    Equipment Offered To Me

    Howdy Folks

Happy upcoming New Year to All

A customer came into the shop today and during the course of conversation offered me some gear that I am unfamiliar with.

For a small cost he is offering to me a G.A.S. (Great American Sound) Son of Ampzilla amplifier. Its a black faced 80 watt class "A" design.

    Also a "Thalia" preamp.

Any opinions to the quality and value of these items?I have heard of Ampzilla but know nothing of its quality.

Should I grab em for eBay or are they worth listening to?

I"m a tube guy and this stuff is way too new for me.If it dosent glow it aint fun.

Tell me please "O" wise ones.

I have been told some of the GAS stuff is still revered and holds a decent ebay value but you're right, if it don't glow, it's gotta go...

    Tube sub amp?

    Hey Thumper,

I currently run tubes up top, but not for the sub1500's...
2 pair of 6550's per channel provide enough maintenance cost/fuss.

I like the idea of a little more motor control than most tube amps offer for
    driving subs...but that's a bit of smoke blowing... I haven't actually
-heard- sub1500's being driven by massive tube power, I imagine it could
be quite pleasant. 300W Sunn amp + a pair of 15 inchers will flap your
pant legs in a nice way if that's a sound you're looking for.

If you're not to be persuaded otherwise, Audio Research made
a nice set of 300W mono amps that pop up in the sub-$7000
(pun intended) range per pair on the used market now and then.
Think there's an ebay'er pushing a pair for $6500/pair now (or was).

Make for nice space heaters too.

    -grumpy
