Nice! I love seeing stuff in it's tomb- dust and all. Look at those horns! (Altec compression drivers?) I have no clue as to what the cabinet model is- but they look very cool. Acquisitions of yours?
from http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=59069Original beauties for sure. The LF cabinets sure look like those 817 dwgs.
Not too far from me, maybe 4 hrs.
Hi,
The big one with 2 woofers is model 211-A it is mounted on a pedestal, for screen alignment. THe others are A-5 according to the size of the HORNS on the ground beside them.
Here is a picture of a 211-A with out it's pedestal.

These are NOT 211-A. If you look closely, you will notice the enclosures are wedge shaped, about the size of 817's. They were made by Altec for Simplex, look closely at the crossover box. These Simplex systems were used in quite a few of the theaters in the 50's. The HF horns are the good old tar filled multicells.

I've purchased these Simplex LF horns, along with the 1005/288 tarfilleds. There are three of each coming, and I'm trying to guess at the total weight, plus perhaps 50-100lbs of packing material. Any thoughts? Packing is ongoing, last night and hopefully tonight.
I've also put together an instruction sheet on how to pack these. I'd appreciate any comments if I've done something wrong or ill advisable. Sooner is better obviously....

The top two cabinets do look very simialr to Altec 211,s.
The second set, with the angled outer cabinet construction is definitely more like Altec built for Simplex cabinets. On second look, the large metal boxes on the side of the cabinets appears to be the crossovers, what big boxes they are in!
Are the drivers in operating condition? If so, have you listened to any of them? And again, if so, what are your impressions?
If you have a large enough room, and like the sound of those old basshorns, and HF horns, have a blast and enjoy!

Scott,
I'm hoping the entire kit and kaboodle will be loaded onto the shipping truck by this weekend. I have not heard the system, but it was the speaker system for the Midwest theater in Scottsbluff NE until 2005. I'm hoping that since the drivers have only been sitting for a couple of years, there won't be much needed to be done. However, GPA should be able to take care of any issues if necessary.
Unfortunately, I don't have a large enough room in my house to let these old monsters sing, so for the meantime they will go in my garage. We've been shopping for a new house with the prerequisite basement/mancave, but so far, no luck....After all is said and done, shipping weight is expected to come close to a ton, so as soon as I take possession, I have some HEAVY duty casters that will go on the bass bins to make moving them around a little easier....Me and my audio buddies will make sure they work before packing them away in the garage...Wish me luck!...
Cheers!

Absolutely, the BEST of luck to you.
I hope you find a house with a big enough basement for the system.

After more hitches and speedbumps than you can imagine, delivery is scheduled for Monday 12-3PM. I will post pix if anyone is interested...
BTW, does anyone have a reference for the cabinet dimensions? I'm wondering what the depth from front to back might be as I scramble to find space for these in my garage....
Cheers!
