Excuse my ignorance.

should be cheap ..
shuld be loud
shouldn't break ...
what ...??
I was thinking more along the lines of sound characteristics.
Excuse my ignorance.
This is the one Carver you don't want. Not sure why but this one has a big reliability problem - many broken ones show up on ebay.
I'd recommend something from either the "PM" pro line (like PM-175, PM-350) or the "TFM" home line (TFM-6, 15, 25, 35, 45, etc).
I've got some of each, all are at least 15 years old and all still see regular duty with no issues.

I bought one new about 15 years ago and it blew the power transistors just after it was out of warranty.
After the repair it has been fine.
There are two theories to arguing with women, but...neither has worked.
If your on a budget and want to get a lot of amp for your money check out older used Yamaha pro amps, $200-$300 will get you a quality amp in the 250x2 watt range.
I've had one powering my 2245 subs for several years now. Never a problem and no need for bass shakers.
Couldn't have said it better myself .Originally Posted by majick47

IMO the sound is just OK. Until something breaks, not an "if" but "when". I am an old Crown fan, VERY reliable but a little [ahem] bright on the highs. The Yamaha will work great with the 166's, anything over 150 WPC is overkill. The coolest old amp for these speakers [once again, IMO] would be a McIntosh 2105 $400 and up on eBay
