    Marantz HD speakers

I have heard that the Marantz HD speaker series were designed by some engineers of JBL in the late 70's, it is true ?

I have a pair of HD-660 and they sound very good, good bass, better midrange and good treble too. The box is also very well built.

I believe that they are an Ed May design...I have Hd770's & HD77's and they are very similar sounding to L1's.

read abt Ed & Marantz in the Lansing history section

I too, have read that the Marantz HD series were Ed May designs. I have HD-88s and 77s, but I have to say that I like L-150s just a little better.

Stunning pair of Design Series 920 speakers....these are a 3 way with built in stands, making a tower config...designed by JBL chief designer Ed May to compete with JBL L-100's (after he left JBL and went to Marantz)
    they are
    Width 15
    Height 38 1/4
    Depth 12
    Weight 45
Power Handling Capacity 200 watts integrated program material
Frequency Response 33 Hz to 20 KHz +/- 3 dB

These have the nicest veneer that I've seen in a long time and solid quarter round solid walnut on the corners, the 3D grills are dead on perfect ...I just finished the re foam on the 12 inch woofers today...the wire connects from the underside, making a neat look...no stands needed, already at the right height...these would be a nice showpeice for a nice home, and sound great at the same time....take a look , guarantee that you wont be disappointed...can demo.

If these were in a new retail store you would not know they were used.

Unfortunately, Ed would not have the opportunity to develop his concept into a production system. He left JBL in 1976, just as detailed design was just beginning. He joined Marantz Superscope to become their head of loudspeaker design. A custom design facility was built specifically for him. He used it to turn out three complete lines of loudspeakers in very short order. However, this was the last loudspeaker work he would perform. Edmond May passed away suddenly in 1980 while still employed at Marantz.

In 1976, Edmund (Ed) May, one of the
    most respected speaker designers at
JBL, joined Marantz and was given the
charge of developing a speaker line to
    complement the company’s other high
end offerings. Superscope built a new
R&D facility for May to work in. The
    resulting “HD” speakers were highly
praised and enhanced the brand’s reputation
    substantially. Unfortunately, May
died in 1980 and later design efforts
met with considerably less success and
all efforts to design and market loudspeakers
    ceased.
