I have one that looks a lot nicer than that one. For sale that is. Make me an offer. I always compared them across the board with the 6290.

The Urei 6500 makes GREAT sub bass. But, if it breaks, getting parts can be an issue.

However, I have heard and worked with this amp running four JBL 2226H,s, 2 per channel as booth subs in a club, VERY clean, plenty of power, and punch, with great definition, but not hard sounding, as the comparable Crown PSA-2 can be sometimes.

I always despise the fact that our fav speaker manufacturer took that company, and put them out to pasture, UREI was a FAMOUS brand and historical to the recording industry too, and should still be around. Heck, UREI Digital processing, if they could do it with DBX, why not UREI?

Hey Scott, I thought you would like this:

They re-manufacture the old Urei 1176 compressor. I have an original, but their re-pops look pretty good. I heard they're made in S Korea, though.

They do make software as well.

They should get into the amps and re issuing monitors, but I bet it's either not profitable for them, or maybe patent problems. Who knows?

Question, is a prominent forum member here related to the fabled company?

The 6500 is huge!
Saw one on Ebay a while ago but it looked beat up.

Hello Norski.
I was'nt necessarily looking to buy one, was really looking to see what people thought of them & how they compared to the 62xx models. Thanks anyway maybe someone else may be interested.

Welcome to the forum!

Hi Krunchy,
I meant rack spaces and weight. Haha!
I honestly don'y know if I've ever heard one. I'd bet we all have but didn't see them in the rack.

Scott's description makes them sound very appealing. Yes, I'd like one!:)

Hey Krunchy,
The Crown PS200 was so good I bought another, cheaper price, also mil surplus, and looks brand new. So 2 are better than one. LOL.

I have one with my 9844s not in my home, and the latest one is in my apt., powering my EV Sentrys. It's really a great amp :)

I'm pretty set for amps well into the future I believe.

Ur avatar makes me wanna get my King Krimson vinyl out.

Howdy Skywave,

Well I gotta say you inspired me to look into those crowns, I picked one up and I really like the sound of it, nice and mellow, very full IMO. Two is better than one :D glad to hear you got a good deal on it :applaud: , who doesnt love a good deal?
King Crimso... I always liked the art work on the album cover, not my fav KC album though, lean more towards their later material esp. w/Adrian Belew.

Enjoy!

......... I have an original, but their re-pops look pretty good. I heard they're made in S Korea, though.

This is partially incorrect. They're built in Scotts Valley, CA. I worked with UA last year for a while on the test and alignment bench. They have a Vintage line of tube mic pres and compressors. They also still hand-build the UA LA-2 compressors _exactly_ like the originals. And I mean _exactly_. They even use NOS tube sockets, point to point wiring, and the original designs of transformers. Heck, even the mic transformers are sourced from Cinemag just as the originals were using original specs.

The only difference these days is that they use Mogami wire throughout all the gear they make. Each piece of wiring is hand-built, too. I believe they're set to announce an special 1176 - the Blue Stripe version - modeled on the original. The one they used to replicate the parts is from the collection of Jim Messina.

Back on the thread subject, I'd love to get one of those UREI amps to drive the 813s I have. I'd be looking more seriously if I didn't already have a big 'ol Hafler P500 that's doing the job.

Cheers,

David

Thanks for setting the record straight, David. I will promptly strangle my fellow engineer pal who told me that. So the whole line is made in the USA? If so, very good. It's OT, so may I PM you on that subject?
