View Full Version : Satelite/Cable TV induced hummmm

While getting my 6230 amp all worked out, I had been working on it near the TV, so tapped into the outputs of the satelite box to use sirius as a source. While trying to reduce hum, I finally noticed that with a different source, the humm wasnt a problem...then it hit me, I can remember people complaining about some kind of humm that was injected when satelite or cable was the source, and a nifty little filter to prevent this. I have searched all my old files in vain, anyone heard of this before? seems like the filter was made out of those little things that convert cable tv cable to screw on leads or something....On the other hand, maybe I have finally cracked.

Thanks,
Russellc

Your link looks interesting, but I'll have to read it later. In the meantime:

By the way, you can fix a lot of ground loop problems by properly grounding all of your components. Get a length of wire, and connect together one screw from the chassis of each component. Sometimes it helps to also connect your ground network to the shielding of the coaxial cable.

Hey, Russellc...

Another goal would be to get all your devices onto the same AC circuit (i.e., same ground). This is always good practice and something I learned in the SR world. This will alleviate many GL's, and will lower your noise floor considerably.

With my TV so distant from the system components, I had to run a long 12 gauge AC cord into the system rack. Boy-howdy did it improve (remove...) things.
