    JBL Model L36/Decade 36 questions

    $100
    1 Decade L36
    1 L36

    Decade 36
    W 125A
    M LE5-6
    T LE25-2

    L36 has a LE5-10 MID ?

Both woofers had been very nicely redone.
    D36 push button conn
    L36 twist type

    D36 8/10 L36 6.5/10
    Original covers and badges.

Opened both up. D36 xover screwed right out. L36 unscrewed but won't budge,
so can't tell if identical.Def original on D36
    So
Looking for ideas on refurbish/mods If cabinets were better would stay original, but
want to have fun with these. Mid situation ? Dampening, leave or replace, add
more ?? I have a set of 035Ti's, swap ? Crazy angled port, anybody mess with that ?
Any Xover nuts out there? I'm open.
    All appreciated.

    Herd is now L-15, 4406 X2, L-36, N38
Eye on set of L-166's in painted over cab's $300 (had a set 9.9/10 $550
    Lost to Greed $1250)

Many of the even-numbered LE5 models are basically identical. LE5-6, LE5-8, LE5-10, and LE5-12 are all totally compatible and interchangeable. Between those 4 the only differences are that LE5-8 and LE5-12 have a silver faceplate, while LE5-6 and LE5-10 have a black faceplate. So you are good to go with the LE5-6 and LE5-10 as they are not only acoustically equivalent, but even have the same color faceplate as well. If you had a mix of something like a LE5-10 and LE5-9, then that would be problem.

I have JBL L150 speakers that use the LE5-10 and for a short while also had a pair of L36 speakers with LE5-6 mids. During that time I swapped the mids just for fun and I can confirm that they do indeed sound the same. I did notice in my case that the LE5-6 mids seemed to have a slightly lighter-colored cone compared to the LE5-10 mids. I just assumed that it was because they were older and/or had more sun or other environmental exposure but yours seem to have that same slight color difference also. So it might be that it's normal for all LE5-6 mids to have a slightly lighter-colored cone compared to LE5-10 but unless that bugs you it should not matter.

    Thoughts on other issues

1 Notice glue was around pots only on xovers just, pry around that area to release?
    2 changing out with 035ti's?
    3 changes to damping?
    4 F ing with port?
5 xover? Rebuilding? Removing pots from system? Active?
    6 connectors?

    Buy, Refurbish, Sell Vintage Audio
Found it hard to keep good stuff because of the "margin" $$$
I love making a "Poke out of a Pig's ear", takes HOURS !!!!
I'm trying to set up a near field H/T . I need to keep
SPL's down to please wife in other room, plus I'm an O/F and
anything above 12K is a problem. I have a killer sub, so with the
    other Bookies, we'll see.
Any derogatory reason for getting rid of them? Other than JBL L150's
With my limited audio budget mind you(6 Daughters !!!) the Pristine L166's
thru A McIntosh MC2100/C-24/MR74/Thorens TD160-V15III set up was
THE finest listening experience for my Old ears. But after 100+ hours detailing etc.
a month of enjoying, McIntosh was off to local Dr. who's still high on the rig.
Greed sent the L166's with them.

TRYING to work a trade deal for my HiFi listening.
"pair of JBL CENTURY L100 HIFI AUDIOPHILE VINTAGE SPEAKERS for sale asking $800 , 23.5"x12.5"
extreamly heavy floor speakers, they are in excellent working condition" I can smell them 10 miles away.
(did I say 6 Girls+ 15 .3 grand kids, all within 6 miles !!!!) Tried Trading Oldest+1 but wants Cash
Trade yes, but Selling would just be wrong.

    My working rid is
Adcom GFP565, just for the Thorens which I kept
Twin Adcom GFA545II's and TwinTube DAC's
Onkyo X5000, harman/kardon 630, and Sansui 2000X receivers are smoke testing
on the shelf getting ready to off to snow birds coming to Florida
Nasty, pristine units I love to detail. Look and work like new. From Goodwill.

    Again Thanks
Any other comments very appreciated, especially on xovers.

You might try some heat to weaken the glue a bit before you pry the stuck crossover from the inside of the cabinet.

There were a couple reasons that I got rid of my L36 speakers. The main reason is because I really don't care much for paper-cone tweeters. They aren't bad, and plenty of people do like them, I just prefer dome tweeters myself. The 125A woofer was also somewhat underwhelming after having become accustomed to the 12" woofer output from the L150s and L100Ts that I already had at the time. I think it's a well balanced system overall, and not bad for someone just getting their feet wet with vintage JBL, but in my case I didn't find myself using them very much, and someone made me a nice offer.

Changing the tweeters out for 035Ti tweeters should work. JBL themselves mentions the 035TiA (basically equivalent to the 035Ti) as a "last resort" replacement:
    https://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/T...ecade%20ts.pdf

I'm not personally a fan of replacing stock drivers, but the fact that JBL at least mentions it in their own documentation would ease my apprehension a little bit. If you can get away with not modifying the crossovers and you keep the stock tweeters safe somewhere, it shouldn't hurt resale value either (can always put the stock tweeters back). I've not yet run into a problem with any pots that a bit of deoxit and working it back and forth a few times couldn't fix, so I would not jump at the chance to remove them unless you really feel that they are causing a problem.

I also ran thru my L-36's rather quickly. highs were OK. but I heard a rough xover to mid transition from both HF & LF .... kinda felt like a hole somewhere, but .... I did enjoy the 2 way L-26 which had virtually the same components and box size. Felt the simpler xover did the job better.

The L-36's had more value in resale than they did to me.

$800 for L-100's ??? I can think of many better for less . Still inferior to your departed L-166's. If you can get a painted pair for $300 , I'd go that route. IMHO.

PS: I did answer you in the parallel thread.

    L36

    Thanks CB/Wolf

    Looks like dilemma,
Part out, or try to made a "silk purse", and pass on.
    Refoams are very nice.
M/T cones look almost like melted. Cranking heat disease? Detrimental?
Not bad for a C note.

L166's had a stroke, so on hold.
Knew mine were something special, but better than L100's?
    Respect your advice.

I've had both , yes, L-166 was superior , in more ways than just the xover (the L-100's simple one allowed the bass to run "full range" and overlapped with the mid)

The forum has adopted a saying from a departed, well respected member (Zilch)
    "L100's ; fake but fun"

The Delta wasn't bad, but my first tour was near the DMZ. I know of one day when we set a record .... 22 inches rain in 24 hours.

The schoolgirls wear a very pretty dress/pants combo (called an "ao dai" ,meaning long clothes) ... there were streets that my jeep could barely make it through all the mud, but those girls in flowing garb could navigate down those streets on foot and get ZERO mud on their white "school uniforms"

    Khe Sanh ?

pretty close. Phu Bai (near Hue) ..was up there photoging for Stars & Stripes. Did get to Camp Carroll (near KS) for a phu-gas demo. https://books.google.com/books?id=p5...hu-gas&f=false
The big rain day (mentioned above) flooded out the local PX which had just received a huge shipment of stereo gear.
