I had been using LE85s for years... when I got my hands on my first 2441s... it was quite a shock! Love them big bad boat anchors!

The 902 is a dinky sized driver compared to the 399(288-8K clone).

Big difference is the weight.

I wish the older(or some newer ones) 4" JBL drivers were not so expensive and hard to find, I feel if I were to buy some larger format drivers of the JBL types, I would have to buy them from some trusted members of this forum in order to be sure I have what I am supposed to have!

Have anybody tryed to change from the 2420 to 2440 in a 4343 system? And does it sound better?

I have assumed it would be an improvement. (you may have to try it and let us know) I think a 2441 and a better horn would be an even bigger improvement than the obvious drop in with the HL93, but it isn't really possible unless you are willing to mount the horn outside of the cabinet. One thing for sure, those exponential horns with the slant plate lenses are certainly space efficient.

Hi Widget. What about the horn used in 4350? I think I remember it is short enough to fit inside the 4343?
Or what horn did you have in mind?

That would be 2311 = HL93.

As Johnny pointed out... they are one and the same. I do not like it myself. That driver sounds much better on a 2397, a tractrix, or even a standard radial horn.

The 2311/HL93 is the easy obvious solution as it will bolt right into the existing cut out. I am not sure if there is enough room for the driver though. Depth won't be an issue, but the large diameter may hit the dog house.

10 years ago a friend of mine upgraded his amps. He originally had NAD a amp driving ESS speakers with the Heil Air motion HF driver and changed to Doxa (Norwegian brand).


He was so satisfied with the upgrade, and shocked with how the NAD's really played that he threw the NAD instead of selling them.

He kept repeating: "Now there is no one welding in my ears".

I would describe the difference between my LE85/HL91 and 375/HL93 vs the new LE85/Smith horns in almost the same way. This problem will grow with increasing sound pressure, and I like it LOUD.

That being said: I feel the 375/HL93 is more dynamic than the LE85/HL91.

As for welding ages ago I did a 2307/2308 comparison with a 2397. The 2397 has a lot of appeal but that appeal was plastered over everything I played. I also found the 2307/08 has more front to rear depth and imaged better in my room in the 4345 system. Mediocre caps and amps were the cuplrits for that splashy sea shell sound of the 2307/08 but that is expense like about $500 for capacitors and a lot more for diy Alephs. I also think the 2308 lense makes the 2307 sound considerably better . I am sure this will turn a few heads.....Muhhahah

When is build my next horn based system I will quad amp and will use nothing less than an Aleph 3 for mids and a power J fet (Aleph J ) for the Uhf with Hovlands as protection capacitors.

I would like to try a dual 2123 J 300 - 1000 hertz (like the Klipsch mod) and large 2397 from 1- 4 Khertz, a small 2397 from 4 - 10K herts with dusted diapgrams on a 2441 and 2420 and maybe a fostex Uhf horn above that (see Blue Moon diy reviews)

I run 2435's on 2397's with my 4343's. Smith horns are amazing! 2435's are sweet too. Haven't had time to try the 2441's on them yet.

Keep us posted when you do try. Have you placed the driver/horn on top of your speakers?
