I’m a big fan of the 60’s mid century designs put out by JBL. Having grabbed some good pictures of the C41 Angelus off an auction, I decided to have a go at reproducing my own.

http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl/specs/home-speakers/1960-c41.htm

I scaled up some measurements from the photos and basically arrived at a box: 5 3/4 h, 14 w, and 4 7/8 deep. The tricky part is the pushed in face, which I have at about 9/16 inches in at the center. I used ½ inch 9 ply plywood for the housing, covered in walnut veneer left over from some previous projects.

The little feet are 1 inch high and I tapered them myself on a wood lathe starting with ½ in round aluminum rod.

The crossover is an N7000 I rebuilt with all new caps, coils and l-pads.

I finally bought a pair of 2407H drivers to incorporate into an existing system. The goal was to turn a small tweeter horn with the same outside diameter as the existing ring radiators so I could swap them right in.
I worked up an oblate spheroidal waveguide contour using Hornresp.

The 2407H has a standard screw mount for a 1 inch driver. The actual diameter of the throat is only 7/8 so I used this as the horn throat.
I couldn’t come up with a source for a female threaded insert, so this pair is held in place with the aluminum straps in the pictures. They are quite secure and I used the straps to mount some push connectors.

They sound great. I haven’t taken any measurements other than plugging them in to the existing crossover, which has them coming in at about 10k. I was able to get them out fairly flat to somewhere past 20k without much equalization.

Thanks,
Yes I made this a number of years ago, it's more of a bench really. My wife liked it better when my hobby was small pieces of furniture. Whatever.:blah:

From a neighbor in Oregon....gorgeous work. Someday.....when my youngest is older, I want to get in the woodshop again like the old days....and produce some artwork with the beautiful JBL drivers. Unforunately, the really nice stuff is getting to be a small fortune because of ebay.
Love your posts and photos....keep us posted on any and all future projects..Pete

I just picked up some of these drivers, wish I had a wood lathe. :) Unfortuantly mine are going in back of a Eminence 10cx. Great work, I really like the C41 Angelus, I might have to look into some of 'em. I'm a sucker for the retro look :D

John, could you make me a pair of cabinets for the 075's?

The pictures and description are meant to encourage you to acquire a few tools, build some skills and try it yourself.

Still, I may build another pair or two after I finish a few other things. These will probably go to auction since it’s easier for me than trying to come up with an equitable price.

Hi John,

How do you like your 2407+horn compared to the 2403 you had before?

I am really happy with the 2407/horn combo. The performance is wonderful and I don't think I would switch back. It's a little hard to describe tweeters from 8k up as being smooth, but these have all the detail and twinkle but are a little less edgy.

How much eq did you add on top to get a flat response?

You really did a wonderful job. I keep drooling when looking at your productions (1200/900hz smith horns, H9800 and speaker, ...). This is all VERY impressive to say the least.

How much eq did you add on top to get a flat response?

I checked the eq on the digital crossover. I have a passive network between the upper midrange horn and the tweeters. The original network was for a 2405. It looks like I had to raise these up about 6db to get them even to where these were, a slight rise of about 2 db from 8 to 12k then flat from there out.
