps and bloops but also some interesting and melodic popular tunes like The Look Of Love and Wichita Lineman, well recorded. These guys recorded between 1969 and 1973. I think I might have heard one of these titles while in the orthodontist's chair back in the 60s.

Totally awesome !!! :thmbsup: I got cool french reissue in stereo on fun club but this is the real thing. Some reissues like Norton are not done well :scold: so peple can't feel the real energy. One of these days I'm gonna get myself an original too :cool:

I think it's stunning, really like the folk pop influences that were probably swirling around the LA music scene at that time and made it into Bryan Maclean's and Arthur Lee's heads and onto this record.

Leadon, Meisner, Henley and Frey were first together in 1971 to play on Linda Rondstadt's self titled record. This record leads off with "Take It Easy" which is great advice for a Friday night -- "lighten up while you still can...". Glenn Frey co-wrote the song with neighbor Jackson Browne.

This is a compilation of songs that Brel wrote and recorded for Philips in the late 50s and 1961. He recorded the songs later under the same title for Barclay in 1972; I think these are the originals owned by Philips and re-released in this compilation, maybe released after he died in 1978? I'm getting acclimated to the French language, as the family and I are heading over to that side of the pond in a couple of days to attend a wedding and for some vacation time.

My favorite Johnson recording is "Come On In My Kitchen." I know you are not that into CDs, but the CD collection of these recordings has all the unused alternate takes. This is one body of work where they are worth hearing. All the releases are made from the same tape. The original metal parts disks are lost. :(

It is instructive of Rolling Stone's agenda that this is not in the top ten picks. Even figuring in that many feel the Vol 2 collection is the weaker one, 424 is unconscionably low. I also remember that their writers panned all the early Led Zeppelin LPs. One thing I remember them getting right was putting Muddy Waters on the cover when he passed away.

I discovered record shows this last year ..they arent well advirtised , only $2-3 admission , and tons of cheap vinyl ....it takes something special to make me pay over $1-2 per and even then I come home with lots....

Oh yeah..on some records that I just cant find and give up looking ...have gone to eBay ..they can be surprisingly cheap.

The live version of "Rattlesnake Shake" on this album had to be the greatest guitar jam ever recorded, to date, at that time in '69.
Three outstanding guitarists, Spencer, Kirwin and Green trading licks across the stage... driven/supported by the incomparable Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on drums and bass.
It still kicks arse today and will certainly should make anyones' top ten list for greatest guitar jams of all time...it's still #1 on my list!

Yes, I actually saw it on Tv in French dokumentary series "Beaches of the Sixties" in episode Malibu where Dick Dale tells a story how they met in the early 60's. Back then Mr.Dale was a star & Jimi asked him about his unique guitar playing style. So Dick show him some trix and the rest Is history.

A Rolling Stone magazine reviewer called them the British equivalent to The Band in a review of this album with their channeling of traditional British folk while staying rooted in rock. No Sandy Denny here, but its still the tasty Fairport playing with Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick taking over vocals. "Sloth" , a 9 minute track closing out side 1 is dazzling and incendiary.

I need repeated listenings to appreciate Beefheart records, but it's worth the effort. Clear Spot is a little more accessible than other titles that I have - having Ted Templeman, who produced the Doobie Brothers, as producer probably helps here. "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles" is on The Big Lebowski soundtrack.

I'm of 2 minds on Clapton ..some times he's brilliant, others..he's schlocky

watching the PBS rebroadcast of the 1969 Johnny Cash variety show, Eric was not impressive,
and in fact his vocals with Traffic were kept low as they considered him a poor vocalist.

Was listening to Clapton Unplugged last night and feel its in his top 3 , along with Just One Night
and 461 Ocean Blvd.

Produced by Ed Cobb, ingenious producer/arranger/writer, back then a manager of The Standells & The Chocolate Watchband. He wrote their 1st hit "Dirty Water" along with "There Is A Storm Comin'", "Why Pick on Me", "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White", "Barracuda" etc.
Great punchy sound. "Riot On The Sunset Strip" is a 60's punk classic :thmbsup::thmbsup::thmbsup:

One of my all time favorite Roxy Music LP's. I love their early stuff (although I'm in the minority as Avalon was their most popular album). I have both versions of Country Life--the censored cover and the uncensored.... I'm a huge Eddie Jobson fan but their pre-Jobson LP's are amazing as well.

Coincidentally, I was just listening to Phil Manzanera's (Roxy guitarist) 1978 solo LP the other day "K=Scope". A nice album if you want to hear something different from the Roxy camp. Features an incredible lineup of talent including members of Split Enz! Eddie Rayner, Tim Finn and Neal Finn (later of Crowded House), also featuring John Wetton (!King Crimson, U.K., Family, Uriah Heep, etc.), Mel Collins (Camel, Clannad, Fish Out of Water (Squire), too many more to mention), Godley and Creme, Simon Phillips, Francis Monkman (Curved Air), and more......

Speaking of solo albums, I spun this one yesterday. Annie Haslam (of the band Renaissance) first solo LP (1977). Features her (then) husband Roy Wood (founder of the Move and ELO). Not as consistent as her work with Renaissance but features the great track "If I Were Made of Music" (written by Renaissance bassist Jon Camp)........ I saw Renaissance here in Rochester, NY about a year ago--(they are back together featuring Annie Haslam and primary composer/guitarist Michael Dunford). Great concert--Annie's voice still has that amazingly pure quality to it. They're coming back here this fall (check their tour schedule to find a venue near you). On this upcoming tour they will be performing two classic Renaissance LP's in their entirety: "Turn of the Cards", and "Scheherazade and Other Stories". A must see for any Renaissance fans out there....

Speaking of solo albums, I spun this one yesterday. Annie Haslam (of the band Renaissance) first solo LP (1977). Features her (then) husband Roy Wood (founder of the Move and ELO). Not as consistent as her work with Renaissance but features the great track "If I Were Made of Music" (written by Renaissance bassist Jon Camp)........ I saw Renaissance here in Rochester, NY about a year ago--(they are back together featuring Annie Haslam and primary composer/guitarist Michael Dunford). Great concert--Annie's voice still has that amazingly pure quality to it. They're coming back here this fall (check their tour schedule to find a venue near you). On this upcoming tour they will be performing two classic Renaissance LP's in their entirety: "Turn of the Cards", and "Scheherazade and Other Stories". A must see for any Renaissance fans out there....

Got all the Obi-sash mini-LP versions of the CDs when they remastered the catalog back around 2000.

Got him to sign my Mamouna CD last time I saw him at a small nightclub in DC (the 930 club) with Chris Spedding and the Ferry band at the time ... great stuff!

I have Siren (another Roxy LP with Eddie Jobson on keyboards) and I've heard Avalon and like them both. I've never heard Manifesto or the Ferry LP's though.........

Great! Hope you enjoy the concert. The band was really tight when I saw them last year--great drummer and Tom Brislin on keys (he's played with YES and CAMEL in the past--two amazing bands)--and the bassist played Jon Camp's bass parts to a "T" --Michael Dunford was in great form on guitar (as always) and as I mentioned--Annie's voice is still remarkable.......

"Manifesto" & Ferry's "The Bride Stripped Bare" are great, I recommend both :thmbsup:. "Another Time, Another Place" is so so :hmm: too many covers.

Here are two more of my favorite Strawbs albums "Ghosts" and "Hero and Heroine"....

Also yesterday grabbed the CD "Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encomium:_A_Tribute_to_Led_Zeppelin wasn't even worth putting on the pod ..bunch of 80's/90's groups trying to simulate LZ ...whats the point ? they can't do it half as well and the whole CD just comes off as a money making wannabe/ripoff ,,:eek:

Oh yeah, Encomium contained a duet of Plant with Torie Amos on "Down by the Seaside" .....nearly got the shakes from the hideousness of it...:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Well, some are originals like Dick Dale, The Ventures, Davie Allan & The Arrows, The Hondells, The Buddies, Hal Blaine... The others are US reissues like Count Five, The Music Machine, The Seeds, Nazz, The Remains, The Wailers, The Litter... Euro reissues are The Standells, Love, The Stooges, Link Wray, The Sonics, Pretty Things...
I've got a lot of fine reissues on Sundazed (http://www.sundazed.com/) label. They have great catalog of 60's garage/surf/psychedelic/r&b vinyls. :thmbsup::thmbsup::thmbsup:

:applaud: Great band. Hard to beat the British folk rock of that era! Strawbs, Pentangle, Fairport, Steeleye. Too bad, it looks like the Fall Strawbs touring is in the UK.

with an experimental microphone placement technique called binaural recording, apparently it's only really noticeable when listening through headphones. I'm not hearing anything unique about the recording listening through speakers, although the studio tracks as sound nice as expected since the mastering is Sterling Ted Jensen.

Some really interesting looking 60's psych shown on this thread--much of which I've never heard of. You guys have great collections--I've been checking out some of these bands on youtube today--some cool stuff.....

Here's a 60's psych band I've always really liked. Their first/self titled LP "GUN" in particular is a timeless classic IMHO. The band features Adrian Gurvitz on guitar and vocals, and brother Paul Gurvitz on bass (on this album they were using the stage names Adrian Curtis and Paul Curtis). You may know these guys as members of the Baker Gurvitz Army (with Ginger Baker--a great band), and also as members of the Graeme Edge Band (Moody Blues drummer--another great band).
