View Full Version : What's on your JBL To-Do List?

Hi All,

OK, I thought I'd start a thread on something we all have in common - Too many JBL speakers in need of something and too little time to do it. Maybe we can commisurate, maybe we can encourage, maybe we can help out somehow. But let's build on our common interest about JBL stuff!

I put it in DIY because, well, we're trying to do it. However, even if you're going to use a professional to help get your JBL's back in shape, that's OK too. :D

No particular rules about the project - maybe just keep the list to your top 10 or top 20. If it's more than that, we can refer you to a counselor and addiction therapist

OK, I'll start:

1. 4333A's - refoam 2231/2235H's, replace foam insulation (:biting: ) installed by prior owner w/fiberglass (wouldn't pink look lovely? :bs: ), repaint w/JBL blue (anyone got some mixed up already?) and repaint slot horns black.

2. Olympus C50's - Sell or part out newly acquired set here or elsewhere depending on level of interest. Trying to figure out how to move them without damage. Wondering if I should keep LE85 for a L300 project.

3. L300's - Have 2 pairs of cabinets to refinish and then restock. Slowly coming around with most drivers, use 2231H vs 2235H for bottom? Have 1 pair of N3333 crossovers, want to try out the Giskard DIY Xover equivalent, looking into a charge coupled version. Also, gotta order the JBL Blue cloth from Zilch....

4. 2440/2309/2310 driver/horn/lens combo - continuing to mull over the possibiities of using these with the above speakers in lieu of the 2420/2312/2308 or equivalent combo. Hmmmm....or would getting a wood horn (Smith, TAD, Fostex or other) be a better choice?

5. 2231/2235 drivers - have come up with a number to clean up/prep for refoam/recone and possible use or resale. Looks like a lot of time with MEK and good lighting and ventilation.

6. 4312A's - have to get a good replacement 2213H woofer and repair a crack in the front veneer.

7. 4312C (black) - nothing to do except decide whether to keep or move on.

8. L46's - need to refoam and clean up veneer chips/scratches

9. 4425's - probable refoam's on the 2214H's (plus a spare) and figure out how to repair a large chip on the front horn mounting panel (just turn it around, paint black and repalce foilcal? Would make them mirror imaged :) )

10. Sumo Samson sub with 2235H - how do I convince wife this would make a great coffee table in the living room? :blah: :bs:

Whew! That's my top ten, sad to say there are another 10 projects I can't discuss at the moment, they're top secret even to me! And 80% of the above were started after I joined LH. You'all made me do it!

Or should I just sell all the above and get some Project Array's? :applaud:

So, what's on your list that you can share with us?

Seriously list challenged,

Bart

PS: Don't get me started on the Altec 620 and A8's that have been waiting over 2 years!

1 & 2) Finish rewiring and install the other two crossovers that I built into the other L200+075 cabinet and my center channel. (One cabinet is complete), other two still have the N1200, N8000.)

3) Replace my ailing subwoofer amp.

4) Put some chalk between the W15GTI and the cabinet (rattles against the cabinet at a certain frequency).

5) Possibly extend the port on the sub to lower the tuning freq (it's at about 35 Hz now).

6-10) Listen to five disks.:D

1. finishing my 4435

2. hearing music with them long enough to get familiar with them

3. trying to implement a 2435 Beryllium Driver in the 4435 design

4. fixing my second XPL160. First is finished, second need only assembling

5. building CC networks for the XPL160

6. deciding if the 4313B clones with CC networks or the XPL160 with CC networks should stay

7. selling 4313 or XPL

8. starting my MTM project with 2x LE14 or 2214, 2441 with Alu-, Beryllium- or other Diaphragm and Westlake style woodhorn

Somewhere between those steps I need to build CC networks for my second 250ti as the one already have them sounds way smoooother

1] picking up two 4507 cabinets this friday, finally!

2] bring them to my new house because my old one isn't big enough to fit them in

<< move to my new house somewhere in between >>

3] mount the 2235's in them that I had reconed about 4 years ago, but never used since

4] telling Guy to keep harassing JBL about those PT-H1010's he ordered for me over 3 months ago

5] trying out the 2435 / PT-H1010 combi after the waveguides have been delivered

6] trying out the 4507/2235 with 2420/2307/2308, 2420/2344. 2435/PT-H1010, 2440/2382 horns

7] building small cabinets for the perfect 2123H I have lying around

8] trying out a 3 way with all of the above mentioned components

9] deciding what my "definitive system" will be and then still not sell everything I don't need anymore and buy more JBL stuff that I like

10] enjoy the hobby...

Greetings from Switzerland
I am a newbie, and absolutely novice in repair...
One of my L100A tweeters need to be looked after (one of my kids went to close - or was it my wife with the Hoover...)
I just bought in bad state a L212 system (Yesterday...) A lot of refoaming is it (outer edge of the speaker gone - I lack of vocabulary also...) of the ultra bass and both mid-bass.
I suppose the electronics needs a look since the age of the system

All the best
Victor

P.S.
Any advices or tips?

1) Sell my four pairs of 4355's. Don't have the room for them anymore.

2) Replace the L-pads in the 4343's.

3) Load the Metregon in the dog-house with a 3-way 282 system. I'm still short a few components to make it happen.

4) See if I can talk audiobeer into refinishing my 4301BE's. :D

5) I bought four Control 5's (white to match the siding) a few years back with the intention of wiring up an outdoor system for the patio area. I'll see if I can make that happen over the summer.

That should be enough to take me in to the next decade.

Work a 250Ti system into a smaller package respecting the baffle dimensions and offset, and work as a two-enclosure (per side) system to keep some flexibility for future tweeks and mods.

Not so simple as I thought it could be.

In no particular order...

Meet with woodworker friend Wayne, check progress on re-fin of 4333s. He's attempted to restore the worst side of the cabs to OEM oiled walnut ( http://home.earthlink.net/~jdeavs/generalphotoalbum/ ) I'll see the results later this month. If the original finish isn't recoverable, I'll need to pick another direction. Then, I'll need to re-assemble the components (installing the 2405s in mirror-positions) and blissfully sit yoga-style in front of them for extended periods of time.
Re-grille 4333s, either OEM blue or possibly brown to match the L46 grilles.
Clean and oil four L46s, hopefully to be used in the same room as the freshly re-fin'd 4333s mentioned above.
Find appropriate center channel for L46s, resisting any temptation or advice to use 4333s as L&R and L46s as center & rears in surround system.
Find/build cabinet to make my 2135 happy, then re-visit the joys I once knew of playing guitar through a JBL full-range 15".
Reinforce back of old, cruddy Cerwin Vega cabinets that now house E120s, spray cabinets black, mount on studio walls as drum & keyboard foldback monitors. Crank 'em up.
Find a pair of abandoned L100 cabinets for cheap, populate with contents of big box in my basement marked "L100 stuff". Mount them on studio walls as playback monitors. Crank 'em up.
Mount TR225s as foldback monitors in new, smaller main studio, cross fingers that they'll be acceptably usable, leave them there forever. And, uh, crank 'em up, I guess.
Plan & complete cabinet with E140 and two Roland JC50 10"s. Current concept is band-in-a-box, something reasonably portable for rehearsal or party that bass & two guitars can use simultaneously. So far, it's got a 3 rack space top section behind the 10"s with intake & exhaust fans, tuner holder, patch bay, cup holder (!), guitar stand recessed in the face, handles & casters. It may end up with 3 power amp channels, and all players plug in pedalboards or Rockman-style preamps. It's somewhat visible here, under the Gibson banner: http://tinyurl.com/5k78b
Mount L110s above recording desk as playback monitors, test with and without M&K V3B sub. Crank 'em up....and last, but not least...

11. Buy lots of diamonds & shoes for my wife, hopefully distracting her from the ten large speakers in the living room and my complete takeover of the entire bottom floor of our house.

12. Donate to Lansing Heritage site, hoping to not exceed the patience of helpful veterans with bottom-feeder-type questions.

Thanks,

EBay item # 9721236657

Considering that I got my other four L46s free as a tip, this puts me at $32.18 a piece for six L46s including shipping. Should make for a smooth 5.1 or 6.1 setup with high W.A.F, if I can locate the center correctly in relation to the screen (42" LCD rear-pro).

I'll have 10 days very soon (1/18-1/28, I'm moving to our new VA house, my wife's still in NY for a couple more weeks) to give some more attention to this list, so, if anyone still cares, here's a long-winded update with some more useless info:

4333s are playing in my LR, need replacement binding posts at a minimum. They'll ultimately be on their sides next to the TV, so the 2405s also need to be turned on their sides, too. Might fire 'em up with some different amps I have lying around (Adcom 2535/Yamaha P2100/Crown DC300A/Denon PMA-920/Urei 6260/etc.) just out of curiousity.
New grille cloth is in their future, but not on this month's list.
The four filthier L46s are gutted, waiting to go to my woodworker friend for freshening (barter is good). Should happen this month. They'll be the L/C/R & spare for the 5.1 in the LR, with the 4333s dedicated to music. Two more L46s will be rears, they're pretty clean and should just need to be freshened up with the oil/turpentine mix JBL recommends. Twist-lock terminals are solid, but might all swap for binding posts.
Done, with a spare.
I'll at least photograph my 2135, I can't seem to find any pics of one on line other than OEM lit. I know I had it re-coned in the late 80's, I'll be checking to see if it was an OEM re-cone kit as well. I made note a while back of a Cabaret series cabinet that might make a good home for this speaker, might need to follow up on that or plan a DIY.
A little too cold to spray the CV/E120 cabs outside, this might wait for Spring. I'll take a look at the internal construction of the cabs, though, & make a plan for bracing. Take pics while I'm in there. These have tweets & x-overs by the way, they'll be monitors unless I stay with floor wedges, in that case...don't know where the E120s will go.
Got the L100 cabs & tweets from NoRealTalent, slapped 'em together in 2 seconds giving little thought to phasing & such (L100 Century cabs & x-overs with 4312 components installed). I'll re-visit binding posts (I remember a third hole on the plates that need to be plugged), check polarity, clean L-Pads. No grille frames or grilles, but I think these might be flush-mounted into a wall. I'll have to amputate any fingers that even look like they're moving towards pushing in a dust cap, though.
The TR225s will still sit, for now, unless I get ambitious enough to change the carpet in the new studio room- then I'd have to move them. In that case I might fire 'em up just to check them out. Not expecting much more than sounding like big Eons.
I've got some more toys for this 1x15" & 2x10" project, but it's not high on the list. I'll measure up the cabinet for the 15" driver section, and see if it's better suited for the E140 (current) or maybe the 2135.
Got LE10Hs on the way from Giskard (hey, thanks!), they'll replace the current Vifa woofers in the L110 cabs. Of course, now I'm thinking that these might have originally had LE111As in them (haven't seen any definitive reference chart that would tell me for sure), and I'm wondering how the differences in TS parameters between the two models could affect what I'm likely to hear- food for another thread. These boxes were garbage picked wooferless, so they've never been pretty, but I might give Wayne a shot at them since I'll now have 6 pairs of black walnut JBLs, might as well have all the cabs looking decent. Sold the grilles from these to a forum member, though, not that I ever used them.Additions:

Put corners on my Altec 8256 cab, and check where I left the wiring (had tried 2 variants, both 15"s full range or one full range/one with a low pass at ~800Hz). Not sure I had any preference, but I do remember somewhat light gauge internal wiring. This is for bass guitar in a small studio room. If anyone's interested I'll take pics of this beast as well (two 3156 Altec 15" drivers).
Pile all the JBLs (or at least one pair of each model) into the LR, take pics and maybe wire up a speaker selector box for a crude A/B/C/D demo with 4333s/L100s/L110s/L46s. Just 'cause I can, at least before my wife moves down in February.je

Well your not alone. At least I have the MDF ready and the router and Jasper ready to go. The last 2 weekends have not been good at all. I have to cut outside so until I get a rain free weekend that isn't in the 30's I can't do too much. I will finally get the boxes cut for my Le-14H-3. Still trying to figure out how to build the lower box to cover all the bases. Not sure if I can pull this off but it will be fun trying so what the hell. I plan on having 3 HF heads and the driver spacing and layout are all different, Figuring out a base that will work with all 3 isn't as easy as it sounds and still have it look decent. I would love to be doing the TOTL 2 way but I have too much commited with new and freshly reconned drivers to stop now.

Actually, that's almost exactly where I'm moving (just South of 33, but a touch East of 81). I see the West Virginia mountains from my driveway, the Blue Ridge from my front door. Massanutten is over the hilltop from me, can't see it 'til I leave my property but it's right up behind my house.

Wayne, the friend that does the wood work for me, is a Mennonite. He's married to my first girlfriend, actually; that kind of makes things interesting.

Gayle's market over in those parts is the best place for nice crumbly salt-cured Virginia ham. That would be in Penn Laird on east 33 - past Harrisonburg headed towards Massanutten, not quite to Elkton.

We live in Fairfax, but we were down that way around Christmas - beautiful country! I'd like to retire out that way - there or near Staunton ...

I'll have to go to Gayle's, thanks for the info. Hank's BBQ is right along there, too, right?

Did you see the live Nativity on Port Road when you were down for Christmas? I've got camels for neighbors!

We're down for good, we hope. 20+ years of 55-70 hours a week in the NYC ratrace, hoping I can get something fun but 9 to 5ish so I can enjoy the countryside after hours...we'll see. Probably still in the AV industry, but who knows.

My favorite ex-client gave me 4 VIP tickets & backstage passes to the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Charlottesville when he heard I was leaving. Sweet.

Finally finish my listening room. And then re-finish my C-31 corner speaker to match the Blond 1. :D

My list is simple. I will mix myself a sturdy Bombay Gin martini, walk into my listening room, power up my Krell KSA250s amp, KBL preamp, SBP64x D/A converter and MD-1 CD turntable, sit down, relax, turn up the volume and revel in the sound of my fully upgraded (crossovers) L220's, L45's, L55's, L212's or Altec Model Nines. I believe I will start with the L220's. Life is good with JBL....:D

My list - 'got all the parts, just need the time:

Finish grilles to complete "Mini" 4425's
Build a pair of "sub" cabinets with LE14A's to use with PT800's
Build a pair of cabinets for a small PA using either 2226H/2247J/2381 or 2206H/2447J/PT-H95 (or build both pairs...)
Build 2 or 3 stage monitor cabinets using 2206/2426J/little PT horns
Build a pair of custom 4-ways using Sub1500/2012H/2105H/2405H
Build a new cabinet for bass guitar using Sub1500/E110
Build trapezoidal cabinets designed by Zilch
Refoam several 116H-1's for a bunch of 4408's (then sell)
Refoam a pair of 115H-1's to finish off L15's (then sell)
(Maybe) Refoam a pair of LE14A's in S99's (and sell)
Move components from 4612OK's to empty 4612B's (and maybe sell)

SELL a bunch of other speakers, once I decide which I like best for main listening.
Choices so far:
4430's
XPL200A's/DX-1 (maybe with a pair of matching XPL140A's)
Performance PT800's (with LE14A's)

SELL:
A pair of 4315A's
A pair of good L65A's and a pair of L65's for parts
A pair of HLS-820's and a pair of HLS610's
A pair of 4628B's (maybe)
A pair of MR922's
All kinds of other JBL odds n' ends

Keep a bunch of other JBL's for other rooms (L20T's, L60T's, 4408A's, L3's)

That stuff should keep me busy for a few years... :p

Near Harrisonburg, VA. Stunning views of the Blue Ridge right from my front door:

You near DC?No, actually. Just west of Thomas Jefferson's Charlottesville, about ten minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. Welcome to my beautiful adopted (33-years ago) state. 70º today, the dogwoods are getting blossoms and the daffodils are coming up; we'll pay for it later!

Back to the topic: I did get something related done though. I got my PS-400 from Subwoof and got the rack-mount handles painted to match and the amp up and running powering the 4412As. I thought they had a lot of bass before!

Not sure why I thought I remembered you in the DC area, sorry if I startled you! We're practically neighbors, then- thanks for the welcome. I may be taking a job in C'ville, if I think I can stand the commute. We'll see. I'm really enjoying my time down there so far (28 trips since buying the house...I've got a LOT of stuff).

I may be taking a job in C'ville, if I think I can stand the commute. We'll see. That's bound to be an hour commute if you drive fast. It takes me about 45 minutes as I recall and that doesn't count the in-town part. All depends on where you're headed. This area is growing way too fast and, as a Dillon Rule state, there's nothing the municipalities can do to pay for the growth so traffic is becoming the top complaint of Virginia citizens. PM me if I can be of any help.

Sell my Metregon or at least upgrade one of the 2 pair of XO's.
Anyone rebuilding Metregon/Paragon XO's?
