JBL 2342 / EV DL-10X Project

I've finally made some progress on the JBL/EV project. I'm still a long way from finished, but had to hook them up. Currently I'm using the DCX2496 to actively crossover at 100hz and 1.2khz....with some compensation for the CD horn and a few other tweaks. I'm encouraged by what I hear...but the DCX just lacks transparency and depth (yuck).....so passive crossovers are a must.

Components are JBL2342 Horns with 2417H drivers, and Electro Voice DL-10X midrange drivers.

On the agenda....

1) Design a passive crossover. (I think I'm going to use the HP section from the 4425 schematic and tailor the LP section to suit....with some tweaks to the HP section as needed)

2) Veneer the cabinets. (Austrailian Lacewood with Tung Oil finish)

3) Finish milling and then paint the end caps. (Black)

4) Stuff these boxes......

I like the idea of an EV/JBL combo. I started out with EV components and started mixing them with JBL drivers. I now have all JBL but I miss my old EV stuff. It's a shame that they got out of the home stuff, I really liked the interface line.:blah:

Buy the way, are you planning to run a sub with these?

The EV is a great match for this horn/compression driver combo. The efficiency is nice and high, and the beamwidth at 1kz matches the horn nicely (around 100 degrees). The EV is well built too...nice cast frame, huge magnet, large voice coil....i'm quite happy with it.

Will definately be running a sub with these, only expecting usable ouput to 80hz....will XO actively to my 2242H's from there.

Those look nice! I have a pair of those horns as well. One of these days I want to make a set of rears out of them. What will you be using those for??

2 ch listening.....something different....the Urei's are great, but sometimes I like a little more high end sizzle...also hoping for better imaging.

I have built and tested the 4425 high pass crossover, and have found that the attenuation across the whole band is somewhat high. After running some simulations in SoundEasy, I have found that the circuit used in the 4430 does not appear to have this issue. I am going to use the 4430 circuit as a starting point for a re-design of the network. As of this point, my 10" EV driver will be about 10db hotter than the compensated horn...that won't fly.

In the attached image, I overlaid the response of the 2342 with and without the crossover (4425 high pass section) in line. Drive level and microphone placement are identical. I hope to have much less attenuation at 12kHz+ with a new circuit design.

I've worked up the nerve to attach that expensive Australian Lacewood veneer....

also shown is a scrap with 2 coats of the tung oil on it...will be going for 3~4 coats I suspect...

3 coats of tung oil, and a lot of rubbing later...I'm happy with the results...now on to the end caps...
