I'll bet someone at Miller Dial and Nameplate would know; they made all of the foilcals. They were right next door to us on Casitas.

Hi Glen and Harvey,

Miller moved from Casitas to some 10mls east,....El Monte , Temple City Blvd.
Maybe that they have also a "Harvey Gerst" who can remember the old times.

The 150-4 (#711) marked as a 16 ohm device.
It should be 32 ohms.Very unusual.

I found the 175-34 shown in only one place, the January 1954 Theatre Sound Systems price list (a 275-34 was also listed)Originally Posted by glen
This would seem to agree with the interpretation of the "date-code" serial number of the 175-34 giving a March, 1954 build date.
Does anyone know what the difference was between the regular 175 & 275 and these "-34" versions? Were these early designations of the later "HP" versions with the more rugged phenolic diaphrams?

Hi Glen,
my list shows also what you wrote....
I have now:
175's with the numbers:
30474
40274
40374
40474
you seem to be absolutely right with the date code.
Oldmics assumes that they changed the system in 1955/56 for 5 digit or 4 digits without any systematic.....maybe they only count up from this date.

The types with the -34 , as one example confirms were built in the C34

Talked briefly to a couple of people at Miller Dial and they said that any old records would have been purged long ago. And one person who had been there for 30 years knew they had done work for JBL but said that anyone with a recollection of that would have been retired from the company long ago.Originally Posted by Harvey Gerst

The pair of badges could indicate that these components came from two different 001 systems, but But the seller only mentions one "N1200" speaker in the auction for the components, so one of the pair may have come with the D130 that the seller is also auctioning at this time.

Hi Harvey,Originally Posted by Harvey Gerst
Since you weren't 100% sure, and I was striking out at Miller Dial, I did a little investigation and found that a company named Nelson Nameplate was located at 3191 Casitas Ave, just down the block from JBL and thought they might've done some of the nameplate work too, possibly including the engraved plastic versions that came and went.
Here's their webpage with a brief history of the company:
http://www.nelsonusa.com/about/
With the kind help of John Beilfuss I received this forwarded email from Ed Simpson who worked at Nelson Nameplate as a salesman in the 50s and worked his way up to become president of the company by the time he retired:
JB,
We moved into 3191 after the fire in 1955. JBL was already there as I recall.
It was a couple of years later that an engineer from JBL came down to visit us. I took him through the plant and looked at some of the work he wanted done. I believe, in those days it was etch work and he also had some small screened or lithographed panels.
We did a quotation for him and a copy to purchasing which was a lady but her name escapes me. They were a big Miller Dial account at that time.
We did get some business and things were going well, they could come down and design parts and we made them quickly.
This all came unglued when the Purchasing Manager whose first name was Red and again the last name escapes me took the business away from us and retooled Miller.
The whole thing only lasted about a year. It is interesting to know that the Purchasing Manager later was let go and went to work for Miller Dial in the same capacity.
There would be no records from any early dealings with JBL that I know of.
Ed

Thanks Glen for your work to find out more about the serial numbering system, but I cannot imagine that the foilcal company does the punched or printed numbers. i guess they made the naked decals and the Northridge guys made the number.
Anyway....the Registartion counter is now on 1068
best regards
