Hi

Has anyone built surroundloudspeakers of JBL drivers?

Maybe the 2123 would suite, but what about the high-driver ?

What drivers does JBL choose in their surroundloudspeakers?

Hello,
Jbl use economical driver for surround.
JBL Pro cinema:

8330: 308G-4a woofer 8in, medium 505G, tweeter Laminate titanium (style audax); thx.
8340: No for home use! woofer 127h-3 and compression 2412.

JBL home:
ht1D: 305g-3a (130mm) tweeter 020nd
S1A synthesis: 2118J (8in) and compression 2416h
S2A synthesis: 305G-3a and compression 75245 (identical JBL pro8333 surround obsolete)

"Has anyone built surround loudspeakers of JBL drivers?"

Yes, I just finished another pair of 4406 clones (mirror imaged)

I am running L20T very similar to 4406's now. I have a set of 2118's and a 2404 to build as surrounds. I need the added sensitivity and am curious how the 2404's horn's will do back there. As soon as it stops raining I would like to cut the wood for them.

How many surroundloudspeakers are you all using?
I plan to use ca 10 of them .

It tends to be alot of drivers, so i maybe will build some
with audax drivers perhaps.

I use the same speakers for all 5 channels. (5) L212. The L212s have a 066 tweeter, LE5-9 midrange(2105 can be used), and 112A/H(or 2108). Using the same drivers will give you better sonic match as the sound moves from front to back or back to front.
Also if you have or are going to get dvd audio you need full range speakers all around

I agree completely with MJC if you are doing a multi-channel system. If you are going to get the full benefits of a 5.1 channel music mix the five speakers do need to be identical.

So far I haven't been convinced it is time to go this route for my primary music system. I do believe in the future most of us will, but for now the multi-channel preamps that I have heard are all terrible and there still isn't enough music that is mixed the way I prefer (being in the audience as opposed to being in the band) to justify the complexity. That said I do have two separate 5.1 set ups.

In my home theater set up I have the three front channels using high efficiency horn two ways that are bi-amped with 200wpc to the woofers and 200wpc to the horns. The two rear surrounds are 6.5" SEAS and 1.25" Audax powered by 100wpc and they do just fine. I have a pair of L100s I thought I might use but these little speakers keep up just fine. The front channels are 16' / 4.88m away and the rears are 13' / 3.96m from the center of the listening/veiwing couch. I like the little two ways because they are not visually distracting in the room. They were not purpose built, they were left overs from another project, but they work just fine.
