New "How The West was Won"

The new DVD version of HTWWW came out today and I was at Best Buy at 9:30 this morning to get it.

The video was supposedly made from an original 3 panel source and looks very good. Evidently the lines at the panel joints were removed digitally, I haven't listened to the comment track yet but it seems obvious as the screen shots I took show.

I saw this picture down in the Loop (at the Cinestage theater as I recall)when it came out in roadshow, this new DVD version gets the awesome presence of 3 panel Cinerama across much better than the old one did.

The sound is now DD and sounds cleaner and brighter than the old DVD.

This came out on Blu-Ray too but I don't have a BR machine, once Ben Hur comes out on BR I'll take the plunge. With this is out on BR I'm hoping Ben Hur isn't far behind.

The box says the aspect ratio is 2.89:1 and it looks it.

Still uses a bit of pan and scan, but they managed to remove a lot of the frame seams that were so prevalent in earlier transfers.

this is one flick that's always guaranteed to put me right to sleep, even though I do enjoy most of it.

There's no panning and scanning RD, the image is firmly anchored center screen. Given that I've read articles claiming an aspect ratio of 2.72:1 to 3:1 for the three strip process it seems probable the entire filmed image is on the screen save for whatever overscan the TV has. On my TV the image comes out at 2.75:1

You could be right, I keep wanting to refer to a normal 35mm frame aspect, whereas this was a 35 cropped to nearly square. On the river shot, I thought it looked like a pan to the left, but it's hard to find the seams in that one.
