If you could steal some L7s or L-150s for that price....that would be a nice bang for the buck
Yup, and don't forget L100T's. Pay no attention to a few of the current Ebay listings (we all have fantasies, now don't we!). L100T's will range in price from $200 - $500 depending on condition. The ONLY problem I have with that speaker is JBL used a very low grade of veneer which tends to bubble and/or peel. Other than that, they rock. Or three L55's across the front, I've got that in my second HT setup.
The L5 is also an excellent speaker in that price range...

It also has a relatively small footprint for a speaker of that caliber and is much easier to set up than an L7. Its four drivers blend together quite seamlessly, and it's capable of amazing sound.
