what is the difference between the L-100s which say L-100, and the L-100s which says Century?

I have no idea.

However, searching either google or the search option above, there are more posts about L100s than all of JBL and Altec combined.

I am sure there has been a discussion about it on here in the past.

looks like starting in 1976 the "Century" portion was dropped from the name...

take a look at the home product Catalogs in the JBL Library... there have
been several visual and perhaps functional changes along the way, of which
I (personally) think the most significant are represented here, in the center two units:
