My first was a 2110A, which I promptly coupled with a dynaudio horn tweeter in a ported cabinet....in 1979....6db filters:blink: Actually, sounded pretty decent at lower volumes....suprising....however within 2 years I was playing with 2235's, 2108's, E140's, horn/lens...:blah::blah::blah:....but in years I haven't seen a nice pair of those 2110's on ebay....emphasis on nice...if nothing for fuzzy memories, they would do ok in the shop/garage, with a tweeter...for FM radio, anyway....so what was your first JBL component??

A pair of Lancer 77's were my first JBL loudspeakers.

Shortly thereafter a pair of LE14A's were my first components.

It quickly got out of hand from there.

Bought my first pair in 1974. After listening extensively to the L200, I bought the Sovereign I S8R. Still have them today (in the bedroom) and listen to them near every night. Condition after all this time is an easy 9 out of 10. First components were D130's, 075's and 2400's in 1979. Those are long gone.

Used S-99's. They later survived a flood with water halfway up the cabinets, and JBL reconed the Le-14's for free!! I also built new cabinets for them at that time...

My first was a 2110A, which I promptly coupled with a dynaudio horn tweeter in a ported cabinet....in 1979...I went the other way...

My first JBLs were a pair of DIY S7s... then S7s + 2405s... then :blah: :blah:

Then I went over to Audax, Dynaudio, Focal, ScanSpeak, Seas.... etc. etc. for a decade or so and then back to JBLs...

I started in 1974 with L25 Primas and then grabbed L88 Plus on closeout with M12 expander kits in 1975. Shortly there after I mirror imaged the L100's then upgraded them to 4312A years latter. I found E-Bay got a pair of L80t3. From then on I have been trying new stuff ever since. New for me that is.

In 1982, I traded a pair of L150's for a DIY rig that consisted of 2205A's, 2397's with 2328/2327 adaptors, 2420's and 2405's. Included was a 5234 with 500hz and 800hz cards. I still have the 5234.

L36 Decades, new in 1976
bought with a Yamaha CR400 receiver (20w/ch but very clean) and a Philips 212 Turntable ...
Upgraded to a Thorens TT (w/SME arm) and later to a Denon DP45F table that I still use.
The Yamaha is in the guest room with the L36s (refoamed) - still sound great.

The fabulously efficient and musical 4663A, but instead of a 2370 it had a 2345, and a beautiful phenolic 2461 instead of a 2425. The whole system was mint. I should have tried the 2461 on a 2370. The 2345 was a bit of a turd. Then came 2370A's, 2225's, 2404's, etc. I still love the 2405H. The 4560BKA box is still a winner in my book; it never fails to deliver the goods.

I aquired a Fender Showman in my twenties. It had a JBL D140F in it. It didn't take me long to fall in love with the sound, efficiency and quality of JBL drivers.
I'm still enthralled!

I was working in a store that sold JBL so I knew I didn't want any of the little stuff. I had a nice Mac setup. I got a chance to buy a couple of JBL/Ampex theatre woofers a customer helped me build two C55 horns the store loaned me two 15 inch EV's all I could afford on top were used 500 altec horns and drivers and I built my crossovers out of almost motor run caps and wash machine solonoids and I had the Grateful Dead at my house. If the band down the block bothered me I'd just turned the music up. If they pissed me off I put on Normon Greenbaum and turned the music up and someone would come over to make peace in no time. When I'd get stoned sometimes I'd modify the crossovers till they were just right, but in the morning someone had messed my crossovers all up.

Greetings, All,

Back in the 1970's, I was playing in a 10 piece horn band, down in San Diego. We needed a better PA, and I scraped up enough money to buy a pair of Altec 816 boxes, loaded with JBL D130's, and 811B horns up top, with Altec 806A drivers. I quickly found out that it needed a REAL crossover, instead of the crappy little non-polarized cap that the seller gave me to protect the compression driver's diaphragm, Blew it up on the first set of the first night of use!!:biting::banghead: Had two monitors for myself, too, both with single K120's in them, and one 2105 in each cabinet, with no tweets at all.

But, I got a nice, sturdy crossover made, and after that, fell in deep lust with the clean, clear, and crisp sound of that system!! I would take them home, between gigs, and hook them up to my crappy Sansui 15 wpc quad receiver, and crank up the Tower of Power, Chick Corea, Chicago, BS&T, and Cold Blood!! Ohhhh, that system sounded good to me!! Later, I sold that system, and then kicked myself in the arse for making that mistake! Shortly thereafter, I wanted a really nice pair of speakers, as the ones I'd gotten with my Sansui, Dow Stereo housebrand "Apollo 600's", were a POS, and I wanted a JBL/Altec sound instead. Didn't have a ton of money, so I removed the crappy woofers from those POS "Apollo's", and replaced them with my K120s, and the mids with those 2105's. I added a soft dome tweeter from Peerless, and then couldn't understand why I could NEVER hear it!! Poor little bastard couldn't keep up with those JBL's!!!! :D:D;)

From there, I bought every JBL component that came my way, and a few from Altec, too, and here we are today, with me FINALLY getting an actual and complete, original JBL stereo speaker system, my first.... L300's!! I had some 4408's before that, but they had aftermarket cones in them, and no grills, so they don't count!! ;);):D:applaud: Take care, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

Hello Soundboy,

Good idea for a topic!

My first JBL was a 2235 which I made into a B380 type sub together with my version of a bx63.....for 6 channels for you guessed it future HT expansion in the early Dolby Surround/Prologic days. I never did find another five 2235 woofers.

Good idea for thread.

I worked at a retail appliance / stereo store from 1979 to 1992. As I learned about and heard all the different brands over the years, JBL was always my favorite. I never used the 50% employee discount, and bought a pair when I had the chance. Wish I would have got pair of L150A’s.

Last April when I was cleaning the basement – I hooked up an old pair of Technics bookshelf speakers I bought my wife when she was in collage. I was ready to put them in the trash – ripped mid range on one and beat up cabinets. I was literally carrying them out to the street for trash pick up, when for some reason as I was walking past my stereo I decided to hook them up and see what they sounded like.

I A/B them against my Bose 5.1 with powered sub ($1200 from Best Buy in 2002). It was amazing. The bookshelf speakers sounded so much better then the Bose. I had forgotten how good cabinet speakers sounded. The Bose were loud and filled the room nicely so I was happy. It took a side by side comparison to appreciate the difference.

Two weeks later I bought a pair of almost mint 4311’s from local vintage store. That started a domino effect and my current quest for bigger and better pro JBL’s.

All in the last 6 months.
Bought 4311’s.
Upgraded from Sony AV receiver to Carver separates.
Added pair of 4312A’s.
Rewired basement with 700 feet of video, audio cables and speaker wire.
Built custom sixteen shelf thru the wall component stand/storage.
Reconditioned and sold two pair of 4312A’s. I still have 5 more pair to finish.
Added Pair of 4671OK’s (two way’s - 15” with horn).
Pair of 4311’s that need reconditioning.

If I hadn’t hooked up the 25 year old Technics speakers that day, I would have never gotten the JBL bug.

Le14A's for a DIY which used Altec 511B horns and 802/8A's I think.
Horns were changed within 1 week. They sounded like I was at the

A buddy had some L100's and back in the day, they were like a revelation, none of us had squat for gear and they easily were way better than what we were using (I think my system at the time was a integrated Panasonic something). They get thrashed here, but I credit them with pointing me in the JBL direction, finally got that pair of 250ti's a few years later. Listening to Al Di Meola on them right now.

Ok - but this thread was about your first JBL COMPONENTS,
not factory speakers ... L100s are not components ...
2425s are components, 2123s are components, and 2245s -
those are components ...
(check back through the posts - most folks have posted drivers, not systems)

When I was playing with those 4320s (2215s and LE85-pro combo),
I got a pair of 2405 slots and built a crossover - what a revelation!

I'll confess. I stole an LE175DLH out of a friend's Mom's Harkness 001 system she had by the curb to give to the Goodwill. I think that was 1968. Honest, I don't remember how I got the D123 or the 12" Altec coaxial I have sitting in the closet. It must have been the weed.

D130s in 1962! Added a pair of 075s / N2400 XOs a few months later that I still have. Built the cabs to JBL specs. In those days, we thought the 030 system in a 6 cubic ft. enclosure (C35) was about as good as it got. :) MM
