Audio Magazine's Annual Equipment Directory ... October 1989 and 1990
have listings with info of questionable accuracy, but mostly re driver sizes.
Advertisement in 1989 issue has some mostly non-technical text on the left
and a 511 tower next to a harp, on the right. That they could be bi-, tri-, or
quad-amped, with individual level controls was a touted feature.

Specs listed in directory were 20-22KHz +/-3dB, 92 dB SPL @1w, crossover
freqs: 180, 1.5KHz, 3.5KHz, size 57x13x14", Finishes are "optional", 110lbs/ea,
and $3000.00/pr. Top of the line appeared to be the 512 at $4500/pr with same
specs (as listed in the directory).

I'll try to get a scan of the ad this week and post.

...I assume this was a commercial flop; the price is sky-high for the times; right?

It is a shame this company lost it way, however, since they did produce some great stuff over the years.

Wow sorry I'm late to this but I bought the Altec Lansing 508's new because I couldn't afford the 511's.
By the way, I listened to carvers, polks, infinity's and many others and my ears liked the Altecs.
Remember when you could go and listen....
Anyway I saw a listing online for the 511's in FL. I scheduled a pickup while on vacation and drove them all the way back to NJ.
They are power hungry.
I am using 250 watt mono blocks for the bass and 200 watt pc amp for the highs.
Before I did this I drove them with a 170 watt pc receiver that did'nt do them justice.
I know that a lot of fans think that when the horns stopped so did Altec.
My ears just don't get it.
You know they say listen to what you like and for me this is about as good as it can get.
If any one has a user manual I'd love to get a copy for s&g's to have around.
