Wow! This is alot of tedious work. Removing the foam from the back side of the cone while dealing with all the obstacles (i.e the basket) was quite a challenge. I used a scalpel with a tapered blade and basically had to slice off the foam all the way around (sort of like carving up a roast). You have to be careful not to slice into the paper cone beneath the layer of old adhesive.

The first stage of glueing the new surround on was quite challenging because the angle of the surround and cone were not wanting to match / adhere. (The surrounds were genuine JBL replacements from Speakerrepair.com and the diameters etc. are perfect) ...so once they stuck from the top-side I had to flip them over and fill-in glue from the back side (lots of glueing, smoothing,and wiping-off...this took me at least 3-4 hours). I let them cure overnight and glued the surround to the frame and installed the gasket this morning. This part went well and is quite easy. Tested them with a 30Hz tone and experience no vc issues.

Are there any tricks to getting that foam off the back side? (I read the thread where the speaker used is essentially the same woofer but for a 4313 or something like that...

Yes, to remove a new foam or "not to old" foam from the back cone is a hard job ! I did this at one of my LE 10 A`s. There was a different new foam at one driver. Terrible to remove ! And center it you must use different frequencies, not only 30 or 20 Hz. Maybe you hear a dismatch at higher frequencies (100-500 Hz).

I dont know what the guys here are gonna say

But i find pinching the foam and rolling the thumb an finger
is a good way too go
The right amount of pressure
And around you go
about 2 hours quicker that the way you described
I come up with this while trying to do a tweeter that was glued behind
But it will work for any driver
Best when it`s a bitch of a job
