Cabaret 4691B info & opinions please

I picked a pair of these up for today. They sport E140-8 15"ers and 2370/2425J horn/cd's

Everything works as it should and aside from some physical nastiness on the cabs I can't complain.

I did a search here and came up with some info but not alot. I'm mainly into home audio though I do play guitar as well. How do I best make use of these if at all.

    Thanks in advance,

    Brad

They're workhorse sound reinforcement speakers for bands, great for vocals. Also WAY loud party speakers. Very versatile, they work well for theater in the park, event PA, dance studios, aerobics, small to mid-size venue DJ, etc.. See the brochure here: http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/Cabaret_Series2.pdf

They typically come with spilled beer patina and a gratuitous barf run or two on the grilles, but clean up nicely. Replacement plastic corners may still be available from JBL Pro.

I've long since swapped out the E140's for 2226H's in mine, and added matching subwoofers for better bass. Never played guitar through them, but they'd likely work for that, too.

Vertical dispersion is too narrow for me in home use, and they need tweeters or a crossover rework for serious listening. If you study the 2370A spec sheet, tho, you'll see they don't have a lot of potential for upgrade.

They are what they are, and damn good at it. JBL's still making equivalents according to the same formula.

    Question for Zilch

I ended up with the 4691B's minus the 2425J/2370A(I have a 2426J/2370A already) and I am looking at putting a pair of 2226J's in the cabs as it looks like a drop in with no modifications needed.

My question is: Did you have to brace these cabinets any for the 2226's? I have done nothing with them yet, but they sound a little hollow.

I want to use the E140's in a Altec 1234 cabinet with 806/511B crossed over at 1 khz. I think the 140's will like the larger cabinet size of the 1234(at least 8 cubic ft or larger).

    All comments welcome!

Nope, it's a direct swap. Using J's, the HF is gonna be too hot unless you biamp. There's no filter on the LF driver.

You'll not get big bass out of these. They need a subwoof for disco duty....

[Sub1500 boxes need more bracing tho....]

    Cool! sub1500 and 2226/2426/2370A combos!

I should try that before getting the sub1500's into sealed cabs under the PT800's.

I've got both 2226/2426/2373 cabs and 2226/2426/2370 cabs. I just hadn't thought of having fun with the sub1500's in a Dj setting yet. Is that a 2373 in your avatar, Zilch?

Anyway, you nailed the application for the 4691B and that is still has good current usage.

Avatar is PT-F1010 waveguide with 2431H driver going into L200 cabinet, as described in the "Quick and Dirty" thread:

    in ref to Zilch's comments...

I will be using a separate crossover since I have had experience with the 2226J and 2426J/2370A combination in the past.

I will be using less than 10 wpc tube power on these, 800hz crossover 2nd order with L-pad on the HF. I have plenty of small subs to use with this setup if the need arises.

The crossover that is in the 4691B has little use to me as I am using for home use instead of commercial duty.

My experience with 2426J/2370A had before with 1.6khz 3rd order crossover(HF compensation used) left me with the feeling that the upper midrange was much nicer than the usual Altec 902/806/802 drivers I have used extensively before. Unfortunately the Altecs have the better top HF response.

So with a tweeter horn the 2426J/2370A setup is very nice. I will however just use this system as a 2-way for the time being as this will just be another one of my secondary systems.

My previous question has to do with the 4691B cabinet and whether or not it has any rattles or other issues. Unlike my 4648 and 3677 cabinets which are braced to the hilt, the 4691B seems less solid/dense. I guess I will find out when I install the drivers and try it out!
