Other than compression driver 288 for altec horns 1003B ?

    Hello,

    could somebody help me.

I have a pair of Altec 1003B and I would like to know if I can mount other compression driver than 288. I have a proposal for a pair of TAD TD-4001 2". As the Altec is 1.4" can I mount an adaptor from 2" to 1.4" ?

    Other suggestions ?

I have found a pair of Altec 288-16G (1600$) but the price is near a paire of new TD-2002. I think that the compression are over priced. What do you think ?

Does have somebody a price estimation for Altec Vintage ?

    Thank you
    Carlo

    Altec 288

These seem to be going for $300-600 a pair on EPAY, the 299 would be a good choice as well, a bit newer, higher power handling very nice and seems to be going for less due to the lack of Alnico. There are adapters for 1.4 to 2" available, but I have heard mixed reviews on whether that is a good idea or not.
Here is a pair of 288-8k, with horns, you could compare.

    Hi audiovalvola

According to Altec Lansing Multicellular performance chart.

The 1003b requires 2 drivers with a XO at 300HZ.

You have a choice between 288C,290D,and730B. The 290D has a slighly higher sensitivity rating than the 288c.

    Hi,

The 299 would be a good replacement. As of today's specs.
You will need 2 drivers still. This is quite a big horn.

Xo at 500 hz 12db slope.

Where in Sweden do you live?

Sorry... I am making fun of my fellow Americans who also confuse Australia and Austria...

Can't help with specific prices, but vintage Altecs are really inexpensive here compared to TADs. You may want to see if Great Plains Audio will ship overseas. They produce a new version of the Altec 288. They call it the 399. Several forum members have used them and seem happy with them. The prices for these brand new drivers are very reasonable. You should also try using the search function here on this board to read about them.

In any case do not use an adapter to reduce a 2" driver down to a 1.4/1.5" throat.

    Hello,

thank you all for your comments and help. I will see what I found. Maybe some Theater will have a pair here in the region.

I have see in a german review that one is using the Philips 5202 compression driver. But never founded any information about it.

    1.5" 1.4" driver for 1003B

You can used the following new driver from JBL TAD beyma Paudio with an 1.5"etc...
Or the old vintage like Vitavox S2, S3, S5 and S6.
    JBL 2451, 2447, 2435, 2431 etc...
    TAD 4003
    etc....

Altec should be a lot cheaper in switzerland/germany and france. Thei are quiet close to you.

$1600 for a clean pair of 288-16G's probably is not bad for those drivers in Europe. They are going for around $1200 on ebay here in the US. You probably know this, but the 288-G is quite different from the earlier 288's (and much better). The earlier 288's have about half the amount of alnico and sell for much less. The TAD's are nice, but in my experience they are best on TAD's own wooden horns (practically unobtainable).

If you decide on the Altec 288, send my a pm. I have some 511E's for sale.

    Dear all,

finally I'm very lucky as I hav found a pair of 288-16G plus a pair of reserve OEM new in box diaphragms voice coil and that for at market price in USA. The compressions was used in a TV Studio of the RTBF. (Belgian National TV). Apparently they used Altec for the audio studio, but have now switched to a full digital system (Tannoy Elips iDP). I know about the same story with our National Swiss Radio (RSR SSR idée Suisse) who has in stock a lot of EMT 930. When all was transfered 1st to CD Suder A730 (and now to servers Cubase) the EMT were as new (some were new after 20 years and in original boxes with the original celophane never opened ! plus a lot of EMT 15)

    288-16G

    Hi Carlo,

Yes you are lucky to have come into getting these great Altec components at a reasonable cost. I think the best part is that you have access to new , old stock diaphragms .

I have 288-8K drivers that I like very much. I'm sure you'll enjoy your 288-16Gs.

    - Are you going to use a tweeter above these ?
    - Or are you going to build an inline RC circuit to depress the midrange and bump up the high frequencies so that you can run them out to 15K ?

    Great Plains 399 1.4" driver

I use these from Bill Hanashuck(Great Plains) and they sound great on my 500hz round Tractix Edgar midrange horns!

These come new and are similiar to 288-8K Altecs.
