- It holds in place, the "bullet shaped" displacement/phase plug .
( Don't turn it / without securely holding the "bullet" / or else you'll crinkle the diaphragm under it / resulting in tears all-round due to "crinkling"/ scoring of the diaphragm ).

Just a minor correction.

The 2405/077, 2403/076, and 2404 all have it too. The 2405/077 have the wedge and the cat eyes and baby butt have a cone that are all held in by a screw and it is always covered by a foilcal when leaving the factory the first time.

Interesting;

On my 2402s, I was able to twist the nose cones without holding the screws or degrading the sound. In fact, turning (loosening/tightening) the cone actually changed the high frequency response slightly and I was better able to match the two radiators.

It is not meant to be an adjustment. I hope you lucked out and didn't damage your diaphragms.

The bullet, wedge, or cone must be tight against the center ring of the diaphragm, this is what holds it in place. If the bullet etc. isn't tight against the center ring of the diaphragm, the voicecoil is likely not properly in the gap and this is the "adjustment" you heard. Allowing it to twist will frequently damage the very thin aluminum diaphragm.
