Hi Guys,

Been thinking about replacing the HL93 horn/lens of my C50 with 2390 or 2397 and mounting them on top of the cabinets with the 375 drivers. I'll be using the stock LX5 networks with them.

Does anyone have any experiene if they'll sound better?

Any other horn recommendations?

Thanks,
Guy

GuyOur member rloggie, did this with a pair of "Westlake" versions of the 2397. Here is a pic he posted some years back when he was playing around with some Altec Model 19s also. You should send him a PM and ask his opinion of the system.

Thanks guys,

I was asking this because the HL93 is recommended for 800hz or above as well. http://www.lansingheritage.org/images/jbl/catalogs/1973-home/page19.jpg

I was asking this because the HL93 is recommended for 800hz or above as well.JBL over time has raised the recommended lowest crossover frequencies for most of their horns. In the '60s JBL called the HL93 a 500Hz horn. By 1976 the 2311 which is the pro model number for the HL93 horn was rated as a 1200Hz horn.

You can use a 2397 at 500Hz. Personally I would not, but many have, and many have been quite happy doing so.

In my opinion, using a horn lower than ideal will contribute to what we typically call "a horn like sound". From empirical studies, i.e. screwing around with many horns, I have found that using a 500Hz horn down to 800Hz will typically sound better. I personally like the 2397 when crossed over at 1200Hz.

Thanks Mr Widget.

Any other horn that you can recommend instead? To use down to 500Hz?
Not really. Certainly nothing that is domestically acceptable.

If the original question can be restated as, "What horn will provide better loading at 500 Hz than the H93 ," then the answer will be, "all of the above."

Thanks for the info speakerdave and Widget.

I have sent a PM to RLoggie regarding his experience as well.

I've got some Westlake style clone horns and would have to agree.

These would probably be usable: http://www.geocities.jp/arai401204/Horn/A290S/A290-S90.html

A bit of work and you're there.

Probably not domestically acceptable in a living room, but you never know how far you can come with creative negotiations with your better half.

Why all the interest lately in crossing anything over at 500 Hz?

I prefer not to change anything that drastically. Adding an extra woofer like in the 4 way studio monitors and going active is a bit too complicated for me at this point.

Thanks. I'll give these a thought.
