IYO, does it improve on the CD? I'd like to get the DVD-A, but the CD is pretty nice.

In many respects it equals the stereo version and in some respect the DVD-A exceeds it (instruments seem more distinct/discreete/separated in the 5.1 mix).

IMHO, the producer/engineers did not over do the 5.1 like so many other 5.1 recordings do (I guess the novelty is difficult to not play with).

The rear channels are used to enhance the experience with the right ambience and proper delay. The only weakness I note is that some of the vocal harmony is slightly over done in the rear channels shifting the vocal stage a bit too deep into the room; but the overall effect is one of proper spaciousness and instrument/track separation. Interestingly, the center channel seems pretty much avoided except for the occasional properly located sounds.

One caveat is that due to Brian Wilson mixing some of the original solo vocals with other sounds on one track of the master tapes, the 5.1 producer/engineers could not separate the solo vocals out and and state so in the liner notes. This means that there are some minor differences in the mixing/interpretation of the 5.1 versus the stereo version; most won't even notice but a habitual and critical listener may notice ( I didn't)/

A bonus is the 16-bit 48khz PCM mono cut on the DVD-A, it sounds pretty darn good and remains faithful to the original LP recording.

as far as the sacd dvd audio thing goes ive been told that the sacd format is the choice for the audiophile while dvd audio 's are mostly slapped together with instruments coming from areas where they would normally not be found.kind of a cute parlor trick but not the thing for serious listeners.any input?

That was the case when they first came out years ago. I have not listened to any in over 6 or 7 years. Back then they were just remixing them. Maybe now they are recording them correctly.

Donald Fagen - Morph the Cat

I got the cd version of this in a week ago. I was a bit let down by the sq. Compared to most other artists cd's it sounds great, but imo "morph" is not up to Fagen's and Steely Dan's usually ULTRA HI-FI standards. The bass imo is bloated on a lot of the tracks. I've got Fagen's "NIGHTFLY" and to me it has higher quality sound. I've also got SD's "two against nature" and "everything must go" and they to are better sounding than "morph" imo also.

I also got J.J. Cale's two disc set "any way the wind blows" anthology and have really enjoyed it. So many good tunes it's hard to decide what to listen to.:applaud:

Totally agree with you. I've been a Steely Dan fan since the 70's. I own everything they ever did and all of Fagens solo efforts. The latest just isn't up to his normal inspiring music.

Travis, any comments on Fat Possum?

"Not the same old blues crap" is a sampler put out by Fat Possum records- now in its 3rd incarnation.
Fat Possum is a "record company" of sorts based out of Mississippi. They focus on limelighting contemporary Mississippi blues and southern rock artists. The style is RAW, and I mean RAW. The recordings are RAW, too! I got turned on to many great delta artists through Volumes 1 and 2, so I thought 'Why not give volume 3 a shot?'
It's very cool! Low on fidelity- Ultra high on flavor and experience!!!! I love just about every Fat Possum release- just straight up talent with no chaser. I also love how the local artists down there rehash each others' standards. The North Mississippi Allstars (for example) must have done every RL Burnside song to date. Interestingly enough- RL Burnside does a lot of Skip James. It's all connected. If you thought Mississippi music died out with the cotton industry- you definately need to check out the Fat Possum samplers like this!

Had quite a day. Now to figure out how to afford food.:D

Brilliant Corners by Thelonius Monk with Sonny Rollins, Ernie Henry and Clark Terry. This is one of the best jazz albums I have ever heard.

Hot Fives and Sevens, Louis Armstrong. Four CD's.

Time Line, Ralph Towner

Sentimental Journey, Les Brown Orchestra with Doris Day

Jazz In Silhouette and Somewhere Else, Sun Ra and his Arkestra

Ralph Towner's CD is the only new music (2006) in the bunch, not intentional.

Peace, Clark

Music Review, “Café Blue” Patricia Barber.

I asked about this artist a while back because I had read somewhere that this album was superb. I had never heard any of her music and did not know her style.

Many here and elsewhere told me to try it. Many also mentioned she had a sound & style that is an acquired taste.

Then I was faced with the format to purchase because this particular title is available in many forms from basic CD to SA/CD (Super Audio) and OMR (Original Master Recording) as well as standard Vinyl and another super high end Vinyl pressing the name for which eludes me at the moment.
I opted to locate the basic CD to see if I liked her style and music but was unable to find the basic CD. I purchased the SA-CD OMR and had an opportunity to listen last night.

I must preface this by admitting my DVD/CDP is not able to extract the SA/CD as it is a bit older and not quite up to this format. The disc played very well and I am now considering a new upgrade in my system so I can enjoy what I might be missing on this disc.

I planted myself dead center and 15 feet away from my trusty model 19 Altecs. I was fully prepared with a cocktail and the volume control and it was dark and quite comfortable.
Let the tunes begin!

I still can’t say if I really like her style and I now know what was meant by the “Acquired Taste “ comments. I will have to spin this one a few more times to get a better feel in this regard.
As for the recording, all I can say is I was blown away! There is no other way to put this because even though my unit could not play the super audio format on this disc, the recording put speakers in my room and in places where I simply don’t have speakers.
Throughout the entire disc I was amazed at how the play on positions from where sound was coming from could possibly have been done. We are talking plain old stereo here yet at one point she would directly in front and at numerous other points she could be anywhere from left to right to far back or in your face. The musicians are superb with fantastic guitar runs and some very interesting percussion. Her vocals are very smooth and appealing and this recording is faultless in every sense of the term.

I highly recommend this to anyone here who believes his or her system is up to the task to sit and really listen to this music. Even if it is not your preferred style or sound, I doubt you could be disappointed after hearing this selection. Few selections in my vast collection can even come close to the purity of sound contained in these tracks.
I give this all five stars and both thumbs fully up and I have not yet heard the best of this SACD disc. I will most likely make the High End Vinyl pressing of this title my first purchase of this rather expensive format. I can’t wait to hear this music on vinyl and thru the PD 121 with DL 103 MC cartridge. Try it, you just might like it.

Patricia Barber has gotten a lot of mention here. I just got paid so after reading your comments, I ran down to the local Border's to see what I could dig up. None of the SACDs were available, but I grabbed Patricia Barber Live -- A Fortnight in France.

Many also mentioned she had a sound & style that is an acquired taste.
I think Flora Purim sufficiently rearranged my brain in the mid 70s so I got right into in. That warm rich contralto is totally addictive and she can play the shit out of the piano. Great stuff! I ordered the Cafe Blue SACD off Amazon. Thanks for the recommendation.

Nice to see the comments about Patrica Barber's style and recording quality. Doesn't the standup bass sound awesome? Almost any studio could record it like that, and any board could mix it that full range. I wish they would...

Yesterday at Borders, bargain hunting:

The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra (another earlier recording)
Duke Ellington - The Bubber Miley Era: 1924-1929 (No need to ask, it's beyond great if you like this style)
Sonny Stitt - The Last Sessions, Volumes One and Two (Haven't heard it yet)

Last week in Door county, used at a new age shop:
Paul Winter, Canyon. "Grand Canyon Sunrise" sat me down, I couldn't stand. What a magnificient piece of music. This album is not Canyon Lullaby. Warning - the desert drum does have snares and did send me running to the speakers to see what was wrong. Hey, it was dark and I didn't read the liner notes first.:o:

That's funny, I just posted about her in another thread.

I will be investigating other cd's of hers that's for sure. I quite enjoy her style. Talk about unusual arrangements.

Her version's of "Witchcraft" and "Norwegian Wood" are different to say the least. It's not just her but her fellow muscians that are world class. I only have "A Fortnight In France" at this time but have ordered 2 others.

Some may want to try "Marla Glen" as well. I picked up "This is Marla Glen" Vogue 1993. Very good! Great, unique vocal style. Well recorded.

I like this thread, it is a great way to find great music that is also recorded with quailty too. I bought a copy of Sting's " The Soul Cages" (A&M 75021 6405 2 ) and gave it a listen. I found this to be a wonderful mix of songs. Sting is in classic form. It was recorded in 1990 and released in 91'. The quality of the recording is outstanding!. The synth, brass and strings will delight with their airiness and Sting's complex bass work is nothing short of awesome. Try it, you'll like it -S.G.

Yes, it is a wonderful musical experience.

As a side note, I bought the Soul Cages live LaserDisc back in the early '90s, and Sting is in fine form there as well. As the promotional tour for the album, it has lots of Soul Cages music on it, but it also has lots of earlier Sting and Police music, too. Nice if you can find it and have an LD player with digital out and a decent OpAmp to send it through.

I never thought I'd buy a Prince CD (sorry, no offense to all you Prince fans out there!), but you don't have to be a fan to like this one.
16912
It's a 3-cd set titled One Night Alone - Live. A phrase in the included booklet says it all, ' Real music by real musicians'. Believe me, after hearing this one, one cannot help but re-appraise Prince's talents as a musician (guitar, keyboards, vocalist) and entertainer as top-notch. If you love funky, smooth jazz, R&B, and rock & roll, this set may be for you.

Too bad I have this junky dial up! I go over to a buddy's house who has Cable modem and he goes to a site and can play snipps of various artists to get a feel for their style. Might be amazon.
I have to say his PC sound is quite nice with just a simple Altec system but I could spend hours searching out new music.

Keep them comming, I keep a list for when I go visiting.:applaud:

Believe me, after hearing this one, one cannot help but re-appraise Prince's talents as a musician (guitar, keyboards, vocalist) and entertainer as top-notch. If you love funky, smooth jazz, R&B, and rock & roll, this set may be for you.

That's the one with Larry Graham on bass? Awesome stuff, just sit and listen for his playing all the way through the show, it's worth it.

Yeah, right! Just a couple of days before I bought this CD set, I rented Prince's Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas DVD, just for the heck of it actually, like I said before that I wasn't particularly a fan of his. So it was an unexpected and pleasant surprise to see a live performance that was so very good. I heartily recommend the DVD as well! I've yet to find one for myself.

In a discussion on the JBL Studio L Series, I read this post:

Oh while I'm here...Tuesday the main CD I listen to was Dig by Boz Scaggs, great CD and has lots of REAL and DEEP BASS...real musical bass and NOT computer generated movie crap bass
I swear, I hear about the BEST music on this forum! So - on Rick's recommendation, I went to Amazon and found a used copy of the CD and ... he's right - absolutely GREAT stuff!
Very close and intimate vocals ... nice full bass and great horns, smooth songs. Its my current must-play CD to show off the speakers or just chill ...

Thanks to JBLnsince1959 for the tip!

Heather:

You're welcome.... I first heard it in a high end speaker place here in KC...Great stuff..while I was talking to the owner my attention kept going to the music that was playing so Isaid who's that?... and he said Boz Scaggs..I say WHAT!!?!

anyway, it's become one of my favorites and when people come over to my house to listen and said WHERE"S THE BASS ( most people are use to hearing their boxes or over powered bass and I set my stuff flat) so I put in that CD, play a few tunes....then I say "there's the bass, it's in music"...:D

anyway, glad you like the Boz CD.

Right now I'm listening to Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble - music for The Native Americans....cool, way cool...Really great music when you're traveling off road.....top down..... at night..... in the deep desert........no one but you, GOD and the surrounding spirits:)

Boston's debut and the follow-up Don't Look Back...Just released re-
masters. Much better bottom end, but kind of hard to improve a
pretty good recording from the start. Guitars were also brought
"forward". Well worth the $.

Hey turnitup,
That sounds like a winner ! I became a fan after working on Tom Scholz private airplane. Also gave him 20 min. car ride from the intl airport to the muni airport where I worked on his plane. My brush with fame. 3rd stage is also good. Found RUSH moving pictures in a master. Rock on...

I recently bought "Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Perform Music of the Beatles"; see this page for the details of the recording:
http://www.telarc.com/gscripts/title.asp?gsku=0540&mscssid=W09GKAHF574B9NEEDJ9TW92U1A0RASX4

The songs with less interesting lyrics -- and let's face it: there are many such songs by the Beatles -- are performed in purely intrumental versions. Other songs are performed a capella by 4 classically trained male singers. Yet other songs are performed by the 4 singers accompanied by the Cincinnati Pops.

There are a few problems with the microphones -- faulty connections --, but it is otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable SACD.
