View Full Version : Multichannel recordings - recommendations?

I have put my eyes on SACD but only a few are multichannel recordings. I have found it quite pleasing to listen to more than two channels. Some recordings are good, some are not so convincing.
(In acoustics investigations are going on.)

- Very fine is Erich Kunzel with music by Tchaikowsy on Telarc. 1812 included, the cannon come inevitable from all different corners ;)
- The Moody Blues have some fine SACDs in multichannel.
- Not to forget Pink Floyd with The Dark Side of the Moon.
- The Beatles LOVE on DVD is produced very fine IMHO.
- Interesting Benny Goodman Supreme Jazz (www.membran.net (http://www.membran.net)), Chicago 1909 - New York 1986. Carefully produced but only artifical room information is added.

To me, multi channel recordings are a bit pointless because when you are listening to a concert you dont want to be sitting on tha stage with the musicians. Movies do though......

Multichannel reproduction offers the possibility to playback room information intended by the recording process in a much better way than two channel recordings can do, when done proberly - that's why the question for ... recommendations?
I prefer the musicians in front of me too. And I do not mean what some video DVDs offer with their 'surround' - sound (formerly called ping-pong.).
For example Bachs Chrismas Oratorio could profit from multichannel.

The Crystal Method Legion of Boom is a great addition to any multichannel sound collection as are the Porcupine Tree discs, though some are better than others and occasionally the mixes are uneven.

Monster Music's (yes, that Monster, as in Cable) DVD-A of Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company is surprisingly excellent in its execution.

Neil Young's Prairie Wind DVD-A is a great surround effort. It's like sitting in the studio.

Emmylou Harris' Producer''s Cut DVD-A is a real treat.

I should add that the DVD-A version of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is well worth seeking out. The official SACD is very good; I like the unofficial DVD-A better for its Alan Parsons engineered original Quadrophonic tracks.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John) is very good to excellent as is Slow Hand (Eric Clapton). Derek and the Dominos (also EC) is a nice rendition of a classic recording.

I hope that you player is also capable of DVD-Audio. With so little software available for either format, one needs to cover all of the bases.

IMO, I think that SACD is the better format. Not because of the sound, but because of the way DVD-Audio does tracking. I HATE the fact that it puts extra space between tracks while it does its thing (and I can physically hear the player mechanism during this silence). SACD does not do this.

I bought a car with a DVD-A player last year so I've started to hunt down some titles. Donald Fagen's "Morph the Cat" is clearly the audio champ of the bunch, but it's not his best work musically. Steely Dan's "Gaucho" is very, very good and it works well as a surround mix. My favorite sleeper disc is "Toy Matinee" - some really amazing studio work there and the mix is fantastic.

I'm trying to find a good copy of Dark Side that doesn't cost a fortune...just have to keep looking I guess...

Bought first quad system in '72 a 15 watt/ch Sansui qr1500,Pioneer quad 8track player and 4 small good speakers. Placed it in my loft and listened to Q8's of Floyd ds,Santana vanseri,Hot Tuna ,Jeff Beck,Steve Miller etc, etc, etc.A lot of years and systems have come and gone but the sound was fascinating enough to sink my heart into more upscale quadraphonic equipment that allows one to twist, tinker and record.Today my quad system includes 2 Akai 1730Dss quad RtR's,Sansui's QRX6500,QRX6001,QR1500,Akai mtx 55 4ch. amp. and always looking for more quad RtR tapes to lite up my Met and 4313's.

Hi Peter, How do I tell if the SACD disc is Multi Ch?

I have just one Mobile Fidelity SACD, Patricia Barber-"Cafe Blue" and it plays on all of my CDPs. When I use the player that is SACD capeable there is a great deal more content easily heard from this recording.
I have played it side by side in both a regular CDP and then on the SACD player, smae exact system, and the difference is night and day.

PF Dark Side of the Moon is a favorite here and I do wonder if the SACD version would be worth finding?

Hi Gary,

" How do I tell if the SACD disc is Multi Ch?"

my Pioneer has an options menu where I can choose
<Multichannel - 2 channel - CD>
Unfortunately you do not always know before whether the disk is produced in multichannel or not. so some SACDs will only reproduce two channels in which mode ever.

"I do wonder if the SACD version would be worth finding?"

As I had an often used LP before it was worthwhile. :)
It might be worth to look for the DVD-A version as TD has pointed out (post 6). Here over the pond it seems to be impossible to get it.

I heard that the digital out is disabled to keep you from making digital copies, "perfect copies" which are not subject to the generational loss of taped analogue copying.

On my multimode OPPO disc player, I use
analogue out to the stereo CD ins of my receiver,
Direct 6 out to the Direct 6 ins for SACD and such, and
optical out to optical in for DVDs (receiver does Dolby and DTS).

Lots of wiring back there! :D

Thanks for the musical suggestions!

3 recent MC DVDA/SACD's of note:

Bonnie Raitt, "Nick of Time"; One of the better uses of 5:1 for effect that I've heard. It brings the band out into the room nicely and the SQ is VERY good. Occasional FX in the surrounds are nicely done, not over-bearing.

Miles Davis, "Kind Of Blue"; You're hardly aware that it's 5.1 until you switch to 2-ch. Again, it brings the band out into the room, surrounds are only used for "presence" information and are not noticeable. Very good SQ on this one too.

George Harrison: Live in Japan; Japanese import. Very good live SQ and use of surrounds, but lacking in any real bass or LFE. Front weighted, surrounds used very little.

Great Organs in Paris /France:

1.
Church: St. Sulpice, Paris
Organist: Michael Murray
Music: Marcel Dupré, César Franck, Charles-Marie Widow
Label: Telarc, 2002

Mainly symphonic music composed for organ.
Fo me it is too loud over long passages, some may like it.

2.
Church: Notre-Dame, Paris
Organist: Olivier Latry
Music: Transcritions from Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Berlioz, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev
Label: Deutsche Grammophon "Midnight at Notre-Dame", 2004

Very different and some well known pieces of music. For me the last piece "Bach: Chaconne from Partita BWV 1004" is most impressive, as loud and fully registered parts change with very gentle parts in a very musical way. This recording obviously shows the necessity to record in the night without urban noise.

I am curious:

I do not know whether my Pioneer DV-575 is playing the DVD "Bee Gees, One Night Only" in Dolby 5.1 or DTS. Or is it the same??
(Btw. nice concert ;) .)

When I play "Sting, ... Nothing Like The Sun" the player and receiver are displaying DTS.
When I play "The Everly Brothers, Reunion Concert" the player and receiver both are displaying DOLBY D(igital).
All indications are correct.

But when I play the mentioned Bee Gees the indication is permanently Dolby D(igital). The DVD is capable of this. But the the case has a big header

"dts DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND".

The disk itself has a print "Dolby digital" and "dts".

I am using the optical input all the time.

Is there a misconception or do I miss the right switch?

On all the discs I have that do Dolby & DTS, there is a setup option where you choose which playback mode before you start playing the disc. Is it defaulting to Dolby in spite of attempts to choose DTS? There is also a DTS mode that comes through the multi-channel outputs.

I've been collecting DVDs and playing them through a high-end 7.1 HT system for about a year.

For the most part, multi-channel recordings are a pure dissapointment. Some exceptions apply, however.

A recent David Gilmore (Pink Floyd) live recording is a notable exception, I suppose.

I hate dealing with the movies. Some are 5.1, 7.1, DTS, Dolby, Stereo only and my receiver (Onkyo 7.1 135WPC) plays each very differently so unles you have it set up for the correct recording, the sound is poor. It took me weeks of reading the receiver manual to allow me to operate even the simplest of functions.

Thank you! :bouncy: Now is running DTS.
Setup option before you start - that's it.
[As my interest is the sound only most of times I started without a screen and missed this option. :( ]

Acknowledged. I made a low budget entry for getting experience. :D

OT but related :bs: :
I wonder how I can apply these cable stands (china or best in gold although very expensive for the moment ... ) in back of my receiver to get all of these cables properly cleared up??? :rotfl:

A forumite recommended "Das Mikrofon Vol.II" by TACET. This CD gives comparable recordings of condensor and ribbon mics with omni-directional, cardioid and figure-of-eight characteristic, dated 1947 until today.

Additionally the first half of an hour is a wonderful jazz concert by some proponents of the current German jazz scene, the Georg Rox Quartett.

On SA-CD.net there is a thread called
Thread: List of the Original QUAD Recordings - SACD Wishlist? (http://www.sa-cd.net/showthread/34112/34112/y#34112) .
It starts with a l_o_o_o_n_g list of four channel recordings released as SQ, QS, CD4, Q4 and Q8 linked from
Quadraphonic Discography
(http://members.cox.net/surround/quaddisc/quadindx.htm)
SQ and QS are matrix encoded and can be played back with a modern multichannel receiver switched to DOLBY. It is not exactly what has been intended in the studio but it often gives a reasonable sound stage. You will not necessarily need the original LP as it might be that the matrixed four channel information is still present in a rereleased CD, as these quadro releases have been stereo compatible.
I have one SQ-LP and it works.

In the WWW there are discussions about it.

In a chunk of borrowed LPs I found in near mint condition :) :

SANTANA Caravanserai

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41BHYB7N65L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

There exists a LP release as Quadro SQ version: Columbia PCQ-31610 (SQ) or CBS Q-65299 (SQ).
I have the stereo version CBS S-65299.
When playing the latter with Dolby there is a amayzing surround sound. Presumably there is no difference between the quadro and stereo version?

I definitely prefer this approximate Quadro against the stereo playback.

Caravanserai is rereleased as CD version and as remastered CD version.
There is a (in the meantime) high priced SACD version, which is announced as stereo.
It is open to conjecture how these versions will behave.

Any comments?

2009 special digitally remastered and expanded two disc (CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD) 35th anniversary edition of the veteran British Hard Rockers' 1974 album comes with a crisp new remaster, and a host of collectable extras. The CD features the original album remastered, plus a clutch of tracks remixed by Glenn Hughes at Abbey Road Studios especially for this release. The DVD contains the original Quad mix of the album presented in both 5.1 surround sound and stereo. Stormbringer was the ninth studio album by Deep Purple, originally released in November 1974. (and featuring the Mark 3 line-up of the band that included David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass) this album, much more prominently featured the soul and funk elements that were only hinted at on previous album Burn. AMBISONICS is a British invention by Michael Gerzon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Gerzon) in the early seventies. It has been developed at the University of York, there is a good page as entry point:
http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/mustech/3d_audio/welcome.html

AMBISONICS is still under interest although the patent has ended. It uses at least one four channel microphon and can be decoded to as many channels as desired. Possible solutions are stereo format (UHJ-format) and 5.1 format (G-format):

Ever heard The Who "Live at Leeds" from an ordinary CD switched to Dolby surround?
I suspect it is a matrix quadro recording, the guitars a better to distinguish. Anyway the two extra speakers in the rear deliver sound.
Don't tell this record of the Who delivers only little bass - use a sub! They are the Who!

It is not due to close miking but due to the good merging of sound and room with the Ambisonic recording technique.

Every other album that I have that's been made into a DVD-A sounds much better than the original except for this one. I am of the opinion that George Martin can't do anything worth shit without John Lennon sitting beside him and I am totally disappointed with the effort.

I have the SACD version. It cost an arm and a leg, but this has always been one of my favorites. It sounds best using Logic 7 processing and 7.1 surround. It still sound like the 70s, but this is 70s sound at its best.

J.S.Bach: "Christmas Oratorio" BWV248
by The Netherlands Bach Society,
Museum Catharijneconvent
produced December 2002
Multichannel SACD, hybrid

IMHO a very lively recording with clear voices and a homogenious choir.
It is worth to read the reviews on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Oratorio-Bwv-248-Veldhoven/dp/B0000B1A23/ref=sr_1_37?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1249501520&sr=8-37).

It seems to be pricey but you get two CDs, a 2/3 inch thick booklet, all within a dark wine red box - nicely made.

A concert filmed in Chicago 2005. Due to the video track it is not a DVD-A as with "Stupid Dreams" but in DTS (and PCM).
A good mix with only little audiences noise. Strong bass fundament, dominating drum set, melancholic, powerful, psychodelic.

On disc 2 there is a live recording from the German TV show Rockpalast by the WDR with "Futile" and "Radioactive Toy" (PCM).

- And the "Cymbol Song" is very nice indeed. Choose DTS, use a sub. :)

I don't have a copy with a sticker, but - it sounds glorious through the Emotiva in Direct mode ... Another good music tip you've given us!

I just got an NTSC/Region 0 DVD of Bryan Ferry's Bete Noir tour (from Berlin, '88-89) - and its got a 5.1 mix ... Its not Roxy, so no Manzanera, Mackay or Paul Thompson, of course, but otherwise its VERY nice! If you like his music, its a must have!

The Average white Band is a Scottish funk and R&B band.
"Pick up the peaces" reached #1 in the US chart.

During this concert in montreaux the musicians are performing with a minimum stage show. Screen changes are slow, the musicians are well watchable and listenable.

It is a DVD with 5.1tracks for DOLBY and DTS.
And then there is a track wit PCM (48kHz, 16bit):
My receiver with optical connection indicates Dolby PLII with Left and Right only. But all five + one channels are working! :hmm: D VD-A?
The player shows in its set-up menue Audio-DVD, Video-DVD is blanked. With the remote control I can switch between Dolby, DTS and PCM.

The Emotiva is gone but even the Yamaha receiver (RX-V2095) does amazing things
when I flip it into "External Decoder" mode and take the 6 channel direct signal right off the Oppo (DV-981HD - not a blue ray player)...

Regular discs (like the Tom Dowd 2 disc remaster - The Allman Brothers Band - The Fillmore Concerts)

Intristingly there is an amazing gentle surround effect effect when switching to DOLBY PLII without disturbing the sound balance.

The sound quality of this CD as a whole is not as good as Bryan Ferry "Boys and Girls" on SACD. I'm wondering whether it is due to mediocre studio work or is it due to the 14 bits (2 lost) when a HDCD is played on a non HDCD player.
Anybody knows?

I orderewd an AVALON CD without HDCD and not remastered:

1. The cover picture is slightly smaller.
2. The colours are not so intense.
3. The music is not so loud.
4. The music does not sound so compressed, an "s" is more natural and clean.
5. When listening in Dolby PLII I do not miss the SACD multichannel.
(compared to the HDCD version in a normal 16bit player.)

There are not many titles under SACD that appeals to me. I saw one Sony DVD player with SACD capability going for £40.00 (buy now) but it’s the titles that concern me. There is little classical music SACD and hardly any film scores to choose from on ebay.

Is the format currently still active or has it gone under with only what’s left to buy from?

Well only one title I’ve found on page 8 Titanic the audio description is pretty vague. “Multi” Multi what Multi 2 channel or 6channel?

After looking though 16 pages and only a few titles that made say WOW out loud I get the impression this is dead format, just like dtsCD are dead now for buying.

I hardly buy standard CD with 2channel unless the price is cheap.

Just looked for some dtsCD and only 1 page is listed. I only have a few dtsCD and I’m pretty pissed off with dtsCD giving up a few years back with only a few hundred titles, not even close to what LP or compact disc, is now.

There is little classical music SACD

Actually, just over half of all SACD releases are classical.

Is the format currently still active or has it gone under with only what’s left to buy from

While it is true that the format hasn't been popularly adopted, there are still new titles being released. So, yes, it is still active.

“Multi” Multi what Multi 2 channel or 6channel?

What do you mean when you say "Multi 2 channel"? What would that even be? SACD supports 5.1 multichannel playback; not all titles include full 5.1 mixes, though I believe the vast majority do.

Yeah I noticed that but I have also noticed in the past some CD labelled Dolby Surround

The label for Titanic says 5.1 channel
http://www.xpoit.com/img/images/Item/381/m_avatar.jpg

So the format is still kicking then. It’s hardly got any good titles to get me, jumping at it. More film scores and I might take the plunge.

The STAR TREK Nemesis score might be SACD stereo matrix surround? They have to label it more clearly is it 2.0 / 2.1 / 3.0 / 3.1 / 4.0 / 4.1 / 5.0 / 5.1?

I have DVD audio disc Holst The Planets that is only 4.1 front left right stereo surrounds and LFE.1 no centre mix!

Look along the top right of the picture just below the Dolby digital logo the text says 5.11004. 5.1 meaning its 6channel when in fact its only 5channel. It also states this on the label below "5.1 Dolby digital AC-3". Its still a good listen I was playing it earlier this morning.

http://pixhost.info/avaxhome/6c/9b/00129b6c_medium.jpeg

Some dtsCD tracks only have front left/right with stereo surrounds and LFE.1 it depends on the engineering mixer and the artist what they want? Some could even come as 2channel without even warning the customer, you’re better off with 2channel CD than paying four times the amount.

Like I said in my post - I have bought a number of SACDs for between $10 and 15.
Sure, there are some out of print/collectables that sell for more - so, I don't buy those!

The RCA Living Stereo is well documented as 3 microphone (actual 3 channel) recordings from the 50s -
they do have some tape hiss but the music is excellent. Do a search to read the other thread on the Lansing list
about RCA Living Stereo for more info on them ... they are famous.

SACD takes special players to decode - My two OPPO DVD players did it, my Harman Kardon did not,
but the HK does HDCD, as do the two OPPO players. Of course the OPPOs do DVD/DVD-A and all of that medium.

I noticed some SACD going for $95.00 ouch that is rarely steep!

I seem to recall reading in one history of film sound mixing multi microphone recoding techniques as general topic in Tom Holman article.

I doubt the two recent players I have Phillips BDP5000 or the Sony BDP-S550 would cater for SACD :( I didn’t see any SACD logo in the manual instructions? I doubt even firmware of SACD can be uploaded?

Still that Sony DVD player I saw for £40.00 I think it’s a model from early 2000’s as I remember seeing one around a friends sisters home, the logo that is, thou we were only playing DVD.

If I can remember I might buy it around late spring time. I doubt it will be going anywhere.

And, of course, the DRM requirements that you can't output the SACD in the digital form - its got to be analog. Of course, if its a dual mode disc you CAN output the standard CD stream in digital format - just not the SACD data. Thats a Sony requirement.

Yes, which frankly sucks because if you have better DAC's in an external component, you're still limited to using the internals on your SACD player. :( Definite point of contention on my part....

Thinking out load!

I honestly can’t see what the deal is with HDMI lead? It looks like glorified scaled down scart lead with only 19 pins. I’m sure the same thing can be down with scart leads only the inputs on AVR would soon be choc-a-block full of scart leads.

I hope I don’t run into the same issues that most others have had with these HDMI leads, in regarded to audio handshake between the player and the AVR. As you already know I don't have a new generation AVR that supports HDMI input yet.

Well, if you don't have HDMI TV and an HDMI receiver and an HDMI video player trying too communicate with each other,
you really have no hands-on with it - so, you can't comment knowledgeably about that technology and its problems ... :crying:

I mean theory is fine, as theory goes -
but the issues of audio output being dropped when the HDMI handshake glitches -
and video dropouts and all of the rest of that ... stuff ... what fun!

Well there’s always the firmware to fall back on for updates when the units don’t talk to each other. I see myself buying a new AVR soon could be spring maybe autumn?

I’d never buy expensive HDMI cables. The one I got supplied with Phillips bluray player looks to be around £8.00.

What’s the deal with these CD players that have what looks like weight placed down on the disc? I saw a few under SACD listing on ebay. Is it to prevent the spindle motor from making high pitch noises?

In comparison to the upper one the piano has too much a mechanical tempus variation to express the tension within the Andante IMHO.

At our last meet, JBLAddict brought Beck's Sea Change disc for a spin. I believe it was the SACD.

It sounded spectacular. We actually sat and listened to music without the usual slack-jawed commentary for at least three, maybe four cuts. The high level of mixing and mastering was evident from the first bar.

I found the DVD-A of Sea Change for a bargain price and snapped it up. It includes some videos as well as the surround mixes. Very, very nice--one of the best discs.

It is a bit melancholy at times, since it's a "break up" disc ("you're dead to me..."), but it's magic in your surround system. If an album of this calibre couldn't make surround recordings commercially viable, then SACD and DVD-A didn't have much of a chance.

Highly recommended. :bouncy:

I mentioned this album was coming a few months back in another thread - its the 3rd album by Caravan - the 40th Anniversary Edition of The land of Grey and Pink.
40 years?? That's hard to believe - then again, it had been out a few years when I heard of it stateside ...

Its a 3 disc package - the original recording, cleaned up, another disc of extra bonus tracks, and a 3rd DVD disc with the album tracks remixed/remastered in 5.1 surround (DVD-A) and some videos from the Beat Club. The price through Amazon US was steep, but I ordered through Amazon UK and got it for about $24 US shipped.

I had a chance to play the surround mix disc Friday and its quite nice! The surround mix is credited to Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree fame, he apparently went back to the original tapes and reworked from there to get quite a nice surround mix with all of the instruments well placed and clear - a very full rich sound - and very enjoyable if you like the Canterbury kind of progressive music! Steve Wilson has also been involved with creating surround sound remixes of a number of the classic King Crimson albums

Packaging is sort of wonky - a two tray digipack with the 3rd disc of DVD/Surround just slipped into a card board sleeve. But I'm here for the music, and its great, even better for the nice price.

If I recall, I just saw Avalon at Best Buy when the SACD first went on sale, and bought it new,
even though I couldn't play SACDs at the time (I'm a big Roxy Music fan and saw them a 4-5 times in the 70s,
plus on the endless Avalon tour around 82-83 and the 2000 reunion tour). I had no idea the price had gone crazy -
its not their best album, but it is a nice mix of Avalon, plus it has the surround mix of Always Unknowing -
a great extra song I only had on a collection disc before.
I also have the SACD version of Bryan Ferry's "Boys and Girls", bought that off Amazon for $13 back in 2008.

I image all of his albums have extensive studio tape to work with.

That said, the entire Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry catalog was completely remastered around 1999.
Since I only had the original vinyl I bought the whole catalog of Remastered CD when they did it,
in the mini-LP obi-sash versions.
All of the remastered albums sound hugely better than the original CD releases do.
Bryan Ferry has always been a studio obsessive - listen to any of the albums he did albums from Avalon forward.
Mamouna is one of my favorites - http://www.amazon.com/Mamouna-Bryan-Ferry/dp/B0000087GY/
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamouna

The recording sessions were legendary for the number of people he recorded that are mixed into those songs,
and the number of years he kept reworking the music. At some point he took some of those songs, trimmed them down,
and released them as Mamouna - but the original studio version is available on some torrent sites as unreleased album Horoscope.

The original Avalon CD was terrible and desperately needed a remaster!

Thanks very much for the tip list ...

I already had a couple of those, but hadn't relistened to them
since I swapped that borken Harman AVR7300 for the Integra pre-processor.

If you like Dire Straits, find a copy of Knopfler's Shangri-La on SACD - a very nice mix and quite pleasant from the chime-y opening sounds of 5:15AM and on as it swells and swings all the way through - quite nice!

Beck was new to me- for some reason I hadn't taken to him in the past, but if Sea Change is much different than his other work, thats why. I listened to the MFSL (Stereo) recording - it has a nice use of space in the music, yet a deep mix - some of it reminds me of early Elton John (Madman Across the Water) with the orchestral touches, other stuff has a hint of Nirvana - VERY cool ... I did find a surround mix on the web and that's very cool also - will have to take some time for long listens to really appreciate it.
Got some Miles Davis on the way - In A Silent Way - its kind of ambient jazz with a pre-Mahavishnu John Mclaughlin on guitar - the stereo disc is one of my favs - but I've never heard the surround version!

I'll have to hunt down the Fleetwood Mac -

Thanks for the tips!!

I've been making a list for a long time, and acquired almost all of my must have discs.

Shangi-la has been on there for a while and I haven't pulled the trigger for some reason, but think I will. Peter Gabriel --UP, just won two days ago on ebay for $41 and the reviews on SA-CD.net for this one are gushing so I'm amped to hear it.

Billy Joel, The Stranger is on the list and had excellent MCH reviews. Also been one fence with Floyd DSTOM mostly for the sonics as I'm not a big fan of their music so never purchased it.

Beck Sea Change is unlike anything he previously produced, the break up disc as TiD stated is pretty deep to the soul if you like that sort of thing, which I do very much.

While I'm listing music, the others I have that are pretty good include Genesis- We Can't Dance, Talking Heads--Little Creatures, Police-Every Breath You Take, Ryan Adams--Gold, and Natalie Merchant--Tigerlily (which is one of my top five albums period, talent extraordinaire!)

Miles Davis Kind of Blue on SACD is widely acclaimed and it really lives up to the billing.

I keep looking for Avalon but the $77 is sold for last week is the cheapest I've ever seen and that's past my threshold.

Been on a multichannel kick lately, so I some new and used discs from Amazon:

Got Stevie Ray Vaughn - Texas Flood SACD - wasn't so impressed - sound was ok stereo.
Also Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Raise Your Voices Higher - amazing separation, some nice tracks - but not quite my cuppa ...

On another day I ordered:
The Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach - SACD and
Elton John - Madman Across the Water - SACD

Eat a Peach is nice, and I'll def spend more time with it over the weekend,
but Madman is a flat gorgeous mix - I was so impressed with Elton's separation and mixes
I just ordered three more early Elton album SACDs - Elton John - Elton John; Tumbleweed Connection,
and Honky Chateau (thanks for the heads up, Hoerninger).

Still looking for other surround sources ... when its right, its a lot of fun!

Recently I purchased Elton Johns "Honky Chateau" as SACD for a reasonable price. The music is produced 1972, e.g.Rocket Man. It makes intensive use of the four channels and is very enjoyable.

EAT A PEACH is very enjoyable as well. It has a decent surround mix as "The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East" on SACD.

The FILLMORE concert as DTS surruond nix makes use of four dicrete channels for the instruments which I prefer with this kind of music.

It offers a real 5.1 Sound with different channels and a center. The sound is brilliant and worth the little wxtra money IMHO. The booklet is quite nice. It is a multichannel hybrid SACD, so the disc is playable in any CD-player.

...Live at Ronnie Scott's.

The man, the legend, the reality... at 63 (at the time in 2007) Jeff Beck shows why he has the chops to destroy every young wonder-thing guitar player out there. This is an incredible musical set on Bluray with DTS TrueHD 5.1 surround. (There's also a Dolby Surround track and PCM stereo.) The 21 song tracklist is both a Beck hit list and a "hit list" for every other wanna-be guitar player who's going to get a cap popped right in their arse if they attempt to play like this.

The audio is really splendid, made to be more that just a simple audience/ambience environment, though that is certainly there. But played at the right volume *LOUD* the instruments separate themselves and take up positions in the room that are palpable and powerful and intimate. I actually thought about moving the chairs out of the Two Jims Theatre and putting in a round table and a couple of chairs, with a small red-shaded light and some cocktails--it just felt like I was at a first or second row table at Ronnie Scott's.

The video quality is a bit hit and miss, as there are times when it's not as sharp as I'd like it, but there are many, many moments of absolute clarity. Close ups of Jeff''s hands at work on his Fender Stratocaster are mind blowing. The looks, smiles, and respect shown between Beck and his bandmates, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jason Rebello, and Tal Wilkenfeld are priceless. A few cool guests appear for vocals, and in one case vocals and guitar. Seeing and hearing a couple of Yardbirds bandmates together for a pair of songs is not a bad thing.

This is a Jeff Beck milestone captured in a wonderful moment, a self-built monument for all time.

How to Listen is a desktop software application developed by the Harman Internationa (http://harman.com/)l R&D group for the purpose of training and selecting listeners used in audio product research, development, and testing. The software consists of a number of training exercises where different kinds of timbral, spatial and dynamic distortions commonly found within the recording and audio chains are simulated and added to music.
The listener’s task is to identify, classify or rate these distortions according to a number of well-defined perceptual attributes and scales. The software automatically adjusts the difficulty of each training task based on the listener’s performance.

Chicago 1981 DVD/CD (2012)

New mix including DTS 5.1
Very astonishing mix, Muddy Waters and (some of) the Rolling Stones jump right into your listening room. I don't remember ever have had such an intimate listening impressing.
But instead of reading my humble english better look here:

Agreed - I got that DVD package a week ago and it is stunning ... Video and Audio!
Can't believe how small the stage was with all of them on it!

What an amazing evening that was for the attendees - glad they recorded it!

Some time ago the soundtrack of the film „Lawrence of Arabia“ has been newly recorded and released as HDCD. If you listen to this music there is hardly anything to miss and it sounds wonderful. Interestingly this CD has been released in Dolby Surround, very unusual for a CD.
You may wonder is surround sound an advantage in a screenplay taking place in a desert where there is no echo. Yes it is. When listening to the music you get the impression of depth in front and back, the desert surrounds you.

If you know the film and its music you may judge the new release of the soundtrack as smooth and gentle. The original soundtrack is released in stereo. It is more rough and it puts you right into the scenes of action. You might see the film only by listening to the music.

The LP has always been one of my favorites. I was looking for a multichannel dvd.

The local dealers had no good offers. Amazon custumer reviews were totally mixed, and the sellers can't distinguish Audio DVD from Video DVD.
Finally I got this one:

Format: PAL, Special Edition, Surround Sound
Sprache: Englisch (Dolby Digital 2.0), Englisch (Dolby Digital 5.1), Englisch (DTS 5.1)
ASIN: B000WMDNNW

Within the menu I choose "Songs" as I am not so much interested in the film itself.
It is really worth the suround sound.
The blu-ray is said to be even better.

I don't see this listed here, but I find this disc fabulous. ( DTS HD MA ). Jack Bruce's bass playing is very tight not to mention Ginger Baker & Eric Clapton's performance. I used this disk to audition my new JBL nightlife sub ( on my kitchen HT, the 4th one in a 2 person household, all JBL ) LOL. Very nice Bluray indeed. Also on Bluray, The Eagles " Farewell 1 Concert " & Garry Moore's " Blues for Jimi ", which I also rate 5 Stars. Supertramp's " Live in Paris '79 " is surprisingly good considering the technology of the time. On the crappy mix front, Joe Satriani's " Satchurated " live in Montreal Bluray, the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix I found to be unlistenable. Switched to 5.1 mix and found it so so. Recently I am buying Blurays as my source material, the DTS HD MA just blows me away. One can own countless LPs and CDs and never have time to play them all.

You get a new years concert with many well known titles by the Strauß-family (Carmen-Quadrille, Kaiserwaltzer, Radetzki-Marsch ...).
It is a very well performed recording - and there is no applause at all. Another highlight is the surround sound - there is no hint on the cover.

Been a fan of Bryan Ferry for many years - couple weeks back I notice a new live concert was available on Amazon - filmed on July 25, 2011 at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Lyon, France. Found a good price for the Bluray version, and it arrived today - It also includes the Making of Olympia video - a 28 min interview/behind the scenes of his previous studio Album that was available only on the CD/DVD Special Edition of that release. Its nice, but irrelevant to this release But on to the Concert Footage. Its a 5 channel DTS release - very nice sound, tho I didn't see a dedicated bass/sub channel to it, but it plays well on all 5 surround speakers in my system ... No sign of the Roxy Music performers, its Colin Goode on Piano, Neil Hubbard on Guitar, Andy Newmark Drums (and Tara Ferry also on drums!), and a number of newer folks. Tempo is up a bit, but there's a lot of music done well live - lots to like of you like the man and his music!

Bruce Botnick re-did the Doors albums with 5:1 DVD-As. Excellent!

Bob Dylan's "Blonde On Blonde" on 5:1 SACD, cool. One can Mute all the channels except the center channel so you'll only hear Dylan (trying) singing.

Miles Davis- "Sketches Of Spain" & "Kind of Blue". Yes, please.

Handels' "Messiah" on Harmonia Mundi with 5:1 SACD- phenomenal recording!

The Getz/ Gilberto SACD.

The Stones London Records catalog on SACD.

The Beatles released their catalog with the remastered versions, which both the stereo and mono box sets are very good. They never released them in SACD/ DVD-A but you you can find some of the songs on the DVD box set "Anthologies". Those are in 5:1.

The David Bowie "Live" is a good 5:1 DVD-A.

Avoid the Band's "Music From Big Pink" DVD-A. Robbie Robertson tried real hard but the songs seem to loose their "glue" from the original.

Blood Sweat and Tears, Child is Father To The Man is available now from Audio Fidelity. It's fantastic. Great use of the surround channels and you won't wish for more bass. The sound quality is so good that it's hard to believe this was made in 1968. There are no hit songs here though. Audio Fidelity discs tend to go out of print pretty quickly, so get a copy now, while the cost is still reasonable.

Sea Change is now available in Pure Audio format on Bluray disc - at a reasonable price.
Like the SACD, It sounds spectacular!

http://smile.amazon.com/Sea-Change-Blu-ray-Audio-Beck/dp/B00ELVVAG2/r

:bouncy:

In a few days, next month, Hamburg will come into the focus of the daily news.
I would like to point to the new „Elbphilharmonie“ in Hamburg, a concert hall which opened in january this year.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbphilharmonie

It is said that its acoustics can compete with any other hall in the world.
I'm still searching for a outstanding multichannel recording made in this hall.
On Youtube you can find some stereo recordings made in the „Elphi“, for example this one:

I've been listening to the Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, the Phat Pack recording in multi-channel. Big band music is not usually my thing, but this is an exception, because it sounds so fabulous. If you have some older relatives over and you want them to understand why expensive gear is worth the cost, this is what you would want to play. Big and bold and technically flawless.
