To tweet or not to tweet

Greetings all, newbie poster here. I was directed to this fine site by Robert Hamel.... thanks!

I have a new pair of JBL L96s and one tweeter is blown, measuring "open" resistance. I'm trying to find a replacement tweeter. But first, I am not sure the one good tweeter is really all THAT good?

Comparing these to my AR90s they seem to have no sparkle or zing... but if I put my ear right up there, they're just sizzling away (at least on the one side) but I want more projection and fire from the tweeters. The bass and mids are powerfully strong on these, is it possible my remaining good tweeter is ill? Should I hear high end as strong as everything else? Even with the pot all the way up and the treble boosted on my amp they're nowhere near as sparkly as my big ARs set flat. But the one tweeter *is* working. Just maybe not as much as I think it should??

Like I said this is my first pair of JBLs. I hope this isn't too Noobie of a question? I just can't imagine adding a good tweeter with this low level of output to the other box would make that big of an auditory difference.

The repair diaphragm for the 044 (L96, L112, L150A, 4411) is currently on backorder.

OCS might have some in stock.

I have recently removed four 044's out of L96's and 4411's and all four are in various stages of decay. They do simply wear out.

Before putting fresh 044's into your L96's you will probably want to run a voltage drive on your networks to ensure they are working properly.

Giskard, you tried an 035Ti or 035TiA in one of these? I always thought that 044 tweeter seemed like the weak link in the L96 and L150, IMHO. Might also be easier to get a pair of those 035's?

The 035Ti might work in the L96/L112/L150A/4411. I think you would need to rig some sort of mounting flange because the 035Ti has that flimsy mounting flange that will cause it to move in sympathy with the LF transducer if the mounting hole is too big.

An 044Ti is a bolt-in but they are two and a half times the cost of a new 035Ti. The whole 035Ti runs roughly the same cost as just the 044 diaphragm. I'm actually thinking on repairing these 044's I have with the 044-1 diaphragms (L250) since they are cheaper

It appears we are starting to enter the age where many of these systems will no longer be serviceable as designed so I suppose the choice will either be to patchwork them together or simply punt and buy a pair of LSR32's

This is exactly what I was looking for... a potential replacement tweeter. I'd love to keep these 96s "stock" but.....................

I've seen 035s here and there but don't know if they'll fit. The openings for the 044s seem to be about 5" across, what is the bolt circle diameter for the 035s?

What I'd really like to do is slip some 077s or 2405s in there and stand back and go oooooh ahhhhhhhh.

Probably the 044s work just fine, it's just that my hearing has been, shall we say, "impaired" over the years?

You will need to redo the high pass filter to run an 077/2405 but it could be made to work. Use an L65 or 4315 high pass between the LE5 and 077/2405. Add a 3 dB resistor pad to keep the L-Pad up in a linear range. You might even think about using the entire 4315 filter between the LE10, LE5, and 077/2405. That could be cool although I would have to look at the 4315 schematic again to see what would need to be changed to work with the LE10.

I believe it's a 4-11/16" bolt circle diameter.

Thanks.... I'll measure up the L96s and see if maybe the 035s will fit without fabricating a plate to cover the hole.

Unless you want to sell me one of your many surplus 044s?
