Hi Folks ,

I'm using a Bryston BP 4 and the question is ' can I take a signal from both the balanced out and rca mains out' ? .

TIA , Rich

Looking at this schematic, I don't think that would be a good idea. I am not an expert, but it would seem to me it would pull down the voltage on one side of the balanced outputs... making them less than balanced. The manual may discuss this.

Cheers Widget,

back to the drawing board:o:

Rich, already gone?
And it would have been only one more resistor within the Bryston: An extra one coming from between line driver and inverter going to RCA, this would have decoupled both outputs...

There is much work, I still don't know.
In case I would take my iron ... (For me there is no problem with weight.)

Rich I don't want to argue with Widget, but it's likely it's okay IMHO, providing you don't load the unbalanced side too much. Why don't you ask Bryston directly, here:

Oh come on... Widget likes a good argument. :D

Provided the driver has a sufficiently low output impediance (less than 100 ohms) and the rca input impedance is high (greater then 10,000 ohms) it should work.

Be careful of earthing issues though.

My question is why would you use both at the same time?

Also be careful not to create a feeback loop by feeding the output of the other device back into the preamp. This perhaps the most important point as it will detroy your amp and loudspeakers.

Gents,
I guess the general consensus being .... ' stick to hackin wood and leave the amp alone .. !

Thanks all , Rich

Are you sure your 4b Pro is balanced? Depending on the year, Bryston issued XLR connections on all of their pro line but they came as unbalanced standard. The balancing transformers were an option; I own a pair of those amps and did not feel the need to balance them. The only draw back is when you use an unbalanced connection the whole chain becomes unbalanced.

Depending on your setup, power supply and cable runs, unbalanced can sound fine. You will not damage your gear by using both connections so why not experiment with it and see if it works. If it works just fine--then great.

Typically, for short cable runs, it's not an issue using unbalanced connections anyways, unless there's a ground loop issue you need to lift a ground connection for.
