In the summer of 1970, Georgia had it's own Woodstock. Few know of the festival that rocked the little town of Byron Georgia halfway between Macon and Columbus in central Georgia. The lineup was monumental and equaled any rock festival any where. It took 10 years for the surrounding communities to come out of their shock from the onslaught of 300,000 people. I remember driving through the town of Roberta several years later and seeing for the first time the sign 'No shoes, no shirt, no food' in a local restaurant.
I remember very little of that music event, but the beer flowed, everyone shared roll your own cigarettes and the music was loud. WOW! Here's a little more on it.

I was at the first Altanta Rock Fest held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1969. Amazing what went on there. Grand Funks first public appearance, the Peace pill, hits of Orange sunshine shot from a 410 shootgun at daybreak, fire breathing dragons flying over the stage, Timothy Leary and his "Orange Juice" machine, Cocker coming on at the stroke of midnight with " Lets Go Get Stoned" and the announcement that Brian Jones had drowned in his pool. Those were the days! Janis, Led Zepplin, CTA, PG&E, Blood, Sweat and Tears w/Al Cooper, Johnny Winter and the list goes on and on and on. Missed Woodstock due to a departure time faux pax but made up for it later that summer at the West Palm Beach Pop Fest. and another low key event at Piedmont Park in hot 'Lanta. I remember it.........well, sorta!:D
Tho I missed the next years event with Hendrix, I did see him live in Atlanta in '69 or '70 with Vanilla Fudge, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, Heir Apparent, Blue Cheer and The Soft Machine. Got a few pics. with Poloroid "Swinger" before being escorted back to my seat by a rather large humaniod I chose to mind!
