Removing L-20 Tweeter from Lancer 99

I got a new set of Lancer 99 cabinets (used but mint ) and I'm moving my speakers into these new cabinets. I"m looking at that L-20 tweeter with that black ring around it and I'd like to know how one goes about removing it???? With no damage to any of it. I guess you have to take that ring off to get to the screws, but how to go about it????? Thanks, Frank

That black metal ring around the tweeter cone is glued on; you need to carefully use a heat gun (being careful to NOT burn the cone or anything, be sure to not concentrate too much heat!) to loosen the glue, then it will peel off much easier. Same procedure people use to remove the foilcal labels from the front of JBL cabinets... same glue, same aluminum sheeting.

    Regards,
    Gordon.

    Be Careful!!

You have to be EXTREMELY careful, even if you manage to soften the glue enough with the heat.

The foilcals distort very easily, and once they do, it's almost impossible to straighten them again.

There are three phillips-head screws underneath the foilcal that hold the LE-20 in place.

    Crossover in the 99

The pair of empty 99's I have don't seem to use the small square crossover based on the cutout for the crossover which looks factory on the back of the enclosure. What else was used as a crossover from the factory on these? I know the LX8 will work, but that is also too small from this crossover cutout. It's about 6" long which is more than the LX8 needs. Thanks Frank

    Factory X-over is the LX-4.

    LX4

Yes, LX4 is the one that was in the system when I took it apart, but the hole in the back of the new cabinet I'm using now has a much larger opening. So what would have been in there. As I said I know an LX 8 will work but it is also smaller than the opening in the back. Cheers, Frank

A different version of LX4, I think. Hang on. I've got a pair here somewhere....

    Yours in metal cans? LX4-1?

I'll check the circuit, but I think this form was used also:

3" x 5" rectangular cutout, 6 mounting screws? This one has "S99 LX4-1" stamped on the back. Only have the one, alas....

Yes, that looks like it would cover the opening! I guess I'm going to go with the LX8 I got on ebay and make a filler to cover remaining opening. The small LX4 doesn't do it for me at all. Cheers, Frank
