Question LE 25 foam ring replacement

Greetings- I'm finally getting around to install the foam rings on my LE25 tweeters but I need to be sure of something first. The clear adhesive ring from the old foam ring is stlll in place. Is there a safe procedure to remove it without damaging the voice coil leads? I assume that there may be a fair amount of residue from the old adhesive left behind as well. What is a safe solvent to use to remove this? I'm guessing that the new foam ring will adhere much better to a clean surface , or should I just stick it over the existing clear ring to avoid the risk of damage? Any ideas? Thanks very much, Paul

The leads can be damaged trying to remove that, which has been reported here.

I'd just stick on top of it....
