It's worth a mention that J. Gordon Holt passed away last month. He's had several complimentary things to say about JBL systems over the years, including this influential (to me) review of the Performance Series.

He was a fixture in the AV community for decades, and he often said things people didn't want to hear. I'll miss his work.

Thanks for sharing... I do think he was a very important contributor to our hobby and will certainly be missed.

I still read Stereophile, the magazine he created and to some extent still follows in the direction he pointed, though I find equipment reviews of less and less relevance.

was refreshing to read articles where the author stuck to his guns but
wasn't close-minded. I still have the itch to hear a pair of Soundlabs driven by
SA-1's :)

I grew up reading what he had to say and I didn't always agree but it made for interesting reading...he contributed much! RIP.

Yes, its sad, sad to see the ones that were there when the hobby was really catching on fire. Felt like this with Walter Cronkite and Johnny Carson. I guess time marches on, nothing certain but death and taxes. Good bye,
J Gordon Holt.

I dont remember reading any J Gordon Holt . Was he mostly in Stereophile ?

(and as a current subscriber, I agree with Widget that most reviews/tests have nothing to do with the real world)

Julian Hersh was the one who's word I followed. :bouncy:

Learned a lot from Ken Pohlman also, but didnt care for his personal views.

Yeah, Pohlman could be an SOB sometimes, but he could usually back it up.

As for Holt, check it out:

I have a another link I'll post when I find it.

I knew that the name sounded familiar. :hmm:

Gordon Holt narrates Track 5 of the Stereophile Test CD entitled "Why Hi-Fi Experts Disagree" which is actually a microphone comparison that includes:

Shure SM57, AKG D190E, Sennheiser MD441, Electrovoice RE20, Coles 4038, B&K 4006, Crown PZM, Milab LC25, Neumann LC25, Neumann TLM170, AKG C414B, Neumann U87, Neumann U47FET, Neumann U67, Telefunken U47, Telefunken ELAM251, AKG C12, AKG C12-modified, and EAR The Mic. All were recorded on a Nakamichi 1000 R-DAT.

Takes a good set of speakers to resolve the minute differences.
