jbl sub woofer drivers
a quick question to all you fellas with more knowledge than mei am thinking about building a sub woofer and am considering several drivers jbl 2241 jbl 2235 jbl 2203 they all have varying sesitivity,power,and other levels which one would be better for a sub or is there other models that are even better that i should consider possibly one or two drivers per box THANKS from alaska
The 12" 121/124/2203 and 15" 136/2231/2235 are pretty fun.
You need to provide more information though before anyone can offer any real advice. What are your mains, what is your environment, what is your goal, etc., etc.
The 14" LE14H-3 beats either of the series above, as does the 15" W1500H or the 18" 2242H. But then they'd better, they've had over two decades of evolutionary development from then 'till now.

thanks all for the quick responses so far in regards to lancers questions the goal currently is to fill the room 20x16 with decent home theater sub woofer levels i dont need to to shake the foundation loose comepletely lol i am currently using a pr of L100Ts as mains L80t3s as side surrounds and a pr of L112s as a center and rear surround just now getting into home theater and trying to make a nice sound system on a budget total cost so far is around $1100.00 for speakers so far am using a i know not so good lol sony da5es receiver for amplification of course at some point up grade to quality seperate components $800.00 for sony new in box, any ideas or thoughts greatly appreciated
Well, If you want the most "bang for the buck", IMHO, a 2245 18" in a 2 foot cube (about 7 cubic feet), tuned to about 23-24 Hz vent tuning is ridiculously effective. I've helped build such a subwoofer, for a client using L100T front mains, in fact... worked great!
In fact, if you wanted to really get bang for the buck, you could use the 2245 with one of the Parts Express BASH sub amps. They've got one that's rated at 500w into 4 ohms, which should easily do 300 watts (rated power for a 2245) into 8 ohms:

With this setup, you could, in theory get the whole woofer/amp system for $400-450, in theory. Find a 2240 or 2245 frame, have it reconed as a 2245, and get the amp... you'd be in business!
If you did this, I'd recommend changing the bass boost resistors on the PE amp; the factory setup is about 3 dB of boost at 30 Hz. You won't need that much with a 2245 in a 6.6 cubic foot box... I'd recommend about 1 dB at around 25 Hz. Here's the boost table, with the resistor choice I'd reccommend, boxed in red:
Maybe the best thing to do is download a copy of WinISD and play with different speakers/cabinet sizes/tunings.
In just a short time you will find that the 2235/2231/136A provide the deepest bass extension. In fact, in a cabinet of under 6 cubic feet, tuned the same, they perform better than the 2245 which is easily the best performing (i.e., goes lowest but not necessarly loudest) of the 18"s in the included JBL line.
After playing with the program, I'm scrapping my 130As for 2205s reconed as 2235s.
Not a bad choice for a woofer at all! If you want a true sub that is not required to be used above 100Hz there are better choices though. The 2235 is remarkable in that it is quite acceptable as a sub and according to some is usable to 1KHz.Originally Posted by toddalin

Yeah... do that... to hell with these asshats like Lancer who have over 30 years of intimate experience with everything JBL...
BTW - one primary reason the 124/2203 and 136/2231/2235 have fallen out of favor is due to their mass rings smacking on the pole pieces. As mentioned by a JBL engineer recently "It's pretty irritating."
Gordon posted a great solution using the venerable 2245H. G.T. definitely hit a home run with the design of that transducer, leaving out the mass ring from the 124/2203/136/2231/2235 and going with the aquaplas instead. I'm not maligning the 124/2203/136/2231/2235 legacy, they served long and well indeed, I'm just saying there have been improvements made.

the newer one ARE better ( in some ways)but also more money. It depends on how much you want to spend. If it where me and the 2241, 2235 and 2203 were my choices I'll go with the 2235's personally as that's what they were designed for ( subs). It's a great one that can go very low and put out enough for any reasonable home or room. Also, they are common and not too expensive. Best used under 60 for subs.
